Is this in your basement or a separate building? After I saw the big space heater, I thought it might be a separate building because I'd never seen a service garage heater in a basement.
I am 70+ years young and I was a Torpedo repairman while in the U.S. Navy in the 60's, 70's and 80's. We used to tear down and reassemble the "fish" in total darkness and under water and even while travelling beneath the waves of a hurricane. Because the lives of the whole crew may depend on whether or not you could do your job under all circumstances and trials. Having a well equipped station to repair is utmost. Space is a premium that is to be cherished. I love that you are never satisfied and that you are always looking for a better solution to facilitate your repairs, dissections and inventions. Keep up the good work you so enjoy!

I’d love a history of Mr Carlson. How he started, what he did for work and schooling, up to this point. Also would love a tour of Mr Carlson’s mansion.

At first I watched Mr Carlson because of the relaxing tone and satisfying electronic repairs. But after watching for a few years I find myself able to do some simple electronics almost by osmosis. Now my goal is to setup a small electronics bench for myself where I can maintain and service my own electronic musical equipment. At which point I will definitely be joining the patreon to take advantage of the amazing test equipment inventions. Thanks for the entertainment and enthusiasm, Mr Carlson!
That is cool. It's fun to set up a repair bench. I am 80 and have always had a bench.
This sounds a bit like me! unfortunately age seems to be preventing the osmosis!
I wonder what this guy did in his working life to enable the acquisition of all this gear and the nice place to put it to use. And to have the time to produce such wonderful videos for all of us is also something few can carry out. I commend Mr Carlson’s Lab for his contributions to the community.

I'm totally speechless at the amount of work you have accomplished with the new shop in a rather short space of time.
When finished I bet it will be easy peasy to make high quality CZcams videos. Hopefully the learning never ends.
Here is a guess from an old audio hobbyist. I don't think your echo is so much due to still missing shelf fillers. From the view it looks like the main echo would happen between the ceiling and the floor. Assuming you don't want a big floor mat, you could try to do some padding on the ceiling. I happen to have experience about some excellent material that we used at the campus "studio". That cost essentially nothing and was meeting all our needs. Talking about egg crates. At that time the common egg crates were for 4 by 5 eggs, or even bigger. Anyway, the base and the mirroring lid worked marvels, when glued to the brick wall, or actually on top of the flat, painted plaster. 😊😊
Actual egg crates are a horrible fire hazard and don't work all well. They diffuse high frequencies but don't absorb much. There are plenty of companies that make far better acoustic absorption materials that have fire ratings.
@@hubbsllc Few companies, however, make absorption materials for free. I applaud the use of materials that would otherwise go into the trash so long as they don't end up making your place look "trashy". Perhaps there's an inexpensive spray-on liquid that could help lessen the fire hazard posed by egg-cartons?

My bench was 24 feet long by 4 feet deep for the same reasons as expressed in your video. I wanted some workspace left after I installed all the test equipment.
I also had a 2 foot by 24 foot shelf for more equipment, but was not smart enough to angle the equipment down in my direction to see their front panels without glare as you did....
At 77 years old I think I have lost about 1/2 of my original IQ, 90% of my hearing, 50% of my sight, 80% of my muscle mass, and about 50% of my manual dexterity.
So these days I pretty much only live vicariously through watching your videos.
Without you, (and Uncle Doug who also works on old tube equipment and old cars), I would no longer have any use for the internet!
I am very glad to see you expanding because Doug is getting old like me and starting to slow down too....
Please keep up the great work so us old techs can relive the best parts of our lives through watching your videos!

Incredible new space! Is this at home or a commercial space?
Just wanted to say thank you for your channel and videos. I found your channel while trying to self-teach electronics repair, and even though I'm more interested in modern tech, your channel helped me to get to grips with the basics very quickly and really supplemented my understanding. I also have a new appreciation for old radio receivers! I never knew they would be so interesting.
You don't need to worry about the wireless, i can't really detect noticable echo, although when you have things sorted I suspect it will sound "tighter". It will be so much better for you to have more space, and more flexible space too. Looking forward to the new content thats coming up! It really pleases me that you're restoring all this older equipment, its so easy for such a big part of history to deteriorate to the point its unrecoverable, and then part of history is lost forever.
Nice to hear from you Professor Carlson and thank you for your updates. I really like your new lab setup and all the gear you have, awesome !! I notice your chairs are all ergonomically correct as well while you work at the bench, sure keeps the lower back discomfort level at a minimum. Look forward to your up-and-coming videos.

My good friend N7RCA converts old broadcast transmitters into the ham bands as well. I always wanted an old transmitter myself. Have had a love for radio stations my whole life and when I hear others share the same for the equipment it always makes me happy.

Thanks for the update! I think you'll find the lav mic more immune to room noise than the large diaphragm studio mic. Couple that with the awful lossy audio codec used by CZcams and even more background echo and room reverb is lost. Then there's the typical lo-fi sound bars/computer speakers many of us use to watch these videos, which tend to lose still more background noise. (I keep the fancy soffit-mounted studio monitors in the audio post room. I don't watch vids in there!) Finally, for spoken word, a 12 to 24 dB/octave high-pass going as high as 120-150 hz can remove a lot of "acoustic sin" from the space and punch up intelligibility. (I've been a location and studio recording engineer for 55 years. Your audio is fine for the intended purpose. :) )

Congrats with the new workspace, it looks really good. You even have enough space for a workbench with wheels for even larger projects. The only thing that I can say about the audio quality is that I can hear you very well, and that is good enough for me. Your collection is truly amazing. Museum quality and quantity. The summer of 1968 I took a class from Spokane Community College in basic electronics in preparation for going into the Navy and Submarines. We used Tektronix 502 scopes and that same scope was the standard used in the Navy on our missiles and support equipment.

