I've never seen this auto-pilot installed THAT close to the stern....You said 18 in from "pivot point" To me that's the bolts that hold the rudder to the boat. IE where the rudder pivots. can't watch anymore, good luck
that is a lot of work using untreated pine.I personally use teak where possible, if not starboard(though pricey but it endures w/o maintenance). I would rather use salvaged marine stainless steel 1/16 if I have access to a bending brake(if not a sturdy vise & leverage). Built it once well, but then I live in Fla & stuff used in salt water needs to be robust.
@@chrisburns5691 I initially fitted mine at 18" from pivot, but found it would not tack as the rudder was not moved across far/fast enough. I have moved it back to 12" so that the rudder can be at 45 degrees on full autotiller deflection. Now much more useful.
@@chrisburns5691 He doesn't mention it, but later in the vid you can see he put the pin further forward of the initial "X". I just installed one of these on my RS22. Can't wait to try it out on my sail to Catalina Island next week!
I have mixed feelings about this video... It's informative, but DEFINITELY not an approach I'd take. There is no way I'm putting a butt-ugly bracket like that on my boat. By the way; you don't need to sand your tiller down. Just soak it in teak oil, and it'll look great, and last longer.
honestly, so full of bad advice and ideas that should be taken down. By the way, that was not you rudder pivot point. It’s the center of your pintles on the leading edge, not the trailing edge.
Thanks for taking the trouble to make and post the video - appreciate it.
Did that wooded brack fall apart in the first year, or the second?
A good instructional video. But the background music is intrusive and insanely annoying.

He caught that but didnt mention it hence the second x on where to drill.
untreated wood on a boat? Will that last more than one season..?

I need to fit mine more than 460mm (18") from the rudder pivot. Would that be OK?
keep in mind that the pivot point would actually be where the pintles and gudgeons (rudder pins) meet, not the back of the rudder as shown here..

@@oakbellUK ah ok, glad it worked out

Great content! Totally understand the need for auto pilot - it's like having another crew member on board! Where are you located?
You can but extensions so you don't need that structure
Yes you can get extensions and you can mount it on the under side of the tiller so it will not be up so high!
Is your boat a starwind
it is a Macgregor.
Wire nuts are for residential homes. Not boats.
There's music playing while you are talking

Please PLEASE do not use wire nuts on a boat. They have no place on any boat. Crimp your wires and make them water tight correctly.

Why does everyone put music on their video? Super annoying!!!
The music is so awful I stopped watching
