0:17 Tarobei was an honest and hard worker.
0:26 Jirobei was greedy and lazy, and had a big bump on his right cheek.
0:33 Tarobei went to the mountains every day to make firewood.

The "birdpeople" are in fact devils, and they are familiarized to the surreal and magic, that's why is not impressive for them.

It is said that the model is probably the Jews who arrived in Japan hundreds of years ago.

The stick dance is amazing, but even the people who are watching it are in danger.
I'm sick of the selfish old man who is dancing without worrying about that.
A treasure that you would get if you danced well.
He stole and ran away because he thought he couldn't get it anymore.

add to that, snow white heavily relied on rotoscoping despite having a huge budget.
not only does the animation here appear to be completely original, the drawings are more richly detailed with crisp high-contrast shadows that disney didn't perfect until later.
when this was made, most of the animation world was still stuck on cheap rubber-hose animation techniques when these guys managed to portray semi-realistic human anatomy in motion _before_ disney made it popular.

thanks for that perspective, i just watched this and two worlds and, as an animator myself, what I'm amazed by is the sublime cinematography with limited means, the long story arc and the sombre, serious tone. My knowledge of animation history of that era is a jumbled mess so i don't know how right am i in my vague perception that animation elsewhere at the moment was just dancing skeletons, sure much more lavishly animated but with more of an emphasis on quick thrills, while this feels more like a full length narration, more like a real movie than many movies in the cinema today

It's like an old Hungarian joke. Goes like this:
"Hunchback was walking down the forest when he met the Devil. The Devil asked him
    -What's on yer back?
    -Ah, a hunch.
    -Wher'd you get it?
    -Was born this way.
    -You like it?
    -Not very much.
-Here let me take it away form you.
And he takes the hunch from the hunchback. The guy straightens up "bloody hell, thats so good". He starts running out of the forest, meets with a cripple.
    The cripple asks him:
    -Aint you were a hunchback.
-I was, but this bloke in the middle of the forest cured me.
Cripple starts running as fast as his gimpy legs can. He too meets the Devil. The Devil asks:
    -Whats whit yer leg?
    -It's crippled
    -Wher'd you get it?
    -Was born this way.
    -You got a hunch?
    -No.
    -Then here you go."

Once he heard about how the Tengu took the lump out of the humble wood chopper. He thought he can pretend to be him and do the same dance in hope that the Tengu would remove the lump on his cheek. Only he failed and angered the Tengu so they gave him the lump of the mild wood chopper on his left cheek.

Which is still more than China ever did btw,... Japan and india and epanywhere else over China anyyday
