💖 ABOUT ME:
Hi, my name is Jen I am 44 and live in Connecticut with my husband and 8 year old son. I am a stay-at-home Mom and full-time CZcamsr with a degree in business with a focus in marketing. Before leaving work when my son was born, I was a commercial lender at a bank. I also worked at Sephora and Macy's doing visual merchandising.
I have dry skin with some hyperpigmentation and fine lines. I love natural makeup looks but occasionally go outside my comfort zone a little bit. On my channel you'll find lots of videos about drugstore makeup and drugstore dupes (those are my favorites to film!) but I also review high-end makeup as well. I hope you enjoy my channel and if you do, please don't forget to SUBSCRIBE & leave me a comment! - Jak na to + styl
Mikayla is Tik Tok's Jaclyn Hill... these brands can never buy my trustworthy Jen❤
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This!!!❤
I stopped watching Mikayla a long time ago just for this very reason!
And idk how anyone does!?! It’s frustrating that her bad behavior has been rewarded the way it has. The only thing I can think is she has a younger audience or maybe one that doesn’t watch much CZcams. I’d NEVER buy something per her rec. She doesn’t care AT ALL about her subscribers which are actually the ppl that got her where she is to begin with- it’s sad when there’s SO many amazing creators out there.
@@elisa-beary forgive my ignorance, what was her bad behaviour? I’m not on TT or IG.
Makeup companies giving an influencer a Birkin bag is insane
It's crazy. I can't imagine how much money she made the brand to get a Birkin bag.
Seriously. I wonder if that was that particular influencer's idea cause those are not cheap bags. Ytuber influencers have NEVER gotten that level of luxury given to them by a brand. Very distasteful.
Assuming, of course, that it's genuine. There are a lot of counterfeits of luxury products, and a lot of them look very genuine.
@@20thcenturyrelicSure but I don't think a brand would risk gifting a fake Birkin as an original. Her viral video probably made them millions, compared to that, it's pocket money, especially if you consider they might have bought some willingness on her part to create future videos on their products.
@@hailiemath I hear ya. Mokayla said she had no idea, but we all know her credibility at this point. But who knows.
Mikala drives me crazy. I am not sure how she has so many followers. The first time I heard her voice, I thought I couldn't listen to her for more than a couple of seconds. So, I don't. You, Jen, are amazing! I truly trust your opinions on products. Keep doing what you're doing. Two thumbs up!
Me too! I don't think I ever watched a full video of hers because of the voice, and what seems to me is a fake or exaggerated "accent."
TikTok is a hell scape. The quality of content creators there is terrible. Mikayla is just awful.
I can’t stand her voice either but the kicker is her shady way.
@@nraff414it IS fake. They’ve actually caught her using her regular voice
Listening to her say "Teeah Teeah" was pretty funny, though 😅
Influencers have been being bought for a while. You can look at the content and tell who’s being honest about a product and who isn’t. If no product is ever bad that’s a flag!
I totally agree. One day their favorite mascara is brand “ X” and the next day it has changed to brand “Z” because the video is “kindly sponsored by brand “Z.” Please don’t waste your money based on 1 individual review. Read many reviews, the good and the bad. I’m truly disappointed in a few people that I trusted in the past who are now being sponsored often.
Sam of HFTT, years ago, spoke out about influencers and there none disclosures. That changed things.i personally don’t mind if an influencer gets sponsored, etc. as long as I know. Because before THAT, I had trusted the OG’s of beauty tube and would BUY things thinking I was getting a true and honest review. When I learned how foolish I was, I was livid.
Thank you for your video, Jenn ❤
You and Emily Noel-- the best
Yes my two Favorites as well. Honest, and genuine. Slashed Beauty ( Amanda ) seems super honest and sincere too 🥰💖
💯 ❤
Jen and Emily Noel are the only two I watch knowing there are no sponsorships. Once I watch someone who says their video is sponsored…I switch off and go to something else. Jen and Emily Noel are very real and have sincere personalities💞They’re just working from home to be there for their children but are also fellow make~up and beauty lovers like us🌼✨
Yeah, Emily I watch for her soothing, down to earth real reviews! And how she never looks down on budget friendly makeup, she makes it work! Just like many of us! 😊
Any time I do a Sephora survey I ask them to remove incentivized reviews from the star rating. I think they should be posted so people can read them if they want, but they absolutely should not count towards the star rating. ULTA isn’t as bad in my opinion, but no brands should allow incentivized reviews count towards the star rating. Always read your reviews with the incentivized posts filtered out. Verified purchases only!
I do, too! It makes a huge difference.
Ulta needs to stop that nonsense too. I've seen several products that I know are bad have five star reviews. For instance, the new Maybelline sun-kissed liquid brushes. They are terrible. Yet have a bunch of five-star reviews on ulta.
