Anyone else doing this to look better at tennis than they actually are?
Haha me!!! Thanks for watching!!
Yup, I'm trying this tomorrow right after a tweener😂
I think this is why EVERYbody does it. 😅
Just like every other trick😂
I will certainly try it with this intent 😂
Wow, great analysis and thank you so much to share.
Awesome video! Thanks!
Very good step by step instructions
Superb video. It does help your control of the ball. Thanks Ryan.
Fantastic instruction wow! Thanks!
Great learning path! Thanks for the effort!
thanks so much for sharing, I always wondered how they did that
Great video Ryan!! 🎾
I've been trying to do this ever since I saw Lasusa do it years ago...Amazing
Love it! So cool.
Thanks for the video 😉
Great info
Appreciate the video
Thank you bro
Wow, what a great tutorial, it’s actually pretty easy, you know it’s a great lesson if you get it after only 15 minutes of practice, great job!!! Couldn’t have found a better one
Thanks. Been looking for trick tutorial for ages. You'll make me the coolest player of my generation. BTW, we have the same tennis machine.
You are great for the sport. Your attention to detail and love of teaching make learning fun! Thank you for all that you do.
What an amazing comment. Thank you ymca
Cool, awesome touch, awesome lesson!
Now, as it has been brought up in comments already about volleying, for which this touch will be greatly helpful, can you do a demonstration of using that catching skill touch to do legal drop volleys? That would be helpful to game use, thanks!!
Love to see this kind of explanations also 👌🏻
Glad to help you!
Great tutorial!!! You make it look so easy!
Thank you!!
Man! I’ve always wanted to do this. Thank you for explanation. It’s a beautiful movement
I agree - can’t hurt for your touch game
So nice! Great lesson Thank you
Thanks so much for watching. Appreciate the support!
Excellent teacher. Cool skill.
Hey thank you! Your comment means a lot harmony!
🤩 Thank you!
COOL. I love it!
That was exactly what I was looking for, I love it.
So glad to help you Jose!
Super cool trick.....😎
You split step even when you’re doing this! Love it, Ryan.👍
Haha it’s so ingrained that there’s no way for me not to split step.
Ryan, just curious, when and how did you learn this trick? How long did you need to practice?
Fun video! I have another idea for a video. How about a review of the top portable ball machines on the market for the recreational player?
Awesome Thank You
Happy to help you John!
wow I am spending my radio time doing this drills.
I literally was looking for good instructions on how to do this over the weekend! So thank you for a great tutorial on it! I want to learn this because I know it will also help improve my sense of touch and feel (plus, it looks cool, obviously)
Haha thanks Ryan. Hope the instructions help you. With practice you’ll get it…and look cool!
Of course you are trying to improve your sense of touch and feel you just wanna have a cool party trick to show off....??
Love it! Am going out to practice and [hopefully] will look cool on the court! 😅
Keep me posted how you do!
freaking awesome. I bet this is the ONLY video teaching this out there.
Haha thanks! You’re probably right.
One of my favourite internet tennis coach. I have diligently followed his coaching on internet and have greatly benefitted. Thank you Ryan ! Much love from India!
Wow thank you so much Bravo!
That’s so cool ryan.
Thank you so much!
Nice 👍
Could you make a video on how to aim the ball at the feet of a player approaching the net? This is such a key shot, and I literally can't see any advice for it anywhere online.
Impressive!!!
Hey thanks so much!!!
It looks so good haha
Glad you liked it!
I ve always wanted to do this trick. Now it’s time to try it out. I m so sure that it s harder than it looks
It’s very hard but with practice gets easier. I think it’s the one skill I can do like the pros.
This is too funny. This is one of the drills I have been practicing this summer in order to develop soft touch and feel. Yours are so smooth and magical. I'm not there yet but at least I can catch the ball not bouncing all over the racquet. I just thought it's funny to see this video coincidentally.
So glad you tried this skill out and can do it. I’ve been doing this for decades so the “smoothness” comes from getting a real feel for the ball. Thanks for watching and good luck!
That intro was extremely impressive! Thanks Ryan :)
Thanks so much Nicky!!
Sometimes you are just stuck in trying to have Wawrinka's backhand, that you forget to have fun, this is a great way of doing it
You do better than the Pros!
Nice Fun Skill 🎾
Thanks so much Doug!
Looks very impressive
Thanks so much!!
When you play tennis for long enough, will learn this skill
Haha true. Thanks so much!
What should be the proper grip? And should you catch the ball in the sweet spot or to the side?
Could help me develop drop volleys which I really struggle with. Thanks
thanks from korea!
Glad to help you!
Super!
Thank you so much
Actually it's a very good drill to help keep your eye on the ball, something that I struggle with
Ryan. Great trick. I saw this tennis trick. I have seen someone stand close to the net. Hit a slice shot over the net. And have the ball bounce ball back over the net. Do you think you could teach that trick online?
Thank you. This is exactly what my little daughter is looking for. 😝
Woah that was more helpful than I expected it to be…
Genius
Thanks so much!
