Payton's touchdown run in this game shows that, even at age 32 (and before you say anything, it's been conclusively documented that his birth certificate shows his date of birth to be July 25th _1953_ , NOT 1954 as was commonly reported in error], when he was fully healthy, he still had _very good_ speed. As that season in 1985 wore on, Walter played with two pretty serious injuries [and played with both injuries at the same time] that he and the Bears played down and kept very quiet: a badly bruised and swollen right elbow [he couldn't use that elbow to stiff-arm for the rest of the season], and bruised ribs that were first sustained in wk10 vs Detroit]. The bruised ribs kept getting worse as the regular season wore on, and it slowed Walter down considerably. The way to see the difference is in three plays. 1st, watch this 27-yard td run in this wk9 game, then watch his 34 yard run in the early 4th quarter against Dallas in wk11 [the one where Fuller was still in the game, not the later one when Tomczak was playing], and then watch his 65 yard catch and run in wk15 at the NY Jets. In wk9, he had that fantastic burst of quickness _and_ good speed, but by wk11 and then _especially_ wk15 he just couldn't accelerate very well and his top speed was noticeably slower because of those ribs . . . if you compare those plays you'll clearly see that he was _at least_ a step and a half, maybe even two steps slower from wk9. After the last regular season game at Detroit, he was able to rest and recover _somewhat_ , but the ribs never healed fully until after the season.
Playing as well as he did in 1985 [his last season with over 2000 yards from scrimmage] with those two injuries [which would've sidelined most anyone else] and at _age 32_ is just amazing.
