I have been to the Phillipines four times since 1979! My son and I just returned from three wonderful weeks in Manila, Bulacan, CDO, Marinduque and Davao. I have a goal of retiring there within two years. I am not sure which location I want to pursue. The Filipinos are wonderful, warm, hospital people and their respect in their culture is so outstanding! Very good information! Salamat!

Useful information about taxes, particularly as Thailand is ‘muttering’ about starting them on Expat’s incomes!

just to be clear though what they mean to say is that there is no extra tax to pay on overseas pensions and overseas earning but you still pay exactly the same tax as if you had stayed overseas and not retired in the philippines - its not tax free at all ! - and as for the so called tax break on bringing $7k of your own possessions into the country to live !!!!! hahaha funny - taxing someones second hand possessions as they entered the country to live would be the most bazaar thing to do 😅

I just returned to America from a 6-week visit to the Philippines, in Sep-Oct 2023. My plan was to retire in the Philippines, that is why I stayed there for 6 weeks. After what I have seen in the Philippines, I am NO longer so sure about retiring there. Here is a short summary why:
    1) In the United States, the greater majority of dog-owners "scoop the poop" of their dogs when those dogs defecate on the streets. In the Philippines it is the OPPOSITE. Most Filipinos do NOT "scoop the poop" of their dogs on the streets in Metro-Manila. I had to clean the soles of my shoes 3-4 times a week, because many of the streets were littered with dog feces.
    2) Many of the streets in Pasay City were narrow and had NO sidewalk. I was at the mercy of being side-swiped by passing cars and motorcycles, while I tried to avoid the dog feces on the narrow streets.
    3) The air pollution in Baguio City and Metro-Manila hit my lungs hard. I developed a cough, while my lungs tried to detoxify from the air pollution.
    4) Widespread business fraud, inefficiency and incompetence, in Baguio City and Metro-Manila.
    5) Searing heat from the weather. I was wearing shorts and short-sleeves to cope with the heat in Metro-Manila. Still the level of heat was often punishing.

If your wife is Filipina, you can bring your ENTIRE household with no additional fees. Forget the $7,000. She is the one moving, not you. Instead of the SRRV, get the 13a visa, your wife dual citizenship . You can own as much property as you want instead of 1000 sqm limit. A lot cheaper too for the visa.

I will be retiring to the PI in January. There are many digital nomads like myself. You say the internet connections are strong. Dependable wifi and electricity are important. Is this only the case in certain areas of the country, like the big cities?

Crime rate? My daughter had a traumatic experience with celphone snatcher inside a passenger jeepney. She fought with the snatcher while other passengers just look on, even the jeepney driver did nothing. Eventually, she lost her celphone! And know what? The passengers advised her, “don’t fight with snatcher, just give them what they want”… Pinoy mentality? She reported the incident to the barangay but nothing… the kapitan Dodie Plata said, these might be the snatchers from Calaanan Area (Monumento). My daughter was extremely terrified & decided to just go back to CA to continue her studies. Because she witnessed also a lot of necklace-snatching, pickpockets, cellphone grabbing, days while waiting for her flight back home. I know, crime is everywhere but I can say, it’s more & horrendous in the Philippines…

The Philippines should change its constitution, remove the 60/40 protective policy, and apply 100% foreigner ownership of all large-scale businesses. We should start atttacting corporate ex-pats and serious large-scale investors. Otherwise we will just become a haven of lazy Westoid anarchists and anarcho-communists retirees who don't know any other livelihood but vlog, Pinoy-bait, and beg.
