    In 1990-91 I lived in the barracks next to the short pier! We used to have some great grill parties there. I was also there for a year in 1986 across the street from that same barracks. It's a very pleasant place for those folks that can find things to do to keep themselves busy, and there are plenty of activities like fishing and tennis and now golf! No golf when I was there. I remember the pizza at the Expat Club was very good. I hope they still make it the same way. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

    I was stationed there Nov.77 to Nov.78. Worked at Harbor Ops. Christmas 77, ship offload. Supply's of equipment, building material, food. It rained all day, downtown lost electrical power. Ate a cold Christmas dinner in a dark chow hall lit by emergency lighting. Just got off a 12 hour work shift. Followed by a cold shower. I really enjoyed my tour there. I reenlisted so I could go there. The Navy said no problem.

    Wow! I can't believe this! Well, I can but I was there in 1975, when the only people there was a battalion of CeeBees building the runway,(it was only 2000 ft when we landed in a P3) and us, a P3 detachment. I think there was a British Colonel living in a house on other side of island. I got a medal, because one of our P-3's was the first to intercept a message from a Russian sub. There was only one gravel road going the length of the Island. We stayed in huts identical to the ones in Black sheep squadron, or McHales Navy. Everything was gorgeous, and it was a tropical paradise! The snorkeling was the best in the world! I wonder what it's like now with a harbor and marina. I look at this video, and everything looks old, roads cracked, telephone wires going all over. I think I like it better when I was there! Lol

    This island is dreamy. Caught some wahoo and tuna there a few years back. Expected the restaurant to prepare it sashimi style for us. They fried it! I couldn't believe it. I still haven't gotten over that. But what a beautiful hidden treasure. Lots of sharks! A shark got one of our tunas and another shark got that shark. The girls at the O Club were sweet. Waves breaking on the beach right outside the O Club. Dreamy.

    I was on Diego Garcia for 2 weeks TAD (Temporary Assigned Duty) back in 1983 while awaiting transit to my ship USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). Wow, a lot has changed since 1983. About 99% of what you showed was not there then. In 1983 only about 5 or 6 permanent buildings existed on downtown. The two weeks I was there as an enlisted E-1 was spent chopping down coconut trees in the downtown area for expanding the base. We slept in Quonset huts about where you pointed out the Armory building.
    We worked for about 3-4 hours and had the rest of the day off. We went to the very white sandy beach and swam in the bay. And yes, I did see Mr. Fin poking up out of the water every once in a while. There is a lot of sharks. In fact I caught a small hammerhead, but let it go because I was not going to bring it into the 17 foot boat we rented.

Although I wasn’t in charge (Warwick was the Project Manager), when we landed they thought I was the boss as I was the one wearing a suit - my colleagues were in t-shirts & shorts and someone had to keep up the standards! We had a marvellous but busy week then flew back to Bahrain.
    Almost 2 years to the day I flew out again and this time everyone knew it was “The man in the suit” again - it appears that I appear to have been the only person in living memory to visit wearing a suit, waistcoat, white shirt & tie (Windsor know of course!). frequented the Brit Club weekly. You mentioned that Americans were not like or allowed there. Don’t recall how you stated it. Also, at the time we swam in the lagoon and went snorkeling too. I must say it was a little scary. We caught sharks while fishing. On one fishing trip two of the guys did a high speed boat exit. It was absolutely awesome. I wouldn’t do it, but it was fun to be there for it.
    Overall I had a great time on the Rock. I, like many others became functioning alcoholics. Beer was plentiful until a shipment was late. Then we had to settle for the Brit Club and drink warm Tiger beer. Oh my. That was horrid. Thank the good Lord that I don’t drink anymore.
    Worst part about the year there was the internet. I was so expensive. Cable and Wireless charged by the minute. I sometimes wonder how they charge now. To the best of my recollection it was nothing to pay over $150 a month for your internet. Possibly more, but don’t remember.

    I was on Diego Garcia in 1973. I was station out of the 604thMASS/FM at Clark AB, PI. I, SSgt Aircraft Electrician (NCOIC) & TSgt Aircraft Jet Engine Mechanic, went TDY in a C141 AirVac from Clark AB via Thailand to Diego Garcia to fix another C141. DG was a British Coconut Plantation. There were 300 Navy Ops, 800 Navy CBs, USAF Civil Engineer Capt in-charge of the CBs, & 1 British Officer in-charge of the island. The U.S. Military built a 12,000 ft Runway & paid the British Government $90.00 for every Coconut Tree that was cut-down. The Natives of the island was already relocated & that left 90 wild donkeys. The Navy personnel were oustanding support for us. Infact, the 3rd night there after fixing the C141, we needed run all 4 engines. There was 19 yr old Navy Salior who ran ground outside in front the aircraft. We attached a headset/Mic cable to his T-shit. We turned on the landing lights to see him. He was instructed to verify when Engine 1L had rotation & ingnition, etc 2L, 3R, 4R. Every thing went like clock work until Engine 4R. It was a slow started with about 20 ft exhaust flame. All we could see is our ground salior shadow taking off running like hell...I said "Hey stop your Comm cable, but it was too late. It riped his T-shit off his back...shut down all four engines & went to see if he was OK. That young man thought he blew-up engine 4R. :-) Anyway, we tried running all four engines again with perfect results. The sailor couldn't wait to write home "How he helped the USAF on a C141.

The only roads that were paved were in town and the ones to the work sites. Funny he mentioned bus services. The CB’s were in charge of transportation and some guy got drunk one night while driving a bus, shortly after there were a few of us that got our bus licenses. I worked R-Site in fleet ally nothing but teletypes and tape readers and punches. We had one computer called the RIXT machine in message center. It read DD173’s and that’s it, LoL. Looks like Diego hasn't changed much since my Navy visit (USS Cook FF-1083) in the Summer of 1980. Was nice to visit after leaving Gonzo Station after 100+ days underway though. I didn't see the club though that 250+ drunk sailors terrorized one night. A small fist fight morphed into a full blown riot. That's what happens when you mix sailors from 4-5 ships that hadn't seen a port in 3+ months.

    Diego Garcia is claimed to be British but belongs to Mauritius. The Local population were all deported to Mauritius by the British to lease it back to the Americans for a massive base with B52 bombers and nuclear submarines. The Diego Garcians did not adapt very well to life in Mauritius ... They were a small island nation relied on fishing and a slow pace of life .... They never integrated in Mauritian Society . The video really shows Diego Garcia as a piece of the USA in the Indian Ocean ... The islanders are still trying to get their island back in British courts. There are nicer places to see in the Indian Ocean, Seychelles, St Brandon, Maldives, Mauritius, Rodrigues etc... where you can meet real locals rather than imported American Navy, Airforce, Marines and their contractors...

    • @demonhalo67
      @demonhalo67 Před rokem

      That analysis is indeed correct. The British government knows it’s ongoing occupation of Diego Garcia is unjustified for historical reasons but can’t return it because the UK and the US would lose it’s only territory left in the Indian Ocean with consequences for both influence and regional presence. I too noticed the American influence in the styles of concrete sidewalks, street signs, road markings and transport. It looks more US managed than British, so it is a strange relationship. The possibility therefore of a total military closedown of D.G. and exodus is pretty much zero. I have heard back in the early 2000,s, several 9/11 terrorists were brought, water boarded and interrogated here, far away from prying eyes.
