    Such great analysis! One minor change I’d make: Tahani and Jason don’t represent different types of kindness. Instead, Jason represents good intentions and Tahani represents good consequences. These opposite characters exemplify the philosophical question of whether or not an action is good because of the intentions behind it or because of its effects. Tahani’s actions have good consequences, but she acts for the wrong reasons (vanity, clout, etc.) where Jason has only the purest intentions but he never thinks about the consequences of his actions. Together, they represent how a good person must act with both good intentions and with an eye towards the effects of their actions

One cell of people finally succeeded, and their captors told them "You're already free" and doused the towel with water again. The end.
      I think it'd be great at the end of this show if the gang found out they had been in the good place all along, but none of them truly believed they belonged there, so they were put through all of these trials so that they would be able to say I've earned my place here! and they'd know in their hearts that they should be allowed to stay. Then they could accept the joys of being in the good place, too. They would have also learned how to appreciate their soul mates and why they belong together, so they can truly exist happily ever after. :)

It makes me think of the idea that "it's not your talents that make you special, but what you do with them" or something along those lines. Like, if throughout his life he made things harder than they needed to be, and frustrated people, and he didn't apply his knowledge or theories in the real world, in a way that helped, then in an extreme exaggerated case of this, his net "good" impact on the world would be outweighed by his net "bad" impact.

    • @zaboomafooba
      @zaboomafooba Před 5 lety +11

      Glenn Davey - I think the good place is meant to show that whatever your beliefs are, we could all consider the weight of our actions a little more (but not take it so far that we’re frozen like Chidi all the time.) The show prompts us to think more about morality and what we do with our time while we’re still here, and really consider “what we owe to each other”.
      Personally I think that we owe it to each other to be good caretakers of the earth and of each other while we’re here, because even once we’ve all died-even once all our memories are lost, and the world ends-our actions still had an impact on each other while we were still here. It’s about empathy. Even if all things move towards chaos and everything eventually ends, we still feel. If someone punched you right now, you would feel it, no matter what the end fate of humanity. All the pain, all the good and bad memories & experiences of the people that lived were real and existed while they happened- all the kindness too-even if you think they’re “lost” or have no consequence after death.
      I can totally understand not wanting to chase after an idea of success you don’t believe in, especially something that feels hollow or pointless. And I can understand drifting from friends or family, especially if you deal with depression (which it sounds like you do). I’ve been there, and in some ways I’m still there.
      But at the same time...if you think you owe nothing to anyone, and that your actions don’t have an effect because everything is entropy and who cares anyways, well, then I think that kind of makes you sound like an asshole, and your nihilism makes you sound very frustrated and sad. I don’t know, I just hope that gets better for you.
      Sure, the show illustrates that the idea of “point totals” for good and bad actions over a lifetime is silly and arbitrary, and it pokes fun at the idea of heaven and hell. But I don’t think the show agrees with your philosophy at all. The show prompts us to consider the effects of our actions. It’s not mocking morality, it’s just kind of making fun of humans for being so bad at it.
      I think regardless of whether “the good place” is a fantasy, we should still strive to treat each other decently while we’re still here, because our actions still have an impact while we’re here-that’s all we really know for sure.
      This is coming from an irreligious person btw.

    I think it plays in with socionics too : Elanor is extroverted thinking(Te), she makes all the decisions, Chidi is introverted thinking(Ti) because he has all the information, Jason is introverted feeling(Fi) because of his personal kindness and tehani is extroverted feeling(Fe)because of her need for kindness in the community. But all of these people express these seeming good traits in a negative way, because by over using one function over every other, we become incomplete humans.
    And even in personality typing, you're best long term partner is the one who has opposite functions(Te with Ti and Fe with Fi)

Together they are perfect. :)

      There is a book that talks about this process. It's for books, but it is the same principle. "Read Like a Professor." They first watched the series. Made notes on reocuring themes. They probably wrote down which episodes and minutes those themes occurred. Wrote their scripts and went back to their notes for the exact scene.
      They most likely watched the series twice before writing the script.

    This make so much sense. The characters, what they were in the beginning. I feel like a big part of me is Jason, a kind goofy and also a little confused all the time, not understanding social clues. Then I crave for acceptance like Tahani and do everything I can to get that. Then I worry like Chidi, getting stuck to every little detail. Then when I'm tired of trying and nothing comes out of it, I'm like Eleanor, going "me first" in life.

    I love that you're covering this show !
    Have you seen Timeless? There's food for thought in there, for sure. Sadly, it's already getting cancelled after a short second season because it's very expensive to produce (as each episode takes place in a different time period, they have to get new sets, wardrobe...). How I wish Netflix would pick it up.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 Před 5 lety

      MsLyraGW. Timeless would have been less expensive to shoot for the BBC as they pay actors very badly and they have a massive period piece wardrobe warehouse. These shows were easier to do in the US in the 60s due to the numerous period shows run by each studio.
      As it is they contracted the set, vehicle and costumes from a firm in Arizona. The period uniforms were reenactor uniforms subcontracted. The one about Benedict Arnold used costumes from Spies.
      Timeless was pretty good the first year, but in the second year after cancellation one, the writers pandered too much to lovestruck fans that wrote letters to save the show. Therefore the second year was less complex adventure and more soap opera romance. This sudden turn is common in shows saved from the axe for ONE MORE YEAR. Star Trek (original series) and Magnum PI are two examples.
