  • We've done a lot of work in the garden this year - from Hügelkultur raised beds to dig vs. no-dig potatoes and a huge expansion to add space for growing corn, sweet potatoes, asparagus and a whole host of squash and pumpkin.
Join us on a bright and sunny morning in the interior of central Portugal (growing zone 10a) for a look at what's growing well, what's growing less well and what's taking over the garden!
    club.makedogrow.com
And thank you to one of our lovely club members, Ana, for providing the following translation of the conversation with our neighbour:
Me: Good morning, how are you?
Neighbour: We're getting there, what about you?
Me: would you like more courgette's?
Neighbour: Enough, there are only Two of us
Me: More? Would you like more?
Neighbour: No thank you, we're only two and we don't eat that much, but thank you anyway...
Neighbour: [talking about the potato harvest] They are very small, last year they were big, this year they are tiny. But my friend, it's all there is round here, and that's the best we can get. That's it. Thank You!
    I guess they're not a fan of courgettes! 🤦‍♂️

The funny neighbor said "Somos só dois a comer / somos poucos" = "we're just two eating" (meaning, that's more than enough for them two) and then a classical pt moment were our elders will go and say how small their agriculture products are this year (no matter how big they are, they will always say they're smaller than the previous year). But let me say, I was super impressed with your pt 🚀

I obviously have a way to go with my Portuguese. I thought he added jokingly that the two of them are skinny (so two courgettes are quite enough for them),which seemed to insinuate 'unlike you two' , and then said courgettes gave him the sh#ts. But now I know better ...🥴

That culture of sharing home grown produce between neighbors is very common in the interior of the country. It's like you said - some people have more of one item, others have more of another, so they share it so that as little as possible goes to waste.

Carrots seedlings ara painful. An old method i learned from my father is to cover with a wood plank and check regularly. The plank will ensure good contact between seeds and soil while maintains moisture well uniform. It's very simple and effective. One you start to see the germination, remove the plank and continue as normal.

You have a very good portuguese accent, congrats! The portuguese farmer has a very thick accent, it should be particularly difficult for non-natives. So, here's some translation from 40:13 on: the portuguese farmer said "enough, we're just two eating [it]" (chega, somos só dois a comer). Then he repeated it. And then he said "we are few" (somos poucos). At 40:25 he said "this year they're not good" (este ano estão fracas). Then he said "last year they were large, this year they're small" (o ano passado estavam grandes, este ano estão miúdas). Then he said "but, my friend, that's what we have" (mas meu amigo é o que cá há). Then he said "there's nothing better" (não há melhor).

The weed beside the corn is a variety of Crab grass. Keep pulling it out or it will take over. At least it is easy to pull as it has a central fibrous root system. The easiest way is to lift all the leaves around the roots & pull the entire plant out. You shouldn't have to dig around it unless the ground is as hard as a rock.

I'd love to see how you make your cordials, especially the cucumber one :) Roots and Refuge Farm channel has some good tutorials on getting carrots to germinate easily if you want to try again next year. She puts a wooden board over the sowed line to keep the moisture in. I love fresh carrot tops so I like to grow at least a few. I added Celeriac to my garden this year (root celery) and am super excited seeing them grow - though not nearly as well as everything you guys are doing this year. We haven't had much rain in Germany either and I used cheap compost. Lesson learned (hopefully). Stay hydrated!!! :)

One cultural note. "Siesta" isn’t really much of thing in Portugal (except maybe in some towns in Alentejo)... People not being outside doesn’t mean their having a regular nap, most of them will probably just be doing chores inside or just sitting for a while, and if they are old maybe rest when they feel tired. In many small rural villages you would probably see older folk just sitting right next outside their door under a shade talking with their neighbours.

Amazing garden! Not sure if you thought about it or not, but be careful with planting bell or sweet pepper next to other hot peppers and chillies :) they can interbreed because of the pollinators. I made that mistake once and only found out there was a mistake to be made when I prepared a stuffed bell pepper that removed the roof of my mouth it was so spicy hahahahaha

  • @Bobrogers99
    @Bobrogers99 Před 2 lety +7

Such an impressive garden! It thrived in part because of the large amount of compost you used to enrich the soil, you provided sufficient water, and the third major component was your hard work! Although you did research as needed, you started with a solid knowledge base and you experimented to learn more. As you refine your preservation/storage techniques you will become just about self-sufficient (though indulging yourselves occasionally for little store-bought extras). The long growing season there allows harvesting of some fresh food year-round.
Anyone who sees your success and thinks they can just buy a plot of land and live off it should watch your videos from the beginning and understand that it's not that easy!

In portuguese we have the words "jardim" and "horta". "Jardim" is more a kind of flower and grass garden, for leisure purposes, and "horta" is a vegetable garden, like yours.