I no longer watch any content that is sponsored. I’ve stopped watching influences I’ve followed for years because everything seems sponsored.
I appreciate you sharing this information. This was very enlightening.
Thank you, Jen, for always giving honest reviews. I know we all have different tastes, skin types, etc, but it’s refreshing to see an influencer be honest!
Yes! It’s like they went from an influencer to a salesperson and their videos are all commercials!
It’s hard because some many aren’t disclosing.
@@monicapatton1405 I guess what we have to do is assume they're biased, and possibly very biased.
@@20thcenturyrelic agreed
In my opinion Maykala would sell her own grandmother for money.
😂
Or, lie about her grandmother 😳
But only if Grandma gives her an Amazon gift card!😜
So true! I found her rather annoying and just don’t watch her! There’s so much greed going on on some channels!
It doesn’t take very long to figure out what’s going on when you start watching these videos. I find your lack of greed and honesty so much easier to watch! When one influencer started saying how she called this company or that and asked to be sent these things, and they’re all very high end products I was turned off her channel for good! I find the level of greed really turns me off them!
You have spoiled me with your unsponsored videos. There are so many channels I no longer watch because the behavior was over-the-top, self-serving, narcissistic, or downright suspicious. Your much appreciated comments here confirm my suspicions!
So interesting. And now I know why there are sooooo many Amazon haul videos. It’s gotten to be a bit much. Some of my favorite CZcamsrs (not you, Jen) have begun to sound like a dang Amazon commercial on repeat. I get that they’re just trying to make a buck, but it gets old. I appreciate your honesty and that you don’t push Amazon down our throats. 💜
Yes! And Dollar Tree
I guess I am naive, I thought people just liked Amazon because it is so convenient!! I will def be watching things with a different eye. Thanks Jen for being vulnerable ❤
And the ‘must have’ and ‘can’t live without’ videos. Overconsumption at its nauseating worst…
That and Sephora!!
Ty. Jen. There are several beauty influencers that were so true and honest but now just go on and on about products to buy on Amazon. They were so honest and now are on an agnosia roll about " buy buy buy"😮😲🙄💄💄. Two ladies I watch have such talent but now don't trust with all their products push,so sad.
And make CERTAIN to comment and like Jens page, this is how she earns a non bias living!!!
and don't skp ads ☺
I totally agree + wanted to say that. I’d nvr skip ads for her but on my iPad I nvr ever get ads. I think I’ll watch her on my iPhone so as to get all of her ads. Since we’re taking ab not skipping… let’s not skip referrals of fam + friends. She deserves the world❣️
I did that and also gave her a follow.
@@connie6410 Well, I got sick of ads and am paying for Premium. Idk how that counts in her stats.
That's why I like watching you and Emily Noel!!! I used to watch channels like jessica Braun or Talory Winn but almost every video they put out they are selling something through sponsorships. I understand this is how they make $$ but I feel like they are sell outs.
I watch the same channels and sometimes I feel like they are doing a video just for the sponsorship money and they don't want to be there lol like they're fed up but needs the money. Sometimes they just throw none sense in the vlog just to fill up the vids. Just my opinion
@@andre-annelamontagne1405yep, that’s why I unsubscribed
Same with influencers who are sponsored by certain brands or devices, ie Jane Iredale, NIRA, etc. I just don’t even watch anymore.
Watched them too. And same reason why I stopped. They claim to be honest etc but not really
Of course they are! Makeup is a business. An industry used by the entire world. I stopped following ‘Hot n Flashy’ when every other video was pr, codes, links, promotions. Turned into a car saleswoman. Of course a product is great when you get it for free and sell it for profit. No thanks!!! I trust you wayyyy more!
I've also stopped following Hot and Flashy
Amen. Angie lost me. I used to follow her religiously and now it’s only occasional. She was solid when she started out but no more
Thank you! I’ve unfollowed Angie too for all the reasons you listed.
Exactly, stopped watching Risa for that same reason
Yeah. Me too I just started to get a strange vibe from her that just didn’t seem right.
You're one of the last few beauty content creators I watch. As a professional in the industry, I don't always agree with your information, but I view you as an honest, intelligent and honorable person.
There are many I no longer watch, because over time, most of them were doing copious sponsored videos, and it became obvious to me that it was all about pushing brands, companies, etc.
With that said, I'm a capitalist, and all for making money; providing one does it honestly. I own my own small business for 35 years, and lasted this long because I have integrity. I know very well about what you have addressed in your commentary; first hand.
