I really enjoy hear yall (yes, I'm from Oklahoma so, yall) explain things.
Eleanor: “It’s like, who died and left Aristotle in charge of ethics.” Chidi: “Plato!”
Best line on the show
It’s been weeks and I still don’t get this joke 💀😂
Aristotle was Plato's top student, basically.
This is what made me start watching the show lmao. I saw it in a gifset and knew I had to give it a try.

Michael went from literal demon to 100% selfless, only thinking about the good of his friends.
What makes it work for me is that he technically still has the same pedantic persoality with control issues. And ted denson who deserves an oscar.
Jon Snor I agree, Ted is the best part!!!
Technically he was still a literal demon tho...
SPOILER ALERT
...until the end where he becomes a human
@@IRsBlueManMoney-Channel I'm just sad I never get to see the him as a fire squid
Most underrated current television sitcom next to Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
couldn't agree more
AGREED
Both are produced by Michael Schur.
Isabelle Ostrowski yeah after the cancel/not cancel buzz is more well know... but that doesn't mean that isn't underrated since we will only tell with the next (and last) season numbers.
Beatriz Zacharias -I’m guessing they won’t be so good, sadly. They moved to a new network and are now a mid-season replacement.
None of that is a good sign.
Such great analysis! One minor change I’d make: Tahani and Jason don’t represent different types of kindness. Instead, Jason represents good intentions and Tahani represents good consequences. These opposite characters exemplify the philosophical question of whether or not an action is good because of the intentions behind it or because of its effects. Tahani’s actions have good consequences, but she acts for the wrong reasons (vanity, clout, etc.) where Jason has only the purest intentions but he never thinks about the consequences of his actions. Together, they represent how a good person must act with both good intentions and with an eye towards the effects of their actions
I agree with you 100%
That message, that a soulmate is someone who can help you to develop into a better person, and that it is not a passive cosmically chosen person but an active effort, is also from philosophy. Specifically, from Plato.
I love how The Good Place combines high quality entertainment with deep thought and meaning.
the good place is probably the most thoughtful and meaningful show their is. A lot of shows are funny, or dramatic, or cute, but this one is something else, this show actually tells us something about us and the people around us
Like Darcy and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice.
this is especially emphasized when Chidi thought he saved his parent's marriage by lecturing them on the value of their relationship. He later learned that they went to couples counselling after Chidi reminded them of their love. I always liked the moment when he finds out.
I was not ready for this show to become as good as it is.
Great video. More people need to watch more of this show.

My sister and i bingewatched the whole thing a few weeks ago
I need season 4
This show is so good and yet so underrated! The fact that the ratings are so low and that it wasn't even nominated for an Emmy makes me wander if I'm in the bad place and there is some demon out there making great underrated TV shows just to get me frustrated.
Fiorenza Agazzi LMAO
Wait, this show did bad in the ratings? Why? The writing is clever. The characters are great. The redemptions are well earned. The pacing is nice. The comedy isn’t “burst your sides” but I’ve seen a lot worse. And an all star cast? What the fork is wrong with people?
Epic Joyful Creations I tell you why! People are judging a book by its cover especially the religious.
Like, not all comedy needs to be of laugh-out-loud variety anyway. The thoughtful kinda comedy sticks with me longer, to be honest.
Emmy is trash. Community never got one. Hannibal never got one. Modern Family has a million but is - to me - only an okay show with only the first few seasons being truly cool? I don't understand what they want.
(Then they go and award Master of None and Atlanta and I get a little less frustrated. Only a bit.)
...it has a 100 percent on rotten tomatoes
ELEANOR HAS TWO HANDS ONE TO HOLD CHIDI’S AND ONE TO HOLD TAHANI’S
What do you mean?
@@palaciospalacios9319 I'm late but Eleanor is canonically bisexual so I think it might refer to it.
itsanofromme is it canon?
@@ta-iv6tq yeah, the writers confirmed it. It's also pretty obvious once you realize how many lines Eleanor has said that basically give it away. For example, she said to Real Eleanor "Are you making a move on me?" and she constantly calls Tahani hot and sexy. In the s1 finale she literally admitted it as well. "Side note, I might legit be into Tahani".
