Sonic has fought a stronger god before; Solaris. And yes, he remembers. Dark Gaia is incredibly powerful too, seeing as it could actually hurt Super Sonic.

Oddly enough, I think the song "It Has To Be This Way" fits this boss fight really well. Both Sonic and Merlina are fighting for what each believe to be the right thing to do, both have good intentions, yet their objectives clash and has them fight each other.
Say what you want about Sonic stories back then being edgy and too dark for their own good, you can't tell me that you prefer Jesus God Chuck Norris Untouchable Sonic versus Eggman in Death Egg Robot Number Six over them turning the story of King Arthur into a shonen anime JRPG one wing angel showdown between Warrior Of Light Sonic and Best Twist Villain In The Sonic Series Dark Queen.

Excalibur Sonic is definitely an awesome form, just a shame these forms never get a shot and they Milk Super Sonic but don't change anything, he was never all about Boost as in Sonic Chronicles:The Dark Brotherhood, he only has a combat ability sharing his name and I so want it explored again, hopefully Fronteirs can bring it back.
I wouldn’t consider Merlina’s execution to be necessarily ‘Edgy’. You do have a point with Knuckles attempting suicide. But that’s about it. Aside from that 1-2 minute part of the game, the rest isn’t very edgy to me.