At the end of the day, you will continue to grow and flourish "because" of your integrity, and being true to your morals. ~Godspeed~
I have so many thoughts about this. First, thank you for pulling back the curtain. As responsible consumers, we need to have transparency when we make decisions. Along those lines, I think beauty CZcamsrs get the most flack because their channels are touted as doing “reviews,” but reviewers are now mostly just salespeople making ads (it’s why we love and trust you). People also forget that CZcams pays for views, but for a lot of influencers now, that’s not enough for them to make it worthwhile. Finally, I pay for CZcams Premium so that I don’t have to watch ads. But now, I have to skip over all the sponsored portions of videos. Anyway, sorry for the long post-keep doing what you do, Jen! ❤
It's kind of baffling to me that CZcamsrs don't feel like the ads are enough money. CZcams ads are by far the biggest part of my income. The affiliate links are paying me maybe a third of that, so I always focus on getting more views on my videos because that equates to more ad revenue. That way I don't have to worry about sponsors or if people are clicking my links. Everyone who watches the video has to watch at least part of an ad, so it makes sense to me to focus on that. And if I'm getting a lot of views, it means people are enjoying my channel so it's a win-win! 🥰
@@JenPhelpslots of creators seem very obviously greedy and needy. You otoh seem to strive for contentment, harmony and fairness above all else, which makes you trustworthy and your reviews so appealing. Thank you for this video. As someone else said, you have drawn back the curtain on the industry. Rather like Toto exposing the Wizard of Oz, it's good to know what the charlatans are up to, even if they remain adored by the masses!
Oh views is not enough! They pull in hundred of dollars of goods a month! Not just makeup, but clothing, furniture, expensive jewelry, household goods. It’s amazing the amount of money that is spent on buying influencers.
Thanks for telling us about these practices. Certainly the contests are straight up sale tactics. It almost makes me view the company as the bad seed. Yes, they need to make money. But some of them sound a little shifty.
My issue with these lavish trips and stuff is I wonder how much less I could pay for products if they weren't shelling out money for these things. I don't know that TirTir is buying Birkin bags for many influencers. I'm talking more like brand trips and huge PR packages that they spend literally millions on, probably a few times a year. It may not be a lot of savings for one singular product, but I'm certain as an aggregate savings across multiple purchases that could add up.
I don't know if you can get a complete idea on money spent by every brand but Kelly Strack does huge PR unboxings and she gets PR from so many companies. I like to watch those, when I catch them, just to see if there's anything really cool that's come out. Just an fyi!
You wouldn’t pay any less. This is the advertising budget, if it weren’t spent on advertising through influencers it would be spent advertising another way.
Exactly! And that goes for PR as well. How much less expensive would products be if they weren't being given away for free.
@@omegasobsessions or they could maybe reduce the advertising budget without all the crazy expenses
Yes. This is why Kbeauty (and Middle Eastern perfume, if you're on that side of social media) have become so popular. Good quality and affordable since little is spent on advertising.
I’m not on TT, but from the little I’ve seen of Mikayla, she is the essentially the opposite of what I look for in an influencer. Everything seems very dramatic, her makeup look isn’t my style, her voice is not tolerable for me, and it definitely seems like she flashes her lifestyle and belongings way too much. To each their own, but again, not appealing to me in the least.
I don’t mind sponsored posts *sometimes, because I understand people need to make money, but I’ve found myself skipping over those parts (or the entire video) with people that I watch, because their opinion of the product(s) isn’t going to sway me to purchase it, because I know they’re being paid to do so. 🤷♀️
This BTS look and your transparency are appreciated, Jen.💓🙏
I’ve never watched Mikayla and no hate but from what I’ve seen of her, she’s not my cup of tea.
I also don’t watch or follow Tik Tok.
Great insight and info, Jen. I appreciate that you give honest reviews 😊
I think she is very strange, never followed her but what I see it's just a firm no...
I don’t have tik tok, I barely follow beauty CZcamsrs besides you and a few others, and I can’t even remember the last makeup product I bought because I spent years buying way too much. I’m grateful to be past it now especially as I get older and learn more about overconsumption.
I also don't use TikTok because I"m becoming a Luddite in my old age. Also, I'm on a very low buy except for replacing mascara every 4 months. I tell myself I need to use up products I buy before I get more, again with the exception of mascara and things like my basic everyday blush.
Yes! I keep wondering when do we reach critical mass of product purchases? When we run out of products we want? Or have no more room in our bathrooms and closets? Or when we max out the last credit card? I think Jen has hit a nerve.
Brands also know that it's easier to recommend a product you've tried vs one you haven't, so that's another reason they give products away. Unless you're Mikayla, she'd recommend a product that would make your skin fall off if she could make a buck from it. I don't understand how anyone could be influenced by her, and while I have zero interest in Birkins I do know the significance and it's so hard to reconcile excess like that when the cost of living is so out of control right now.
Thank you for keeping your corner sponsor/amazon/temu free, a place for those of us who just like to talk about makeup. One benefit of having a micro-collection is that I can spend the time to look into the brands I'm supporting. I still care about inclusivity. I still care about not spreading fear and pseudoscience. I still care about not supporting problematic people and brand owners.