Annette Greenberg oh, that’s pretty cool! i guess i thought all those comments she made about tahani were just jokes lol

why is this show sooo underrated?!!! I've discovered read some good philosophical stuff after this show and it's funnier than the overrated sitcoms
i agree that its really good but its definitely not underrated, it's really popular
It's funny how Michael said all philosophers were in hell
Generosity and Empathy are more accurate descriptors for Tahani and Jason respectively (rather than using the same word twice??).
I agree, this is a great way to put it
the thing is, tahani is not generous, she’s just competitive
@@username-pb9ui But she has the potential to become generous, and at the end, she does become generous - she decides to spend eternity to help others without getting any recognition from it.
chidi: we can't kill her!
eleanor: not with that attitude we can't!
100th Like!🎉
I'm one of those who didn't watch The Good Place at first. I thought it was going to be too corny. But you have just explained very eloquently why this show is one of the best on TV.
Deidre G I've only watched because one of the writers of The Office and Parks and Rec is the creator of The Good Place. The show starts corny but it hides some surprises and got a lot of philosophical references that I didn't expect to see in a light comedy series
Yeah I want to watch it too now
I have gotten several people hooked on *The Good Place* by either watching it (to start) with them or telling them this truthful statement: *"Watch the first two episodes. Then, at the end of the 3rd, I promise you will be hooked!"* And that worked every time. There is a nice premise to the show in the beginning but it's easy to abandon UNTIL the end of the 3rd episode when Jason steps out and you find out he is also there by mistake. 😁
@@dr.braxygilkeycruises1460 your comment reminded me how profound the ending was and made me start crying for about 10 minutes. Again. 😭😭😭
Tahani's parents are horrible. I know it just a show but I relate to her so much.
Absolutely agreed. Tahani was just emotionally neglected and living surrounded by millionaires really made her live with superficial people who didn't really care for her emotionally.
"our parents were such wankers"
Tahani and Kamilla were seperated because of their parents, because they were biological trashbags
This is the show that takes a bunch of really complex philosophy on morality and makes them relatable.
It makes abstract ideas seem less abstract. You can get so lost in ideas that you can't put them into practice, however the show demonstrates how to link theory and practice in a meaningful way.
Holy Mother Forking Shirt Balls, I'm so delighted that you're covering this show. It's one of the best shows currently airing right now, and you don't realize how philosophical it can be.
Caitriona Quigley not saying it's a bad show but it's definitely not one of the best, objectively. It's too childish for me personally
+Noah Blunt No worries, we're all entitled to our opinions, and it's alright if you're not into a popular show. I only got through the first 5 or so episodes of "Game of Thrones", but I can see why it may appeal to others.
only major complaint would be how heavily dosed it is with SJW/progressive ideology. it's almost a deal breaker.

The narrator's voice is particularly soft and inspiring and a delight to listen to. Plus I love seeing these characters that I've grown to love so much examined in a way that connects the show's messages with ways that we can better ourselves in real life.
THE GOOD PLACE IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV! (imo)
Almost like she's an extension of Janet
This show has me saying fork so much my auto correct is learning it
Holy shirt, same here.
Chidi being in hell is just hard for me to accept. The standard for what’s a good person is so hard that it makes me think there is no version of humanity can truly be good.
I've known people in my own life who were so rigid in their morality that they made decisions which actually hurt people, and that can sometimes cause as much harm as being amoral. Think about fundamentalist Christians.
Chidi had good intentions, but he didn't have enough good actions. Tahani had actions, but not enough good intentions.
He missed out on a funeral because he promised to help his nephew with his new phone. Enough poor decision making like that would probs send anyone to hell :c
He was selfish. He didn’t think of others. He thought about his outward appearance and his desire for enlightenment. It’s not what’s outside, but what is inside.
Also, as it has been recently revealed (spoiler alert) , no one has gotten into the good place in over 500 years. So it is acknowledging that the point system is flawed.
