  • Both single trunk trees and multi trunk trees can have specific uses in the landscape. Although it's somewhat subjective, there are some basic principles and guidelines to follow when selecting either single trunk or multi trunk trees. Single trunk trees are often taller at the nursery because the root system only has one stem to send nutrients to, vs a multi trunk where there is multiple stems and often a much larger canopy with more foliage, creating a slower growth. Multi trunk trees also have the ability to provide screening and privacy a bit better because there is usually a larger canopy and foliage that may start lower to the ground. There's also a term called 'low branching' that refers to trees in where the branches start lower to the ground, also making it ideal for screening and creating wind breaks.
For shade, single trunk tend to provide a bit more shade for seating below as you are able to fit tables.chairs close to the base of the tree. Multi trunks tend to eat up more space with angled trunks emerging from the base.
When it comes to placement, single trunk trees are generally able to fit in tighter spots due to a more slim profile. In this video, I do a quick sketch to better explain how a multi vs a single trunk tree can affect a space and which one may be the best selection for your specific needs.
When it comes to beauty, the multi trunk tree generally has my vote in most situations. Each one has a unique branching structure adding to the aesthetics of the tree. Especially when lit up at night!
Ultimately, it depends on design and what you need the tree to do for your landscape. I hope this video has been helpful in getting you to think a bit more about what form of tree will work best for you
See you on the next one, and happy planting!

the obvious three dimensionality of multitrunkular trees takes them to another level esthetically as you slowly walk around them and pause at each 3d configuration you feel you are looking at an incredible sculpture of genius creativity thank you so much for your wonderful explanations of unitrunkular versus multitrunkular trees. there is a magnolia tree near my home that always takes my breath away with its seemingly flawless configurations and proportions most people walk right past it unaware of the many splendored wonder only yards away

I love the look of the wooden nursery planters. They look like they're over 15 gallon size? Is there a video showing how to make them?? Another thing you should mention about the multi trunk is they might be more prone to splitting during high wind eventi, not as strong as single stem thats staked.its tricker to stake a multi trunk. I had a bunch of beautiful limelights that all fell over due to very strong winds we had two weeks ago. Lots of trees down in area and debri everywhere. Great video!.

Hey Randy, thank you very much for watching! The nursery boxes are actually purchased from specialty companies that prefabricate everything and then we just strap them together with metal ties at the nursery. The most common sizes are 24 and 36 inch. and you are definitely correct about the strength of a single trunk versus a multi trunk. branches have definitely been known to split off single trunks. appreciate the input!

Hi this is question is probably out of topic but I have podocarpuses (blue ice) that doesn’t seem to grow tall, should I trim it to stimulate growth? Not sure why to do. Thanks!

Does forest pansy redbud come in multi truck?

Absolutely! These actually are generally multi-trunk by nature.