Thanks for your honesty! Im not on tiktok, im put off by the overconsumption that ppl like Mikayla promote
I knew I liked you for a reason. You are genuine and honest reviews. Also budget awareness. Thank you for your reviews.
OMG I remember back when too faced launched their Just Peachy powder and foundation and EVERY INFLUENCER who reviewed it "accidentally" got some in their mouth and said "Oh it tastes sweet!". After hearing three different influencers say exactly the same thing I was disappointed that it was totally scripted.
I'm sure it was! Some brands do give us direction and talking points on what to say. If you're sponsored, you have to follow the script...if it's PR you don't have to, but they encourage it.
@@JenPhelps Why the heck was THAT a talking point? I don't eat my powder and foundation!!! Times aren't that tough for me so far!
There's a YT'er who's content I generally really enjoy, but she occasionally does sponsored videos and I won't bother watching (it gets tiresome hearing how every product is even better than the last). One other thing I've noticed about her recommendations, they never ever work for me! LOL... it's gotten almost laughable, now, that I watch them to find out what NOT to buy. ;) Thanks for the insider information, Jen, and just keeping your audience aware of the behind-the scenes business trends--very interesting and helpful!
Well said! For me, when an “influencer” begins to brag about all of the gifted items and only review PR, (and everything is fabulous) I unsubscribe. Nothing, purchased or PR is always fabulous and great. I don’t care if you purchase or receive products in PR. What I expect is honesty. This was a very interesting video. Thank you. You are a breath of fresh air.❤
I really appreciate this behind-the-scenes look at the world of beauty influencers on social media. Thank you, and thank you for not doing sponsorships. I truly value being able to watch a mature makeup lover like me on CZcams and know that her input, opinions, and advice come from her experience and preferences and not a cheque.
I don’t know what’s going on in here BUT, you are getting prettier with every video 😍 thank you ❤
At the end of the day ,everything in life revolves around money. I just like makeup 😂
Lmfao, put it on my tombstone
Same!! 😂😂
Hi Jen, I don't use TikTok and I only follow a select group of content creators on CZcams (you are in that group). I'll watch a creator for a pretty good length of time to judge whether I trust their reviews. When a new product is launched, I never buy it right away until I see that CCs are still giving good reviews over a period of time. If I just hear a good review right in the beginning and then nobody talks about it again, then I probably won't buy it. I don't have a lot of disposable income, so I really want to make sure it is a good match for me.
Thanks!
I do the same 😊 i watch more then few months before subscribing and right now i might reconsider my list because i have some creators that don't bring me joy anymore to be honest 😑 !
Honestly, it isn't complicated. Just be HONEST about what you think of a product. How many can do that? I do feel that you are honest, Jen. I go with my gut and impression regarding products. Love you, Jen. ❤❤ You're a sweetheart.
Thanks for your candor, as always. I’ve stopped watching certain influencers because I started feeling like I was in an infomercial. Even if their Amazon products were tempting- I wouldn’t buy them. We come here to be entertained and taught- not sold to.
I’m just sick of greed and the reason I only have a few channels I watch. Jen I want to let you know how much I appreciate you your channel and literally thousands of dollars you’ve saved me
I appreciate that you're a creator that still reviews and discusses MOSTLY drugstore and affordable brands. I actively avoid watching content that is exclusively luxury or overwhelmingly luxury. Drugstore, itself, has gotten more costly - I don't even want to think about the inflation of luxury.
I have chosen to unfollow creators that have migrated to discussing mostly luxury because it feels so out of touch with my financial values and interests. I love the occasional luxury product but it is hard to feel excited about so many of these products when creators are drowning in luxury PR - I simply don't relate to that at all.
For those creators that continue to keep it humble and stay relatable to the viewer that doesn't get PR, that is where my loyalty, my subscription, my views, my likes, and my comments go.
Luxury has gotten very popular all of a sudden which is strange to me, given the economy and budgets being tight right now. But I can only imagine that people are indulging in retail therapy to feel better about their situations...while getting into debt at the same time! 😥
@@JenPhelps I think luxury is getting more popular because of so many influencers all but saying outright that you're second-class if you prefer drugstore, feeding people FOMO and fooling themselves that they're the 'elites' now instead of just paid hucksters. Then they'll do the occasional drugstore video and it's so obvious it's just to get more views and more suckers. Many insecure people will spend money they don't have to be in the 'in crowd' because of this and it's so sad. I also agree with you that we as consumers need to pay better attention.
I have no interest in products I'll never be able to buy unless I win the lottery. It's a waste of time watching.
@@JenPhelps my New Year's resolution this year is to spend my money in a more intentional way. If I am interested in buying non-essential items like makeup and even non-essential skincare - I only buy it when it is part of a sale, discounted in some way or comes with gifts/free items, increasing the bang for my buck. So far, I've held to this pretty well. It allows me to still treat myself but to keep myself from over buying and reminds me that saving money is a priority.
