  • A heartwarming story of a boy and his cat. A cat that's also both a supportive big sister figure and weapons-grade technology. Anime silliness is abound in this retrospective of the comedic sci-fi franchise known as All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku!

    In Japan, some girl called herself "Nuku-Nuku". In 1998, she with Lina Chan (Lina Inverse) worked on a fan translation of Seiken Densetsu 3" with Neill Corlett and SOM2FREAK that was released in July 1999. And this was the only way to play this game in English until Trials of Mana was released on the Nintendo Switch in June 2019.

    Looking at how much of a tonal and production change from the OVA to the TV Anime, it really shows how much a director can effect the feel of a production. I know OVAs have the advantage of a higher budget usually (though not always), but vision and management can really make the difference.

    i recall an incident where a boy was brutally attaked by a dog and the boy's cat attacked the dog and chased the dog away before circling back to check up on the boy.

    In the early 90s I learned of an "anime club" in a nearby college town. "kids" around 18 to 20 (I was 10 years their senior) gathered at a deli to play "freshly imported" unsubbed, undubbed anime upon a rear projection TV. "Nuku Nuku" was one of those titles. A few years later a locally owned and run video rental store (as opposed to a chain like BlockBuster) stated to gradually accumulate anime titles, these translated for English speaking viewers. I rented the OVA and had a far better understanding of the narrative beyond the visual gags and action sequences. Fun stuff! I will confess with a title like that, I had hoped Nuku had somewhat more feline attributes to her chassis, analogous to Mishi Mishi's murid design from the TV series (about which I knew nothing until I watched this video). But I realize such a look wouldn't really work for the story as we are supposed to see her as an older sister and not a "furry waifu".
    And though I realize fanfic often gets a bad rap, much or the time justified, I came across a Nuku piece during my earliest days on the internet (around 1996 or 97) that absolutely wrenched my heart from my chest. Basically, it involved Nuku's organic cat brain beginning to "wither" within the android "shell". No, there was no last minute "miracle" that saved her. Her mind slowly faded like that of an elderly patient suffering dementia or Alzheimer's. It was all the more tragic because her cybernetic body did not reflect what was happening inside her metal alloy skull. She eventually remembers nothing except a tender fondness for her younger 'brother" as she expires. Ironically, her "death" is what finally mends the family, bringing together Ryunosuke's parents to help him through his grief. That story left me a blubbering mess (I'll confess I've always worn my emotions upon my sleeves) because it hit far too close to home. My own grandmother died only a few years earlier after suffering a period of mental degradation. I, along with two other family members served as her caregivers, so I witnessed her "devolution of personality" daily for months on end. While just somebody's personal fanfic, I can not think of the OVA without also recalling that story. Thus, "Nuku Nuku" hits me a bit differently than some fans.

    As soon as I saw that Nuku Nuku wore sneakers way less in the TV series then in the OVA, I knew it was going to suck. And I was right. Call that Decon’s Law.
    Very stupid jokes aside, I’m really glad you highlighted the OVA, cos even through this retrospective alone I was very sincerely charmed by it and actively want to watch it. That’s the same for a lot of what you cover, sure, but this one hit different; this is one of those cases where I absolutely would’ve taken the title at face value and skipped over it not out of derision, but simply cos it may not have grabbed me. And I’d really be missing out by doing so.
    (also y’know nuku nuku do be havin’ some sick kicks and im all about that noise i tell yew hwat 👀)

    I love the OVA. Episodes 3 & 5 are pure gold. The TV show has its moments; the first half is a lot rougher compared to the second half. Am glad I stuck through it, but it is definitely a bit of a lot down.

    I have the OVA on DVD and loved it from the start for the heart and silliness. It kind of reminded me of an anime you haven't covered yet, "Maris the Chojo" or "SuperGal" from 1986. The only OVA that I know of that actually have a gag reel during the end credits.

  • @DJPirtu
    @DJPirtu Před 3 lety +8

    Ah. The first VHS of the OVA is the jewel of my collection.
    Because it's the BRITISH dub with "proudly local" cast, which is just a treat to listen to, at least for an episode.
    Also, if that was part of the opening near the start, I believe it has a complete original opening theme.

    • @DJPirtu
      @DJPirtu Před 3 lety

      Hah! Knew it.
      I don't know why I didn't dig into this before, but the UK dub had an original opening by a band Marina Speaks, called Supergirl (Heart Can Survive)
      Now, if I'd only be able to get my hands on that cassette...

    Cheers for the reminder. I totally remember reading about this in the early 90s now, but I had more or less forgotten about it. Back then, with a limited access to anime and tight limitations of my budget, it wasn't a priority, but the OVA really sounds splendid after all. I took the chance of picking the US DVD and Manga releases up in used condition for a $20 total including shipping to Europe, as I can't remember it beeing released here at all. It will take several weeks until I have it, but I'm sure it's going to be a great addition to my old school collection.

I believe it was aired with subtitles and I can't recall much about the story based on memory alone, but I remembered the premise of the show very well as it stood out as being unique to me at the time. I'll give this show a proper revisiting sometime soon.

    Did Nuku Nuku TV try to combine Pink Elephants with a Big-Lipped Alligator moment? Even within the zaniness of THAT series, it sounds out-of-left-field and when it's over no one ever talks about it again ... or so it would seem.

    The part where the teacher dated the alien furry at the fairground, was the part of the show where I asked myself why this happening in Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.I would have stopped watching the show at that point, if not for the fact I was more than halfway through it. Dash might have had problems, but at least I was interested to see how it ended, it didn't bore me to death like the TV version.

    Bought the DVD of this OVA from a convention in November, and I don't think I'll regret that purchase.
    The TV series (why only 14 episodes? Then again Sailor Moon Crystal season 1 only had 14 episodes)...the animation is weak (while the OVA's is very good for the time, the TV anime looks like it was made in 1992 and at 24:18 they couldn't even make the spirals match!), and it looks like a generic/lame catchphrase comedy anime instead of a Nuku Nuku anime (and since Eichi is annoying, you'd hate Suite Precure as three of its villains sing every other line in that series), as if the writers who saw the OVA wrote what they thought made it work but really doesn't. I'll pass the TV one up, it doesn't look interesting, and I'm not missing anything by skipping out. I can tell why you like the Michi Michi episode though, heck, she shoulda had her own anime!! 😛