This is a great video, just one thing: I feel like, if anything, this proves that all FOUR of them are soulmates, together - because they make each other better.
I hope Chidi can get the development he deserves.
While he had a lot of screen time in season two, his arc was given the least focus.
Chidi and Jason could both use a lot time developing. Jason is mostly just used for gags at the moment.
I watched this show on a whim. Didn’t even know what it was about but I’m so glad that gave it a chance!
I'm calling it now. It's not the bad place. It's purgatory. This whole series has felt very danteisk so far, and the steady improvement of all the chars throughout the series and the fact that they were given the opportunity to improve... and the way their challenges up until now are very similar to the trials of the mountain in purgatory that the redeemable souls have to climb to earn their way into "the good place"
wow! Interesting theory! I wouldn't be surprised though - this show loves to take our assumptions and turn them on their heads.
I had to read a dreadful short story in high school about imprisoned people who had to wring all the water out of a towel to be released, but they had all these hurdles to overcome which caused most to fail. One cell of people finally succeeded, and their captors told them "You're already free" and doused the towel with water again. The end.
I think it'd be great at the end of this show if the gang found out they had been in the good place all along, but none of them truly believed they belonged there, so they were put through all of these trials so that they would be able to say I've earned my place here! and they'd know in their hearts that they should be allowed to stay. Then they could accept the joys of being in the good place, too. They would have also learned how to appreciate their soul mates and why they belong together, so they can truly exist happily ever after. :)
Oh...I though the middle place is where Mindy st Claire resides was purgatory.
First season I was thinking either the bad place or purgatory (I kept hearing the line from that one Sassy Gay Friend video in my head: "This can't be paradise, because it's full of mistakes!). I'm thinking purgatory is still a possibility... With the caveat that it's still "the bad place," in as much as the people running the bad place aren't aware that they're being used by an even higher power.

Low key best show on TV
High key"
I kind of want them to look more into chidi’s life in season 3. I feel like there must be more to him being in the bad place, more than just “he made people frustrated.”.
I think it's not just that he made people frustrated, but that (like this video said) he spent more time thinking about good than doing it. It makes me think of the idea that "it's not your talents that make you special, but what you do with them" or something along those lines. Like, if throughout his life he made things harder than they needed to be, and frustrated people, and he didn't apply his knowledge or theories in the real world, in a way that helped, then in an extreme exaggerated case of this, his net "good" impact on the world would be outweighed by his net "bad" impact.
Am I going to the Bad Place because i think life is a hoax and it's not worth chasing success, or even seeing friends and family all that much, because nothing matters, there is no meaning to life, and everything is chaos?
I think THE GOOD PLACE exists to show why the afterlife is a stupid fantasy for morons.
@@GlennDavey I don't believe in the afterlife either. But this show is the most amazing thought experiment for me. And also, if we were certain afterlife existed, wouldn't we try to be better people? One shitty thing about our world - among many - is that ethical ramifications aren't always present. This thought of The Good Place puts philosophy is a situation where goodness is not just for its own sake but has legit consequences for your fate. I really like the idea. :D
Glenn Davey - I think the good place is meant to show that whatever your beliefs are, we could all consider the weight of our actions a little more (but not take it so far that we’re frozen like Chidi all the time.) The show prompts us to think more about morality and what we do with our time while we’re still here, and really consider “what we owe to each other”.
Personally I think that we owe it to each other to be good caretakers of the earth and of each other while we’re here, because even once we’ve all died-even once all our memories are lost, and the world ends-our actions still had an impact on each other while we were still here. It’s about empathy. Even if all things move towards chaos and everything eventually ends, we still feel. If someone punched you right now, you would feel it, no matter what the end fate of humanity. All the pain, all the good and bad memories & experiences of the people that lived were real and existed while they happened- all the kindness too-even if you think they’re “lost” or have no consequence after death.
I can totally understand not wanting to chase after an idea of success you don’t believe in, especially something that feels hollow or pointless. And I can understand drifting from friends or family, especially if you deal with depression (which it sounds like you do). I’ve been there, and in some ways I’m still there.