Honesty, Integrity and True Beauty inside and out ❤ That is why you are my most favourite influencer! Thank you for being real Jen!!
I never watch tiktok.
You are so sweet and classy how you described the offer to "pay for a product at a discount and then review it for them." So you're basically being asked to pay to review their product. That's wild.
I love this behind the scenes, so much I didn’t know…I just thought everyone loved Amazon🤣🤣🤣
Yessss to watching different influencers for different things! I have the same taste in eyeshadow as Lauren Mae but we have different skin types, so I don't search for her for foundation reviews. I use you and Theresa for foundation recs since we have similar skin types.
Also i know things like showing designer gifts from brands are probably meant to be seen as humble, but its more like humble bragging imo
And this is why I primarily only watch YOU these days, Jen! 👏👏❤️💯 I noticed this nonsense happening a lot lately with the TirTir, that D'Alba spray, etc....turns me right off the person's channel.
I think you deserve a bonus for selling products, especially during the holidays.
Amazon had a lot of guts only giving you a $100 gift card after making them $2,000! That’s not even 10%! CZcams needs more honest, trustworthy creators like you! Love you channel ❤️💄💄
Thanks for being transparent and candid. Fashion videos may be worse than makeup. It’s so obvious when every video for a week straight is a sponsorship for Lily Silk, Monica Vinader, Goelia. Shea Whitney lost me when she did an Amazon favorites video that includes Poo-pouri and she sprayed it in the air. She got called out and laughed it off. Not exactly a scandal but it confirmed that she’ll hawk anything for a buck.
Agree on Shea. She did one of those teary confession vids saying she doesnt even like or want expensive designer purses anymore. Next video was on designer purses. lol
Shea Whitney is intolerable to me- she is super fake with her animated movements, trying way too hard to be funny ( she’s not), her condescending attitude- telling us we look cheap and out of style, then bragging on all of the designer pieces she was given, tours of vehicles and planes- disgusting! Jen, please stay true to yourself- we do appreciate you keeping it real!
Great video, very insightful. I've stopped watching several CZcamsrs that do multiple sponsorships. I used to watch LisaJ, but almost every video is a sponsored video of " some of her Favorites". Between that and constantly doing the sales pitch for her brushes, it was to much. They start to be unbelievable. Thanks for being you.
I’m subscribed to her channel but that’s right, specially Jane Iredale. She loves everything from the brand… As to her brushes I totally understand, she is selling her own brand… But other partnerships are always suspicious….
Yes and I’m So sick of every influencer talking about BK brushes😖. I’m sure they’re very good, but so are MANY other brand’s brushes. It just seems disingenuous to me
I remember working with an independent massage therapist and she would do PR baskets to all the local chiropractors. I also managed a real estate office and networking was the name of the game. The lenders would wine and dine the agents to get referrals. It is business and it goes on everywhere.
So true!
Truth. Networking is marketing. It works. The sad part is people will refer business to those who wine and dine, yet seldom evaluate the quality of the service their clients should receive.
Happens in “health” care too. Most concerning example imo.
Jen, in a way I can’t imagine you working at Sephora because when I think of the people who work there, I think of mean girls who talk behind everyone’s back. 😂🤷🏻♀️
Haha there were definitely some mean girls there! But I was the manager in the stockroom so I didn't interact with anyone that much. I managed the cleaning crew in the morning before the store opened and would often manage a stock crew at night after closing. It was a totally different vibe than the salespeople during the day. :)
I once thought of women who sold cosmetics rude however I was proved wrong. Once I was hired as a counter manager for Clarins at a Nordstrom I discovered most were truly nice people.
It depends on the store. Some of the nicest people I’ve met were working at Sephora, but there was always at least one that my reaction was like why are you even allowed to work here with that attitude. Omg
I hate going to Sephora. Most of the young people don't seem to want to help.
The worst part of shopping at Sephora is when you know exactly what you want, but you just need someone to point you towards the right display gondola. Especially when you only want ONE item.
I so appreciate how honest and real you always seem and how transparent you were in this video! 💕
Yes, it's our choice to make best informed decision. However, it's disgusting in all business environments that manufacturers try to buy the business. This has happened WAY before the Internet.
Yes! It's been going on forever!
It goes on in the Doctor's World too‼️
@@JenPhelps Quite true. You made an excellent point about how brands used to court beauty editors at magazines. Now that magazines are mostly websites, I'd guess they still do, but not like they used to. The advertisers go where the eyeballs are.
I can appreciate that PR and other gratis can be a good thing if it helps creators make content but the thing to remember is "If you're not paying for a product, the you ARE the product"...and "you can't buy class". I wish there were more like you still around.
