- Ep 35 "Finale" & Name Ceremony Make a Micro/Mini/Small Lathe
#modelengineering #howtomake #lathe
Here the last episode in the build series, Naming Ceremony, Brass Name Plates, Swarf Tray, Electrics & Light
Thanks to all who stayed with me on this long haul, took me approx, 1 year to make in tandem with a Steam Loco build and other projects on the side.
This lathe casting were briefly started many many years ago by an unknown Engineer, passed through a few pairs of hands since with nothing else done to it, until i got hold of it, so i will continue with the small amount of work already done, to finish the lathe in to a Imperial Micro / Mini / Watchmakers Lathe with screw cutting capabilities & back geared, everything has got to be made from Scratch including the Back Gears, Clutch, Change wheels, Leadscrew, Tailsock, Spindle, Pulley's, Screwcutting Mechanism, Dials etc etc just to name a few. The casting is very elegant and well made item, with a good foundation to start from.
There were numerous manufactures of these small lathe in Great Britain many moon's ago, to many to name here, so do a search and take a look at the huge seclection of makers and differing shapes, sizes and capabilities.

Gday Kev, truly no need to thank us for sticking with you, we thank you for sticking with it, the is a build to be very proud of, I’m not sure to many would attempt this with no plans and some castings that have been partly machined, it’s been a great series to follow and I’m bloody keen to see what accessories you have in mind, thanks mate
Much appreciated Matty

@@MrFactotum Very true. the lathes lovely buddy well done
Wonderfully done. Your video series is a warning to anyone who is planning to build a machine tool from scratch... it is an enormous amount of work, and you need a pot full of patience to be successful.
hi arh2185
thanks for feedback, much work and thinking but keeps the old brain cells working and interesting to make, i would recomend anyone to have a go, just take bitesize chunks, also you don't necessarily need castings.👍👍👍👍👍👍

Did I miss the making of the change gears ? Good name for a little lathe - I'm envisioning a lathe that requires a MICROSCOPE to be able to use the thing ! ( hmmm . . . 1000 TPI threads , anyone ? ! ! ! ) -
'Can't imagine how steady of a hand is needed to sharpen tooling THAT SMALL ! ( That's why we make jigs , fixtures , & tool holders ! ) THAT would make for some interesting PRECISION , Eh ? Great work !
cheers George
you didn't miss the change wheels i used a spare set of Myford ones
yes thats the trouble now can see the small things due to ageing eyesight, you can't win them all!!!!