But at the same time...if you think you owe nothing to anyone, and that your actions don’t have an effect because everything is entropy and who cares anyways, well, then I think that kind of makes you sound like an asshole, and your nihilism makes you sound very frustrated and sad. I don’t know, I just hope that gets better for you.
Sure, the show illustrates that the idea of “point totals” for good and bad actions over a lifetime is silly and arbitrary, and it pokes fun at the idea of heaven and hell. But I don’t think the show agrees with your philosophy at all. The show prompts us to consider the effects of our actions. It’s not mocking morality, it’s just kind of making fun of humans for being so bad at it.
I think regardless of whether “the good place” is a fantasy, we should still strive to treat each other decently while we’re still here, because our actions still have an impact while we’re here-that’s all we really know for sure.
This is coming from an irreligious person btw.
He kind of tortured people by not taking a decicion ever. Inaction is still a response to a problem. And not a good one in most cases.
Eleanor: Gryffindor
Chidi: Ravenclaw
Tahani: Slytherin
Jason: Hufflepuff
It's funny bc I took a test to see which two houses I was and I got huffleclaw, and then I took a different quiz to see which 2 Good Place characters I was and I got Chidi/Jason 😂 so I think you're spot on
I think Eleanor is also a Slytherin.
One of my favorite shows on air right now. ❤
So many times i have to postpone watching one of your videos to not get spoiled, but I finished the show two weeks ago and I get suuper excited watching videos about it. You never fail to deliver wonderful insights :)
So we've come to a conclusion that Michael Schur is a genius writer
Good Place surprised me by how good and funny it was. It's also interesting to learn about various branches of philosophy. The only character I cannot stand is Jason because he just goes "duuh derp derp" all the time.
Yeah, they did that to Andy (Parks and Rec), though he was really adorable, made him too dumb. That is a Mike Schur thing for some reason. Literally the only flaw of the man!
Ahh i love jason. He’s so sweet
I love Jason personally, yeah he's dumb, but he's sweet and good to his friends
how could you? Jason is so sweet! Plus hes wise
Farah Stauffer he is sweet. Just very derpy lmao
Or are you a michael, a pedant who has to learn to let go of his controlling tendencies and learn to embrace your flaws.
Or a janet who is loyal, funny and helpful, while still learning a lot about the world or a male janet.
Those two are important to human nature as well, just not as universal..
AHHH! Give us season 3 already!!!!
Very interesting insight! I'd love to see another video analyzing the different philosophical and literary references in the show. The show particularly reminds me of the premise of Huis Clos/No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre, and that would interesting to hear you explore. Love your videos!
Theres another video that actually does compare no exit to the good place! It's by a different channel tho i forget who...i think it was called wisecrack. They think the good place is a literal modern child of no exit because of how insanely similar they are
When it ends eleanor become a conscience, as she always speaks of the voice in your head and when she floats up at the end she goes into a man and she makes him go give a piece of mail to michael
You missed off Michael and Janet;
Janet supposedly knows everything yet has the development of a child so she represents the power of innocence to do good and how if you are “coded” does good it even count. (Spoilers ahead)
Michael is a demon who learns to be good by faking it so he represents how our reputation can make us make good or bad choices.
The good place is probably the most thoughtful and meaningful show their is. A lot of shows are funny, or dramatic, or cute, but this one is something else, this show actually tells us something about us and the people around us
Great. Crying at my phone again. I love, LOVE this show. And it's interesting how it gets a heart string pull in just when you're expecting a guffaw; and vice versa.
same
I think it plays in with socionics too : Elanor is extroverted thinking(Te), she makes all the decisions, Chidi is introverted thinking(Ti) because he has all the information, Jason is introverted feeling(Fi) because of his personal kindness and tehani is extroverted feeling(Fe)because of her need for kindness in the community. But all of these people express these seeming good traits in a negative way, because by over using one function over every other, we become incomplete humans.