Wow! Great video! Now can you do one that tells us about wholesale vs. retail costs and margins, how makeup ends up at discounters like (my favorites) TJMaxx, Marshalls, Ross, and other outlets? And how much do premium brands pay for preferred shelf space at stores like Sephora and Ulta, etc.? I think this business of makeup is totally fascinating! Thanks for the video!
Love this video idea!
This is such a great idea, I agree! 🥰
Thank you for lifting the curtain. “Influencing” happens in all business models.
At the end of the day… I enjoy watching makeup 💄 videos. They unwind me after a long workday. I appreciate your input and your opinion.
I too thank you Jen, for lifting the curtain of better vision in the beauty industry.
I too enjoy watching videos and unwinding which, for me is unwinding to the rare refreshment of honestly. I too appreciate ur input, but also ur output, opinion, hard working behind the scene reviews, and above all… ur honestly while working it all. Thank u Jen… again + again ❣️
I am so grateful for your channel Jen! There are so few channels I watch now days because I am looking for genuine kindness and honesty. I too miss the simple days we could just bond over makeup.
This is why I don't watch more than a handful of beauty CZcamsrs anymore. I appreciate it so much that your channel is unsponsored. I rarely go on other social media platforms these days because I'm tired of being sold to constantly. I'm tired of the marketing because it's everywhere. I regret an expensive product I purchased from one of my favorite CZcamsrs that was sponsored and realized how much it was happening on that channel. You are my favorite youtube beauty channel and have helped save me so much money but also because of your honesty and integrity. ❤
Jen I ❤your channel. You are always honest when reviewing products. I saw Mikayla’s videos from her paid trip to Korea. To be honest she has lost all integrity! Her gift to herself was a pair of shoes from Hermes, like WTH girl you can buy a pair in the USA….instead of buying something from Korea that she can look back on and have a memory to remember she buys something that she can purchase in the USA. Anyway sending lots of love ❤ from Australia 🇦🇺
Loving the nails!!! With the Tir-Tir foundation....did it get any better using a brush at all? I'm already leaning toward not getting it. I'm almost 58, so my skin is dry and older than yours, and I have more fine lines than you do. This is a good example, I can ask you questions, knowing you will be completely honest, and not (or try not) to let bias get in the way. I don't care how many followers someone has. I care about their integrity. You are one of the comparatively few that I believe has some.💜
Aw thank you! I appreciate that! 🥰 Unfortunately the TirTir foundation didn't get any better, even though I used less of it. I think it's just a dry formula (it says it's for oily skin on Amazon) so I ordered the one in the silver compact because it said it's for dry skin. Hopefully that one looks better!
I'm so glad you've chosen to shed light on this. I don't think most people realize how incentivised social media is. The beauty industry is a business, and my guess is the profit margins on beauty products are much higher than many other inductries. $120 for half an ounce of eye cream? The jar probably costs them more than the product. Because the margins are so high, the actual cost of sending product to influencers has got to be much cheaper that traditional advertizing methods such as TV or magazines. People need to take a step back and look at how quickly new and "viral" products come and go. No one would watch an influencer who has a favorite foundation. blush, etc. and uses it week after week. There's nothing wrong with this business model per se, we all just need to be smart consumers and understand what we are watching.
I don’t watch Tik tok but I know enough about Mikayla to know I don’t like her. Love your channel so much and trust what you say over everybody else :)
Wow, tea spill! Thanks for sharing all this info. It’s important for consumers and viewers to know this stuff.
I always considered you to have high integrity. Even more now!
I think that’s true. I bought the Natasha Denona concealer. It was not good. I’ve been influenced to buy so many things that turned out to be horrible. You’re one of the few I trust to give an honest opinion. Also I love your makeup tonight. I would love to know your thoughts on the blush, eyeshadow, and foundation.
So interesting. Brands giving influencers sales targets really surprised me. It’s reminiscent of direct marketing companies. It’s like the sales managers figure creators work for THEM. Is that a new trend?
I'm not sure! It's definitely interesting...we don't have to meet the sales goals to stay in the program so at least that's good. But we don't get the bonus.
Yaaaa, that’s an unfortunate thing with Natasha. That palette has been on sale @ Sephora, been on Ipsy pop up sales for around half price so, to go to someone who brings ROI from her channel & try to get her (you) to talk abort it again for a discounted palette doesn’t sit well with me. I love your content!! 💜
TBH I was a little taken aback by it, mostly because I already have the palette and have featured it on my channel before.
This is exactly why I follow you & respect you so much. I appreciate all you talk about!! Thanks for your honesty. 🙏🏾
Additionally: there is a difference between someone who genuinely loves the product but doesn’t work for everyone and someone who loves the Cartier earrings or Hermes bags.
Now everything makes complete sense. This was jam packed with very interesting information, some I knew, a lot I didn’t know…I appreciate your hard work and honesty. Like any business there’s a good side, and a fake side! Bravo 👏🏻
Everything in this world feels like it's incentivized or sponsored nowadays. I follow you and watch you because you are genuine, honest, fun, and inviting. Thank you for creating this space and welcoming us in!