At my first job out of engineering school we had several of those big old Tectronics oscilloscopes in the lab. On cold winter morning they got turned on first thing to help warm the place up.🙂
Pro-level doesn't even begin to describe all this. 😎 I'd be jealous if I knew what more than a handful of these instruments do.

It looks fantastic. BTW It didn't seem like a long time to me. I know that when we see a 2 or 3 hour restoration video it's actually many many days of long work going on, even before the editing and posting. So again, thanks for all you do.

Neato! I"m really excited about the new lab! Can't wait for the restoration videos. When I saw that tektronix scope collection, I could only think that you single handedly saved a whole electronics era from getting into a scrapyard.
I am a ham and have enjoyed electronics design and prototyping for over 50 years. But I had just a dual band lab quality scope and a small portable one and all of the necessary rf and audio generators, variacs and some that I designed. But NOTHING close to the collection of scopes and inventory that you have amassed! Amazing! Great videos. I am in a retirement home now and enjoy watching your latest adventures under the chassis.

Looks like a great Lab space... 16' WOW... that's incredible. I've recently had my backyard torn out and new landscaping and a shed that I'm going to use as a mini electronics workspace, old 80's Commodore computer setup, and electronics storage... and that is probably 0.001 of a taste of what it must be like in your space... But it feels great when it's done! I look forward to seeing new videos in the new lab.

After seeing your scope collection, I'm never gonna take any guff from my friends for owning 12 guitars and 4 amps. LOL. I would be curious to know how much is turned on at any given time and how much draw you wired it for. You also did a great job providing even, white lighting, which simplifies videography and is much nicer to work in for extended periods.
You must have a fantastic relationship with your wife to have all that equipment in your house. The new lab looks great and I can't wait for the repair videos! Keep up the awesome work!
My wife would be delighted if my lair, er, “lab” was half as neat and orderly as Paul’s. He is one-of-a-kind, and gives the rest of us (or me, at least) something to strive for. Can’t wait to see the new lab in action!

Long form vacuum tube restorations at Mr. Carlson's Lab are one of the highlights of my very boring life so the recent drought has been somewhat distressing to me, but I hope the drought will soon be over and the videos will start flowing once again in spades!
Try electronics old and new with M. Caldeira for European tube radio restoration. Bandersen TV for U.S. TV restoration. Quite a few other channels, like buzz1151.

Given that the floor is a hard surface (not carpeted - which is good. Carpet in a lab is a bad idea), and the ceiling appears to be drywall, I would strongly consider putting some acoustic absorption on the ceiling. Lots of readily available options that use the ideal Corning 702 and 703 fiberglass panels (which is what you want for this). If you hang around corporate surplus places on any regular basis, you can usually pick these up for free - they're very commonly installed in offices. I suspect that will help with some of the echo issues. This channel has always had pretty darn good audio quality - I'd hate for that to change.

Hi Paul its great to hear from you. Wow just as I thought you had moved to a new lab in the garage you surprise us by moving again. Have you now moved away from the home to a commercial property. If so I hope you can still make use of that triple antenna of yours at home as that was a lot of work to build. On a different subject I recently watched the video of yours called "Ice Storm Destruction" which was amazing. For those of is who do not get to see much of the white stuff, it would be great to see a short video from you showing the Canadian winter again sometime. WHAT A NEAT LOOKING LAB. Looking forward to step-by-step resto of the BC348 receiver since I own one but have never plugged it in due to the vast number of paper & foil caps. Don't want to see the magic smoke.

How did you acquire all that test equipment? number two> And is there a Mrs. Carlson, and what does she think about your electronic repair shops? And finally, Do you have a Day JOB? That supports your repair shops? I asked these questions because you are so equipped and efficient in what you do on your You Tube channel. You blow me away every time I watch your teaching videos. Back in the day, when I was in high school and attending a trade school in electronics, my teacher was quite boring, I must say, sorry to say so, but, you make it sound so easy that catches my attention. Thank you for your willingness, to share with us, your electronic repair skills. I am so grateful to sit and watch you teach us how to repair basic electronic equipment. Amazing work, Paul! I started my own lab and vintage equipment collection around 2007, but things really took off about the same time I started following your channel in 2016. I'm now at a point where I have most of what I *need* in order to tackle a good range of projects. Humorously though, that means that I'm about where you were *before* you started your CZcams channel. And now you're orders of magnitude beyond that! LOL! I particularly love your Tektronix collection! WOW! I have 20+ Tek oscilloscopes plus other Tek gear in my "official" collection, plus about the same number of Tek instruments waiting for me to triage, but seeing your Tek collection just floored me! Fantastic!

Hello Mr Carlson, Subscribed last year . . PLEASE take care of yourself & get your rest, this planet NEEDS you . . . Some years back, my Uncle Paul passed away & I was on the receiving end of most of his old electronic stuff . . . A Morse code machine with practice records, a Triumph - Model 830 scope - works, needs work, wire recorders, one Silvertone console upright & a tabletop, both complete with microphones & wire, I know they " used to work " many years back . . . You ARE the Most organized hoarder I have ever seen . . . If you would like a video of all this stuff, there IS alot more, let me know, it will take me awhile to get things together in order to do that, I need both knees replace along with a short laudry list of other unnecessary pains . . . .
