  • Full review of the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok in 222kW Aventura TSI452 petrol trim, with references to the TDI600 diesel V6 model in Panamericana trim, including off-road driving.
The second-generation Volkswagen Amarok has just launched and for the first time in Australia it is available with a turbocharged petrol engine as an optional alternative to the 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 that is a tradition for the Amarok. You can only get the TSI petrol engine, Ford’s 2.3-litre Ecoboost motor, in the $79,990 Amarok Aventura trim. So, does the gasoline version make sense, or should you buy the diesel?
The Amarok competes with its platform-collaborating cousin, the Ford Ranger, plus other utes like the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50 and many more.

As an amarok ultimate lover, I couldn’t wait for the details on the new one, so have a platinum Ranger on order.
Both the new amarok and Ranger look a bit to tall and thin, I’m used to the current amarok which appears to be much wider and has more presence. The new v6 diesel doesn’t have the urge of the current amarok.
At the end of the day they are now both the same vehicle in different clothing. Like the ford/Mazda relationship, both brands told you how they were different, but when you looked under a Mazda BT 50 all the suspension components had FoMo stickers and serial numbers on them. I don’t think much has changed. And gone are those lovely ergonomic front seats you got in the ultimate. 😢

The petrol model is a good idea. Good for people who mainly live in the city and like to get out for a camp/explore every few months. Would be a good daily driver with its nice internals so big tick for families. No need to worry about DPF issues as well. Diesel will suits many. If VW offered petrol in the lower spec I reckon it would kick off. Good options for everyone!

VW are still estimating that diesel vs petrol sales will possibly & likely be around 70% diesel to about 30% petrol. Very likely those figures could change

Wow the prices in Australia are actually not bad. As an Amarok owner I would love to see the new ones in México, however I wonder what the price tag would be as the current highline (previous for you folks) is higher than the aventura you have just reviewed. Looks really really cool though...

Personally I’ve chosen the 2.0 twin turbo diesel, because it is itself superbly refined and powerful and more economical than the V6 in every way, to buy, to fuel and service. Lighter weight also, which makes a surprising difference to already front heavy pickups.

If you dumped the chrome gill, reomved the stupid silver pain, the front would look much better. Interior looks a whole step up on the Ranger though, sans climate knobs. I cant under stand why you remove climate knobs but waste money on a headlight switch that only ever needs to be in auto.