What a vicious cycle of deceit. Thank goodness for your videos and insight, Jen.
I don’t like when influencers do big PR hauls to me it’s just bragging and we don’t get honest reviews and a lot get free products and don’t even talk about the product but the smaller channels would love to get it and do reviews
100% agree. Seems like lack of awareness
Small channels doesnt mean honest channels. Some brands are very smart and send PR only to smaller channels because if youre small youre even MORE grateful to get it and most people are not honest/trustworthy either then. While sometimes a larger chanell can be honest because they can afford being so since theyre not dependent only on PR. It has to do with certain person and not if the channel smaller or bigger.
If it’s a sponsored video….not interested. Incentivized…..not interested! I wished it would all stop. I no longer do any social besides CZcams. Everyone is selling crap that they don’t wear. They use your money to buy the quality things. It is OUT OF CONTROL!!!!
Jen, thanks for always being honest. You are the only person I've seen on CZcams talk about this. I don't follow a lot of influencers on CZcams or any other platform. For beauty alone there's several influencers I follow here on CZcams. When I began watching CZcams. I didn't watch anything pertaining to beauty or makeup. I was watching British shows and movies. Then, I stumbled upon HGTV and got interested in converting school busses into homes. Then, that led me to tiny house living. I started following a few people who lived alternatively. Then they split ways and I got bored and found kelly strack. Fell head over heels with her and her channel. She made me fall in love with makeup. Then, juiceyjas was the next, then you came along, next was Emily noel, and Zabrena. Now I watch Steph Tom's. I love British accents. I also watch Stephanie Marie and Risadoesmakeup. I enjoy everybody's videos, but what makes me love it more is the connection I have with most of these influencers. I myself thought yall just got in front of the camera and reviewed products you bought, already have, or PR. I had suspicions that yall were getting emails or mail from different companies because yall were advertising or reviewing the same makeup. But I thought tiktok made you do that. Or IG. I'm not mad about it. Business is Business. This your job. Yall signed up for it and had very little knowledge of what to expect when you got started. Based on this video, it appears all you influencers work your tails off to do this kind of work. It's not just about plastering makeup on your faces. You're a salesperson marketing products. I think if you enjoy this type of work, it's worth the incentives. Because you did so, I got to meet a wonderful person named Jen Phelps who I adore. You always answer my comments unlike others I follow. Some never say anything to me when I ask questions or leave comments. But I appreciate you. ❤
Aww thank you so much for the sweet comment! I also watch all of the ladies you mentioned! 🥰
I highly value transparency and really happy I found your channel. I will say what's pretty irritating to me is the influencers who push or bash a product without doing their homework. For example, Bethany Frankel. There's no way on this earth I would follow any of her beauty recommendations. Just because someone has a large following doesn't make them an expert in anything.
I think in some cases these days "influencers" online have had a big impact, On the other hand, I think these days consumers are more "savvy" and have more alternatives .
I will admit that as hard as I try, I do get influenced without even thinking about it. I consider myself pretty savvy, and I'm nearing 40, so I'd like to think I have some wisdom, but consumerism is insidious. But that's why I watch beauty "influencers" (or perhaps in this case, beauty "advisors" or "guides") like Jen, whom I know are not taking sponsorships and are not selling out. It's easier to not be influenced when you aren't being actively manipulated, y'know. Anyway, I'm not disagreeing with you, just noting that how sneaky the beauty industry on social media is and why I love Jen.
They go for the kids now.
@@oracularpoh they are sneaky and very clever.
@@TracyD2 Very true.
What a refreshingly candid chat about social media marketing...you are right. It is business. And one of the reasons I buy things you talk about is that I don't see you mimicking whatever everyone else is busy selling. You buy and use products I like or you give me enough information to know it is not for me. (I have combo skin -- not dry -- but you always point out when something will only work for one or the other). Thanks for your honest take.
I think for many influencers, it's just business, and I get it. I worked retail for 10 years, and a few of those were for an Estee Lauder counter, and gratis was my favorite part. I am old school, though, and I need the relatability of who I am listening to. There are some content creators that I just can't relate to...some are just too young, some just only use high-end products which is not always in my budget, and then some are literally sharing sponsored content every, single, video. No thanks...
Great video and good information 😊
I love behind the scenes information, mostly because it satisfies my curiosity for how things work. It also helps me make informed decisions. I sure enjoy your channel and appreciate your candidness, Jen! 💕
You are always true to yourself and your viewers.