As for your chickens, I've learned all chickens seem to have an odd trait. If you just put the food in with them, they will ignore it, but if you hang on the fence, the trees, their coop, as well as stake other veggies up so the little buggers can feel like they are really having to rummage for their treats in a tiny forest of goodies, they will eat all the stuff. Placing some just out of reach will make them jump for it. Chickens all seem to appreciate the work it takes to get the goodies in life. I hope that works for you because they are missing out on so many good things. Chickens, huh? 😁

All the best from Brisbane Australia ❤️❤️

Also guys with your pumpkins and squash pick when ripe or leave in the vine but put some hay or straw underneath them. We had a huge grey pumpkin that we left at our back door for about 5 years and when I made pumpkin and bacon soup it had the most beautiful flavor and very dry inside. You could grow all your pumpkins, marrow water melon on your rubble pile. Free space and then you can use your garden for other veg. My dad used to grow pumpkin and melons on an old compost pile. ❤️❤️❤️

Hot peppers can be pickled. They are great in tuna sandwich, salmon paddies.
To make them crunchy, presoak the sliced round hot peppers in sugar solution sweet to your taste, just cover to the top (I used stevia/swerve powder solution) for 3-4 days in refrigerator. Put in a jar and fill it up with sourkraut left over liquid. Love them. Typical Asian condiment.

Amazing garden! One word though…relocate your Lemon Balm to an area by itself; it is highly invasive and will grow large, bush-like plants and it spreads by the roots. I’m in Canada, and this has been my sorry experience, as it now appears all over the back garden (and it is certainly much cooler where we are). It’s a very valuable herb in cooking, makes a wonderful tea, and the birds love it, but my advice: grow it in large pots.

I used paper used coffee filters spread over sewn carrot seeds. They worked out quite well, finally have carrots growing.
Cucumber varieties should be harvested asap, as the plants will quit producing if any possible viable seeds form. Same for peppers, although not quite as urgent. I have Paprik peppers growing, they're slow, but hopefully I get a few peppers to dry and powder for paprika.

Just in case you are interested in trying to grow some carrots in quantity, you might want to check out the Quebec Homesteads channel of their germinating carrots in a cornstarch slurry. An addition to their technique would be to put a strip of plastic the length of the row to keep more of the moisture in. We actually used this technique on our family farm. Happy planting!

I sympathize with Guy on the insect bites/stings, I too have been afflicted for many years with swollen limbs from this problem. I’m sorry to say-as I get older the swelling gets worse 🐝. Great veggie garden ,well done. I’m re thinking mine for future years. More patio pots and raised planters for, toms, peppers, cucumber, nearer to the water and sunnier. And vine crops into the raised beds with drip irrigation so fewer trips into the foliage and bugs 🙄😍😎🇫🇷

Those "missed that one" oversized zucchinis are great to slice lengthwise and use as "pizza dough" - hollow out a bit, fill them with sauce, meat/veg, top with cheese and bake. Delish!

I was told by a very experienced Gardener that the carrots do not like Rocky soil at all. So if they’re deformed they’re hitting pebbles or rocks and growing around them I was told the plant them and Sandy soil. if you poke a hole with say an obelisk shape stick , making a hole for the sandy soil that shape it’ll grow to the shape. Like the channel thanks very much bye

My goodness, what a huge and diversified garden you have created. There must be a ton of off camera work that is going on to expand and maintain it! Awesome job as usual. Really professional quality videos too.

I have seen gardeners place a board or even chunks of bark over where they planted carrots to hold in moisture while they germinate. I also saw a neat trick where you mix carrot seeds, water and cornstarch in a ziplock-type bag, cut the corner and spread it like icing down the rows. It helps separate the seeds to reduce the need to thin them (Quebec Homestead, I believe). I intend to try both for this autumn's carrot sowing. I love my hugelculture raised beds. So happy you are having great success with your garden! :D

Great video, beautiful garden, healthy fruits. The idea with getting up really early in the morning - like six-ish- and having siesta during the high temperatures in the day is excellent!!!

In South Africa we call the orange Melon with rough skin (Sweet Melon), the green melon with creamy skin(Winter melon). And obviously the much loved Watermelon

Try the three Sisters method growing corn, with peas and squash, the squash suppresses weeds, peas provide nitrogen.
Edit: another vote for a cordial vid☺️

One thing I've learned from others here on CZcams about asparagus, is that they tend to take over your beds. A couple places that I researched said that you need to put them in a designated bed, so that they don't take over everything else you have. One person put them in a designated raised bed, and once you plant them, you don't ever have to do it again. They come back yearly without much fuss. :) Love your garden! thanks for sharing it with us! :)

Not sure what kind of experience you have in gardening, but this is truly amazing. I grew up in the country and a vegetable garden is a lot of work as well as the canning or freezing. As you go along you’ll come to know you can plant less of some things and a lot more of others. I know for my family we could not plant too much of any kind of potato. Seriously enjoying all content of this channel. Keep it up. 😘

Thanks for the tour of your vegetable garden. Your hard work has certainly paid off. I would love you to do a video on making cordial. Also, maybe in the future a video about herbs and making herb tea with fresh herbs. I love a cup of herb tea each day but only ever have that which i purchase from the supermarket. Just a suggestion you could try growing your pumpkins etc on a piece of ground that you have not yet developed, then you can just let them go wild,
