How to Repair a PS4 Analog Stick That is Drifting, Sticking, Jittery/Cleaning DualShock 4 Controller

- QUICK AND TO THE POINT. When I try to "sprint" in first-person shooters it sometimes doesn't work. Instead my character goes normal speed, stutters, stops, or even goes backward. This has happened to my on two different PS4 DualShock controllers. By cleaning the inside the of the analog stick I was able to fix the issue. No soldering was needed. In the video, I disassemble and break down the controller in order to take it apart and get inside. I then clean with a Q-tip and alcohol, and put everything back together.

FAQ (updated 2/11/23)
Q: I did it, but it no longer charges, or the light no longer works, or won't come on. What should I do?
A: The ribbon cable shown at 1:27 is what feeds the charging and light. Make sure it's securely in. Also, for certain variations of controllers, the contacts need to face AWAY from the battery, so go in an flip it around.
Q: Why can't I close the little door?
A: There are three pegs and two latch thingies on the plastic door that snap into the metal. One of your pegs may be bent. You can try to unbend it, or clip it off with something like a nail clipper.
Q: I’m apprehensive about doing this. What should I do?
A: Watch my BETTER video about fixing it: • How to Fix Analog Stic... . It has some lower stress ways to potentially fix the issue.
Q: Did you say "though soldering is required"?
A: I said "no soldering is required"
Q: My two halves does not "gently" come apart.
A: It can be tight. I wanted to make sure people didn't put full force and snap the ribbon cable that connects the two halves.
Q: Why would I want to waste my time doing this? Just buy a new one!
A: If you are going to toss it anyway, may just want to give it a try. Besides, you may learn something new.
Q: A screw won’t come out. What should I do?
A: Drop one drop of water into it, and while it soaks, get rid of any gunk around it. Also tap on it.
Q: What size screwdriver did you use?
A: “Phillips #00”. It works with other sizes too.

ATTENTION: there was one thing not mentioned in the video, DO NOT repeatedly pry open that green door, it can break and if it breaks, the analog stick will be useless.
I guess that’s what happened to mine
phew thanks my guy
Absolutely lost all analog now 🤦🏽♂️
I had to rebend the little copper parts on the little white disk inside I pried it open way to hard it works fine now though
You can use a small flat head screwdriver to get in between the green piece and what’s it attached to. Then slowly wiggle the flat head left to right and it’ll pry it open enough for you to pull it back all the way a lot easier. When you pull it out it should be at a 45-60 degree angle

I had a problem where my analogue was not functioning properly, but as I watched this video and followed through the steps carefully, it worked dang fine. It took me 3 hours but it was worth it. Thank you man you deserve all the best ❤
Good tutorial, just used it myself and worked perfectly. I tried everything I could find without taking it apart and it got me nowhere so having this so frankly explained was very helpful. I didn't even use any tools, just a knife and my wife's eyebrow tweezers
Thank you! Very easy fix actually! The PS3 controller was much more difficult to repair.

Worked for me, though I almost broke the plastic that holds the battery since mine needs to be unscrewed first before pulling it out. Anyhow, your tutorial worked like a charm and I'm a happy man. Thanks a bunch!
Which version did you have?
@@jaaanai Video controller is a first edition dualshock. The second edition dualshocks (the ones that have the light bar in the front) do have a screw on the plastic plate, it should be unscrewed before taking the plate out. Also, the reset button is part of that plate on the DS2, so you dont have to worry about losing it.

Very helpful video here. Was able to follow and resolve the drift issue in about 20 mins including procuring tools and cleaning supplies.
Thanks a lot for the tutorial! My TLOU2 limited edition controller’s right analog started drifting upwards about 2 months ago. I considered buying a new one, however, these things cost about 1/3 of a minimum wage in my country! So i decided to clean my controller! It was hell of a process. Especially, taking the top cover required a lot of pressure and time. I ended up breaking two corner clips but the controller works pretty well right now! Thanks a lot!
Thanks to this video, I have fixed the error that my joystick kept moving.

Anyone making any sort of instructional content should take note of this guy. No nonsense, quick, straight to the point, informative, explaining solutions to problems you might run into. This is how you do an instructional video.
Followed step-by-step, controller is now working perfectly! Thank you for the help. It gets quite delicate in a few steps but as long as you use proper tools (pliers, small screwdriver, q-tips) and are very careful, the controller will be fine.
Thank you so much, I wasn’t sure if it was gonna work
I used mass airflow cleaner instead of contact cleaner (leaves near to zero residue) and it worked a charm!
This worked wonders! I bought a “broken” controller for nothing, and this fix made it Great again! 😁👍
I've just fixed that annoying "involuntary" camera movement for the right stick.
Not to mention that I've never opened a PS4 controller before in my life!!!
I'm really thankful for your tutorial!!!

I don't have alcohol to clean with, so I just used a dry Q-tip. It still got some grime out but sadly it didn't help solve the drifting issue. But thank you for this video, it was very clear and easy to follow. At least it also didn't make the problem worse. I will try again by cleaning with alcohol and see if that helps.
Thank you brother that ACTUALLY worked! I thought my modded controller was done for.

There are four tiny tabs that keep it together after the screws are out. If they break while taking it apart, DO NOT WORRY. I tested, and you can actually break all four, and it'll still go back together easily.

@@Albanez39 it's just a joke😂
@@Helios_0011 I know...It just saddens me to see people panic for simple tasks like this one. I'm just 25 years old, but I can't conceive how most people (mostly guys) are incapable of using tools and fixing simple issues around the house (a faulty plug, an old pipe, their own bicycle etc.)
@@Albanez39 I completely understand some people don't know what things like fuses are
@@Helios_0011 Well, many people around the world don't know of their existence. British people are familiar with them because after WWII Britain started to use fuses inside every single plug (so you could have one entire electric line going around the house instead of many shorter copper wires) because copper was scarce at the time.
Many other countries quickly reverted, but Great Britain still continues using fuses inside plugs. I live in Albania which often had makeshift electrical lines and wiring inside homes. Moreover, I work with soldering and low-volt projects in addition to studying electronics in high school (professional 4 year school)...
So...are you British or just familiar with fuses?
Thought this would be easy but I’d rather just buy a whole new controller 😂

Thank you so much for this video. I had a slight drift to the left on the left stick but after following your instruction and cleaning it, it seems to have fixed it. The opening on the left "door" was quite dirty, which was probably the cause.
Many thanks, you have saved my controller and my pocket! Had an issue with the dpad bottom button which was not working but an other tutorial suggested that I used a graphite based pencil and rub it over the circle of the plastic circuit board! Worked! (graphite is conductive) Used your tutorial to solve a directional stuttering problem, worked! A cotton bud is ideal to clean the contacts and don't be afraid to use some force to close the hinge! What have you got to lose? Your controller doesn't work properly anyway. Love utube, thanks again.
I removed the four screws on the back and blew air into it. It solved my analog drift. Thanks so much