Show! 👏👏👏👏
Finally, I'm ready for the ATP Tour!
haha thanks so much!!
Me too, and I'm almost 50 years old!😂
I taught my kids the same type of motion to catch water balloons during water balloon tossing contests. A more subtle and precise technique than catching an egg.
you make it look so easy, but this is actually hard to pull off
On the forehand do you teach the Vic Braden fixed wrist or the modern day roll (windshield wipe) ?
I do not teach a windshield wiper finish.
That's something different and fun😊
Thought I’d make a video to show how to practice it.
@@2MinuteTennis 🙏
magician
Like a magnet
Now you got a real ball machine. I have been using a Spinshot Player for over a year. It works great. I have the high speed option. Don't forget to put the handle down when you're hitting. Don't want to break it. What model do you have?
Sounds like I have the same version as you. Thanks so much!!
Imagine going to your club, renting out the ball machine and all they see you doing is practicing catching tennis balls with your racquet.
Are you saying I’ve never done that? Hahaha
so cool😍
Appreciate you watching!!
Great tutorial! I tried just catching the ball after throwing it but I can’t get it to not bounce even a little bit. In your video you do it so smooth! Is it also possible to continue to the next step while it’s still bouncing a little bit or do you need to be able catch it perfectly first?
It takes months of practice. Ans I don’t mean 2 or 3. I mean 9 or 10 months to get this.
Thanks for the quick respond!
Finally something useful on this channel!! JK can’t wait to learn this
Wow!
Glad you liked the video!!
Do you think you could make a quick tutorial on how to pick up a tennis ball by tapping it with your racket? It would help me a lot to look more professional during tryouts. Thanks!
Of course! Happy to make it soon!
@@2MinuteTennis I am sure there are several other racket/ball skills along the same line that aren't used in games yet look cool and add to one's overall racket control and feel. One guy showed years ago my a some racket twirl move with the ball on the strings the whole time.
@@scrabbleking1965 haha I’ll have to make a video on racket trick like the one you mentioned. Thanks for watching!!!
Continental grip, one hard tap, and a second smoother tap. Lots of practice and you’ll get it.
@@andresf1984 CONTINENTAL GRIP!?!?!?!??! Nearly impossible to use that grip to pick up a ball off the court!!!! Semi western grip MUCH MUCH better and hold the racket somewhat close to the throat and tap the ball as close to the tip of the racket as possible. Explanation of grips video. czcams.com/video/2Nrl4nBGSxk/video.html
Always wanted to learn this Nadal & Federer make it Whooooohhh🔥🔥🔥
There are few things I can do like a pro. But this, this I can do. I’ve been doing this since I was 12. Haha thanks!
@@2MinuteTennis Wowww 🤣🤣 between Sir Coach Could I ask I use a One handed backhand with the Yonex Vcore 95 Flame Red (2018) & I love serving with power like John Isner but i feel the 95 frame sometyms costs me in a match since tennis is all about slight chances What Yonex Racquet do you think would be great for a one handed backhand I plan to go Pro through Futures Tournaments when am done with my Software Engineering course but I still train with the University Coach & was thinking of improving my game starting with a 97 frame or any frame of your choice Yonex like how Federer & Nadal use a 97 frame for a sweeter hit spot I heard the 97D z not easy to play with & the new Yonex Vcore 95 2021 is not all that awesome compared to the Yonex Vcore 95 flame red 2018 what advice would you give 😅
Please what are the benefits of catching the ball this way in your racquet and how does it help your game?
Racket control. Like a soccer player juggling over and over or bouncing a ball on their head. Tennis players who can do this have incredible racket control and gain the feel needed to hit great shots.
@@2MinuteTennis Many thanks and a great tip to follow, especially as you can practice it during a match, quietly. Please are there any other variations to this drill? Kind regards....
Is the other key to your ball catching success your split step?
If you catch the ball like this and then continue motion to toss the ball off racket back onto other side of the net - is that a valid shot or can you make a valid shot which absorbs all energy and then gently toss off to other side?
This is not a valid shot. You can’t “carry” the ball. Against the rules.
I have inadvertently on some backhands carried the ball with the inside tip of my racket to heave a drop shot to my opponent’s backhand side and nobody has ever called it illegal. It happens pretty quick, though. I’ve always wondered whether this “shot putting” is legal as long as you do it quick and don’t hold the ball too long.
An answer on Quora says it’s legal if it’s unintentional and gave an example where a pro was ruled against because he changed the angle of his racket to flick the ball in an aimed direction.
Could you please explain what is the point of doing this drill?
It’s a skill that tennis players like trying to learn. People have asked for me to make a video on it. So I did.
I hold racquet in my right hand and catch balls coming at me with the left. Now Im ready for the serve toss
Cool. Next video - how to bounce the ball off the floor with the racket.
i need tennis lessons
What are you looking to improve?
@@2MinuteTennis my game, LOL
Can I do it during an important match to get the point?
You cannot. This is just a cool trick. If you did this I’d a match you’d automatically lose the point. You cannot catch the ball or “carry” it. Thanks!!!
