As for whether he's ever been in a real fight, I don't know that anyone except Seagal can say that with certainty. I do know though, that a 7th degree black belt in any recognised martial art is a major achievement.

Saying Aikido doesn't work is like saying Karate does work by judging it from Kata. These are combat techniques, and they only work with correct application. Sure, the Aikido wrist grabs are stylised attacks while training, but they're a way to safely evaluate very dangerous techniques without injuring your training partner. As for Seagal's credentials, Anderson Silva thought he was worth training with.

You have to fight in competitions to be a fighter? I thought a fighter was also someone who could win a fight or survive confrontations on the street. Many of the top Sensei's over the years never fought in competitions some even looked down upon competition fighting. I know in Karate for example points competition could actually screw up your practical street effective techniques. Even the UFC does not in any way resemble a street confrontation and a fighter who beats another in the Octagon may get his ass kicked by the same fighter in the street.

What bothers me about Seagal is that with all his formal training in Japan, and being the first westerner to be able to run a dojo there, he would've learned some respect. Look at the power, speed, conditioning, and reflexes of ANY of the videos of actual fighting competition of those above. I have seen Steve's videos of his Aikido demonstrations and while impressive from a training point of view, in terms of actual fighting abilities, all Steve manages to show Is how good his students can get thrown around by him. I have YET to see any videos of Steven receiving a punch or kick. Nor have I seen any video of Steven actually hitting or kicking someone who's NOT defending and countering besides his movies.

I am not a fan of Segal... but you should read his real bio... He is the first Westerner to open a Dojo in Japan... he did have to fight other school's Masters and he does have a background in the CIA... that said... Back in the late 80's-early 90's Segal was on Leno and Leno asked him what he thought of other martial arts movies. his response was to say they all sucked and that his were the only ones showing the real thing...saying guys like Chuck Norris were posers... This came to the attention of the great Bob Wall who openly said he would fight Segal anywhere, any time... other fighters joined him... Originally 12 in all... Blinky Rodriguez, ex-heavyweight kickboxer, his cousin Benny 'the Jet' Urguidez,the first Westerner to fight a Thai Kickboxer... he thought Muay Thai was the guys name... etc. ... they all put out the challenge to Segal, along with a huge purse to the winner... calling themselves the Dirty Dozen... both sides talked a lot of smack fir a few months... Then Chuck Norris went on Leno and JL asked about this whole affair and what Chuck thought of it and Segal... in classic Norris style, Chuck said he enjoyed the movies Segal had made... when asked what he thought of Segal and what he had said about Norris being a poser, Chuck said everyone was entitled to an opinion but that he himself had never met Segal and so had nothing to say about someone he didn't know... Leno pressed the issue and Chuck said 'Sure, I would fight him if he asked'... by this time the 'Dirty Dozen had grown to almost 40 of some of the greatest fighters of all time... point fighters, light'/no contact fighters, kickboxers, full contact fighters, and so on... Eventually with all the challenges from the DD and Norris, who said he was not interested in joining the DD... Segal stepped up and said he would fight them all... as long as they understood the fight had to be to the death because he NEVER played around with his martial arts... if you have space to roll out of a lock you have space to do other things as well.. like counters or resistance. resistance also includes releaving, escaping or stopping the lock with your other hand for example.

I find it hard to think of a fight with a more certain outcome, yet I'd still pay to see it. Bas was a professional fighter. Segal has no fight record. A pro fights all the time whether it's in training or in front of a paying audience. Segal may demolish the average tough guy. You have to fight in competitions to be a fighter? I thought a fighter was also someone who could win a fight or survive confrontations on the street. Many of the top Sensei's over the years never fought in competitions some even looked down upon competition fighting. I know in Karate for example points competition could actually screw up your practical street effective techniques. Even the UFC does not in any way resemble a street confrontation and a fighter who beats another in the Octagon may get his ass kicked by the same fighter in the street.

He then went home and with the extra testosterone and adrenaline in his blood he beat up his wife vigorously. And he also beat up some Jamaican twins and used the footage in a movie afterwards. So you could say he is 6-0 in real fights. I honestly think that Steven would break a couple of Bas Rutten's fingers and knuckles with his nose and teeth.

Look at the power, speed, conditioning, and reflexes of ANY of the videos of actual fighting competition of those above. I have seen Steve's videos of his Aikido demonstrations and while impressive from a training point of view, in terms of actual fighting abilities, all Steve manages to show Is how good his students can get thrown around by him. I have YET to see any videos of Steven receiving a punch or kick. Nor have I seen any video of Steven actually hitting or kicking someone who's NOT defending and countering besides his movies.

The dude he demonstrated this move on told him he should never demonstrate it again because the dude had to stay home from work because he was in so much pain. And he wasn't just an actor. He's such a rare guy that I think the only people that still watch his stuff, are those that find his delusions of grandeur hilarious.
There's a hilarious interview with Tom Arnold about the filming of Exit wounds with a scene on a boat. Seagal eager to start shooting got up and started to walk towards the door. Tom realised it was a door that just had the ocean behind it and looked to the director, the director happy to bruise Seagal's ego just silently shook his head and let him fall into the water... 😂 that should be in the deleted scenes.
Or the time he thought Gene Lebell wouldn't be able to choke him out, so he did and an unconscious Seagal had a different kind of exit wound in his underwear.
Rutten fought elite MMA fighters; the only fight that Seagal is known to be in is when he beat up his 120lb wife.

Bas was a professional fighter. Segal has no fight record. A pro fights all the time whether it's in training or in front of a paying audience. Segal may demolish the average tough guy. But please Bas not only was a pro, he beat some of the most dangerous men of his era. And to boot won the UFC heavyweight belt. This is a case of a martial arts teacher/ actor vs a guys whose job is to fight and no matter the outcome will be beaten up all the time by lethal and often times elite athletes.