And even in personality typing, you're best long term partner is the one who has opposite functions(Te with Ti and Fe with Fi)
I’m Chidi though. Honestly.
Are you? Are you sure? Do you know that for certain? ggggg
Honestly i see a lot of him in me too.
I'm a mix of eleanor chidi and tahani
Criminally indecisive brown man wearing glasses, talking philosophy, and significantly influenced by French colonization? Yup it me XD
one of the biggest moments for Elanor for me was when she pretended to fail the judges test for her just so the others wouldn't feel bad that they all passed and she failed
I always equate the four characters to the four nations from Avatar the last airbender, Eleanor has the will of the fire nation, Jason the kindness and freewheeling nature of the air nomads, Tahani has the elegance and generosity of the water tribes and although Chidi is a bit hard to place, I consider his stubborn adherence to morality to be akin to the earth kingdom's steadfastness. Together they are perfect. :)
I love the message that people can evolve in the right environment with enough support so prevalent in this show
This is my new favorite show of all time.
YESSSSSSS! I am so glad you've picked this show to talk about!!!
Jason and Janet forever!!!!

How do you guys finds clips to match up with what you're saying
Iremide Awosika DVD? Screen record
Dez lol. No I meant how do they find the exact clips for what they're talking about. Eg last vid was on Phoebe. They said she was somewhat of an outcast and they marched that with a clip of someone describing her with that word
Iremide Awosika
There is a book that talks about this process. It's for books, but it is the same principle. "Read Like a Professor." They first watched the series. Made notes on reocuring themes. They probably wrote down which episodes and minutes those themes occurred. Wrote their scripts and went back to their notes for the exact scene.
They most likely watched the series twice before writing the script.
Kris W thank you
Kris W thats why what screenprism does impresses me to no end. It must take so much time and effort to watch all these shows and movies and then compile clips and a well written script for it.

Nice to see a video about The Good Place. I’ve been really enjoying this show. Excellent analysis on the characters.
Much of Westworld could have been avoided if Chidi was involved.
Also, there's a lot of similarities between The Good Place and Westworld I didn't see until now. I know WW came out in 2013, but there are a lot of similarly scenes in TGP. Like Elenor walking into the mansion.

YASSSSSS I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOUR VIDEO ON THIS SPECTACULAR, ADORABLE SHOW
This make so much sense. The characters, what they were in the beginning. I feel like a big part of me is Jason, a kind goofy and also a little confused all the time, not understanding social clues. Then I crave for acceptance like Tahani and do everything I can to get that. Then I worry like Chidi, getting stuck to every little detail. Then when I'm tired of trying and nothing comes out of it, I'm like Eleanor, going "me first" in life.
So glad that y'all are giving this show the attention it deserves! Your videos are always absolutely stellar. Could you try to do a video on The Crown before Season 3 comes out later this year with the new cast? I think the Season 1-2 arc is a great thing to analyze and there's so much material there. As always love your videos - especially your new Harry Potter series. I'm looking forward to more!
Thanks, I knew you were gonna make a video about this great show. As always awesome😍
I love that you're covering this show !
Have you seen Timeless? There's food for thought in there, for sure. Sadly, it's already getting cancelled after a short second season because it's very expensive to produce (as each episode takes place in a different time period, they have to get new sets, wardrobe...). How I wish Netflix would pick it up.
MsLyraGW. Timeless would have been less expensive to shoot for the BBC as they pay actors very badly and they have a massive period piece wardrobe warehouse. These shows were easier to do in the US in the 60s due to the numerous period shows run by each studio.
As it is they contracted the set, vehicle and costumes from a firm in Arizona. The period uniforms were reenactor uniforms subcontracted. The one about Benedict Arnold used costumes from Spies.
Timeless was pretty good the first year, but in the second year after cancellation one, the writers pandered too much to lovestruck fans that wrote letters to save the show. Therefore the second year was less complex adventure and more soap opera romance. This sudden turn is common in shows saved from the axe for ONE MORE YEAR. Star Trek (original series) and Magnum PI are two examples.
I love this show so much! Thank you for doing this video!! :D