@@2MinuteTennis It just was a joke!
@@2MinuteTennis Mac Enroe could have done it for the match point only!
Thanks. Can we have a tweener lesson next?
Ohhh…you mean this?!? :) czcams.com/video/fRYSF44TsRg/video.html
@@2MinuteTennis Zactly, thanks.
Tried that one wish i was better protected. “Don’t try this at home”. I’ll go for the “side lob” thank you very much :)
It didn't take too long, maybe from some other sport like basketball helps to get the feel of how to absorb the speed.
The slow motion still fast as hell
Actually, aren't you allowed to touch the ball more than once with the racquet in matches? Whose point is it then if you catch the ball like that and it just simply does not leave the racquet? Would you be allowed to carry the ball to the net and let it drop in for a winner?
You can’t do this in matches. Double hits that are inadvertent and one continuous swing are allowed. Catching the ball is not.
Wait.. is this perkiomen valley high school by any chance?
Yes it is… I film there all the time. :)
@@2MinuteTennis No way. I knew something looked familiar. That’s my high school didn’t know you were in the collegeville area. I played first doubles on court 4 where you’re on
Canceled my Moratoglou academy reservation after seeing this video!
Haha. Sorry to inconvenience you. Hahah
Weird thing I noticed- you split stepped before each one. It’s like that split step thing might be important
The split step is so ingrained that there’s no way for me not to do it.
Imagine practicing this so much that in your next match you catch the ball instead of hitting a volley.... yeah that just happened 🤣
Sounds like you've mastered it. 😂
@@krisztinakobanyai yes ofcourse. I master everything I try to learn. Don't they teach that In Hungary? 😀
@@allboutthemojo Probably not, things are better since I've been living in the UK, including learning to play tennis 😆 It's not about what they teaching, it's about what you're committing to. ✌️
@@krisztinakobanyai more tennis, less Google philosophy also helps 🤣
@@allboutthemojo Not sure what you mean by google philosophy and what you're trying to imply here, but you just commented under a CZcams video which is also a search engine. 🤔
I may lose my next match 0-6, 0-6 but damn I'll look slick when I do!
Imagine being a tennis coach and having a student pay for a whole hour just to learn this.
Haha I’ve had that happen. They got good at it too. Lol
Anyone else feel like his alter ego is a high school physics teacher? 🤔
Haha if I didn’t choose to teach tennis I would’ve loved to be a school science teacher. Thanks so much!!!
You would be a good jai-alai player. It's the same way they catch the pelota
Thanks for saying that. Never played but looks fun!
O No! You didn't bent your knees. 😀
Nice trick! Not sure how this is helpful though. Do you have any advise on how to handle an opponent who is being an insulting jerk on the court? My instinct is to quit the match and tell him I’m not playing him. But if I do this, he gets the win, and there is nothing to convince him to change his behavior. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! As for the opponent, it all comes down to understanding that he’s doing it intentionally to annoy you. Since you don’t want to forfeit, play the match doing everything you can do ignore the opponent. After the match, you have to tell the player that their behavior isn’t appropriate. If in a tournament, let the officials know so they can be on the lookout for the next time. If a casual match, stop playing with them all together.
@@2MinuteTennis Great advice. Thank you. Sorry to hijack the thread. As for me, it's really difficult for me to play well when someone has gotten under my skin. Something to work on.
@@bradleygroce8975 any pro who played john McEnroe or nick Kyrgios knows how you feel. Since we can’t control our opponent, then we have to control our we react to them
Add about 10 lbs of lead to your racket, then allow it to slip once or twice. Just kidding--kinda'. I agree with Ryan's reply...
ah so you got the wrist watch part
Yes. It’s pretty much essential.
with all due respect, this guy may know how to analyze any pro player or college player's game but if you follow his instructions word for the word's its gonna hurt your game because it messes with your head, you need to take instructions very vaguely in order to get the most out of it
What is the practical benefit of being able to do this?
Any advanced racket skill gives you the ability to control the racket and ball better. If you saw someone do this you’d assume they were good at tennis. That’s bc in order to do this you must have great racket control. Learning to do this will improve your touch and feel of the ball, especially at net.
@@2MinuteTennis okay thanks for the response. Will try this
After a million years of playing tennis , try as I might, I STILL can’t pick up the ball by hitting the racket on top of the ball and getting it to bounce up. I have to resort to picking the ball up against the side my foot using the racket or at worst picking the ball up with my hand. No cool factor.
Anne someone else asked that so I’ll gladly make that video this week. Thanks!!!
@@2MinuteTennis Yay!!
smack the ball with the sweetspot, and at contact with the ball the racquet should be parallel with the ground.
I find it easier to smack ball a few inches above sweetspot, toward the top of the frame. Also choking up helps. Key is timing the second smack down, give the ball some time to get up
@@jayrussell26 I think that’s my problem. I mess up the timing the second smack down and the ball and my racket just die on the court. This is so funny to analyze…
I tried this in my garden and put the neighbours windows through . I need more practice
