Naval Port of Karlskrona - UNESCO World Heritage Site

- The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Naval Port of Karlskrona is a Renaissance-era naval base in southern Sweden. It was built to provide year-round control of the Baltic sea by Swedish warships, as the existing base in Stockholm tended to ice over winter! There's some interesting history and beautiful architecture here - more than you'd expect from a still-active naval base! Let's check it out.

Hey Joel, you must amassing quite the library of world heritage sites. We're in sweaty, rainy Vietnam right now and there's nothing we'd love more than to be in beautiful temperate Southern Sweden!! Love those cute homes at the end.
They're great, aren't they! Ironically sometimes here in Europe I'm longing for somewhere remote and exotic! And yep our library is huge now, we just visited site #350 last week, though the channel is about two months behind.
What a well fortified port. Impressive. I would never have known about this UNESCO site if you hadn't taken us there.
Yeah I wouldn't say it's particularly well known, even amongst Swedes! Unless they've been in the Navy of course ;)

Haha thanks mate! It's a lot of fun, though I'll admit that 24/7 nomad life can be quite tough sometimes. But I try to make the most of it - not everyone has this opportunity!

I've never seen something like, and will certainly make a visit to Sweden and check this site. What's also good is it's my first to know about this as one of the UNESCO heritage. very informative vide0

love the colorful buildings! never knew that Sweden was once a European power and had such an impressive navy (and still does)
I never really knew either, though I'd seen references to it elsewhere. It didn't last that long though, until the usual Great Powers had recovered from the Thirty Years War. In modern times, Sweden has invested heavily in submarines for defence - they were (and still are) very nervous about possible Russian encroachment.

Funnily enough, it was actually both on this day! It was crazy rain in the morning so we had a long lunch and then it was perfect in the afternoon 😂
Looks like a really attractive and interesting place to visit. The dockworkers huts remind me of the ones we saw in Copenhagen, but I think these look much better preserved. Yes, I don't think you'd be able to get navy ships out of Stockholm very easily. It's a tricky run for the cruise ships!
I think naval ships of that era were probably a little smaller! And I don't think the Stockholm naval base was right in the city either, it was probably a different part of the archipelago with better sea access.
We must make a trip to Sweden, I did visit once a long time ago when I was very young so can't really remember it. Their navy may not be as big as it once was, that dominant role has been taken over by IKEA. If we catch up with you on your travels, we'll have to test you on your UNESCO knowledge.
Sweden is great and you should definitely make the trip! It was probably our favourite of the four Nordic countries and it wasn't as expensive as we feared (for clarity - it's not "cheap"!). You should both come to TBEX one day :)

It's expensive, but actually not as bad as we expected. Sweden we generally found cheaper than Norway and Denmark, and often has cheap food options (eg IKEA restaurant!) that the other two don't have at all. But we stayed in tents rather than hotels to save money - something a bit different!
