Created by Oscar nominee Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, Homeland), based on the novel by Thomas Mallon, FELLOW TRAVELERS is an epic love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in McCarthy-era Washington. Matt Bomer plays handsome, charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the-scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements - until he meets Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith. They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history.
Over the course of four decades, we follow our five main characters -- Hawk, Tim, Marcus (Jelani Alladin), Lucy (Allison Williams), and Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts) - as they cross paths through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, while facing obstacles in the world and in themselves.

It's the loneliness of these characters that is heartbreaking. A life of hiding love that you feel so deeply. This is something I know a lot about.
This show just breaks my dang heart.They get little moments of love together,but can’t BE together.I doubt the lying EVER gets easier💔🥺😥

Tim just wants to love and be loved
So does Hawk, he's just already been so burned by the world that he doesn't believe it's an option anymore 😔That's why it pains me when I see all sorts of comments talking about how horrible Hawk is and how he only cares about himself, because it's like... it has nothing to do with that! He doesn't keep up the lies and close himself off from happiness because he *wants* to, but because, as he says right here in this scene, "you realize you don't have a choice."

i feel like tim laughlin showed me how to love without protecting my heart and its okay to hurt because of it. he taught me so much about love. i know it sounds ridiculous but its ture. he was so rare.

Exactly! So many people have this surface level reading of him as though he just screwed over Tim out of some perverse enjoyment of doing so or whatever, and I'm like... y'all, did you miss the part when he outright acknowledged that the didn't see there BEING any option but to lie??
I feel like it's such a disservice to both the writing and Matt's performance to not pick up on the fact that of *course* Hawk wanted nothing more desperately than to be able to live a safe and happy life with Tim. But every single thing in the world around him for his entire life had hammered into him that that was never an option. That doesn't make me hate him, it just makes me incredibly sad and angry at the world they lived in.
he is but in his defense it was a lot going on in the 50’s and he had to do what was best for him and his family
This show has been wonderful and heartbreaking to watch , I love how classy and elegant all the acting in and sexual scenes are and it is nice to see an actual gay love story that has more depth to it than it just being about leather /whips and chains (ahem Ryan Murphy), so I cannot wait for this season to play out as I think we all know what's going to happen. So I will have my tissues ready for the finale...