Ick! Shady business tactics are so off-putting for a brand; it just doesn't feel honest. It seems some beauty brands are almost as corrupt as MLMs. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. Last year, I unsubscribed from other influencers because they would mention and/or use the same products in every video for 2 months straight! I appreciate you, Jen! You're the best! 💎
I have been boycotting Amazon for about 10 years now. I always skip any video that says "Amazon favorites" or anything like that because I know I won't use any of the links and I don't even want to engage with the video out of principle. I have noticed they've been getting much more frequent lately, and it was starting to smell like desperation. Jen just confirmed my suspicions on what exactly was happening. I'm not surprised jen decided to get off the crazy train. Her integrity is the reason I keep watching when I have dumped so many other channels ❤
I don't have tik ⏰️ but my sis in law does and she showed me Mikayla. I died laughing because I couldn't get over the disconnect between her appearance vs her voice. I do an impression of her and make my sis in law crack up every time. She's quite a character. I only watch a few people like Jen so I can see products in action and still do my own investigation to decide if I want to purchase something.
I certainly appreciate this video and will always support Jen’s channel ❤
So interesting. I’ve seen many videos on the beauty industry lately. It’s especially interesting to me because I work in Healthcare & vendors (including pharmaceuticals) are no longer permitted to give gifts, trips, samples anymore. I’m glad you’re transparent in your videos
Thank you, Jen! HONESTY & INTEGRITY!💜🎉💐🙏🏻 I got rid of TikTok... i much more enjoy CZcams! ❤️😘💄💋
I really appreciate your mindset, Jen. I know that when I watch your videos, I’m getting your honest opinion - whether you got the product as PR or purchased it yourself. You’re super relatable and that’s why your viewers love you.
*Jen...❤... Thanks 👍🏽 For Always 🎯 Keeping It Real 👏🏽 Love That.. About You!* 💎
I'd love to see you get pr from natasha danona you deserve it you work hard to bring us informed none biased and genuine reviews xx
Nails looking really cute with your top or dress!
Wow! I really appreciated the honesty. Mikayla is nothing more than a salesperson to me. There are videos where she does a review and says the product is horrible then a few months later after she gets money from them then it is suddenly amazing!
That hurts all of you imo. It makes me not trust anyone. I will say this - your honesty is refreshing and I am now a new follower.
Of course they are being bought. Money, sadly, drives many.
I really appreciate your honesty. You're the best.
Hi Jen; thanks for your honesty. You are the best!
I appreciate a behind the scenes perspective. I enjoy your videos.
I have definitely noticed someone review a product and say that it is amazing and they love it so much. They recommend you purchase it and then they never use it again. That opened my eyes.
Social media and influencers have dominated our lives in some sort or another, however WE the consumers have the responsibility to our due dillegence to make informed decisions on how and when to spend our hard earned money.
Yes, everyone knows this is going on to some degree…but a Birkin’s bag?! Thanks for being transparent. Love your videos!
I want to know what Kiko Milano is giving these influencers because I swear no one talked about them and suddenly, in the last few months, everyone and their mom is making videos using their products.
I will tell you...they just started sending me PR a few months ago and I never got anything from them before now. So they must be doing a big influencer push right now. :)
@@JenPhelpsSome of the products look really beautiful but it was bizarre to see an influx of dedicated videos or videos featuring their products from everyone.
I enjoy Kiko Milano products. Especially Water Eyeshadow and bronzers
I’ve been using Kiko for a long time now. They are the Italian version of Elf or NYX. But I love that version.
@@kuklakid Kiko is definitely above Elf and NYX. Ive been using Kiko Milano for about 12 years now and know them very well. Quality-wise, limited editions, lux packages ... definitely not the Nyx version with cheap packages.
16:00 wow, so interesting. I had no idea!
really, really love that you’ve been getting into commentary ❤ you have a wonderful, intelligent, informed and balanced perspective. you will always have my view 🥰
Awesome video, Jen! The one thing that bothers me the most is when someone isn't disclosing that they are sponsored and they clearly are (ie: the whole video's purpose is to promote a specific product). The company I previously worked for dealt with a legal suit, because certain affiliates weren't disclosing things clearly enough in stating that they were affiliates, according to the FTC guidelines. Some companies have enemies who want to take them down and will resort to things like that and it can turn into a really stressful legal battle. That's one side that many influencers aren't aware of, and hopefully they never have to deal with! I really appreciate how honest and open you are in your videos when companies send you items. Thanks for another great video!
Jen thank you for your transparency! I remember a year or so maybe you made a comment in a video that you had, but no longer did sponsored videos. I work in an industry where certain companies bring us things to drum up business. That’s nothing new. I always love your videos and appreciate the details you give. Thank you!,,
I truly appreciate the integrity you represent on your channel. It keeps me returning regularly! Thank you!💐
Jen honestly you are a smart cookie. Love your content in the last 6 months or so. A subscriber for years but really really enjoying lately. Different videos Smart views. Love it! Hey from Jersey ❤
Thank you for the transparency Jen, that’s why I follow you!
