Chinese has a saying, 雪上加霜 (xue shang jia shuang), which means "adding frost on top of the snow." In English that would be "adding insult to injury." So with alcohol, the "injury" is destroyed health, while the added "insult" is destroyed finances. (Of course, alcohol also destroys so much more, including families, relationships, careers, etc.) Still, thanks for pointing out one of the major "insults" of alcohol: crippled finances due to medical bills. Somewhere in there, the cost of the booze itself over the years should also be added in. In any case, thanks for discussing another huge reason to avoid alcohol-the ball and chain of debt. Your message is obviously resonating with lots of people . . . Huge congratulations on passing 8k in subscribers!! And the last 1,000 came so quickly! My doc disturbed my pancreas by trying to get a gallstone that moved into my duct. Pancreatitis was the result. 1 week in the hospital - WORST pain I have ever had. Dilaudid every 2 hours still didn’t help the pain. Then I started seeing things and had hallucinations. It was horrible. Would not wish that on my worst enemy. (Well, maybe some 😮). Can’t imagine it recurring.
Stay strong and keep doing what you are doing.
Bless your heart for having gone through this. I had gallbladder removed six weeks ago and I’m having serious trouble now. It’s extremely painful. Take good care of you and thank you for sharing this. It lets me know that someone has been through it and lived to tell. 😊 Most people have no idea how painful it is.🙏💞

In UK we call it Alcohol Miss use and that was one of the named factors on my husbands death certificate. All that you have said on your vide o helps me understand what the addiction is like. Sadly he had all the side affects you describe but never complained to me just said not feeling good today. For those trying to stop please don’t hurt yourselves anymore. If LD can quite when he was rock bottom, so can you! Please try to look after yourself.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with these health issues and bills. It is so costly having AUD and its related illnesses. The alcohol itself is expensive and a waste of money, so just imagine being in and out of the hospital because you're so sick! I've spent tons of money on Dr. bills before finally getting diagnosed with pancreatitis, and yes pancreatitis really sucks!! I I have no where near the problems you've had, but my medical issues still cost me a fortune (thousands of dollars even after insurance)! Thanks for sharing this info, LD. You are a strong and courageous person for continuing to fight these ongoing problems, and I'm proud of you for that! Some people would have given up if they were in your shoes. Your breakdown of costs should be eye opening to everyone. Unfortunately very few of us will hear it, and even fewer, will let it sink in. You and I both know your story is the same for many of millions of people today, and the many more to come. Multiply your costs by millions of individuals, and you have the true cost to society. I always look at expenses as, what else could we have spent that money on. Think of the number of good things we could have spent that money on. Don't know why this was in my suggestions. It's a very hard watch for me. 1 year ago I held the hand of my high school bf for 2 days while he died of complications of alcohol related liver disease. He'd been very sick for several months with a host of the usual and some very odd symptoms. His brain was just as badly affected as his liver, and had been for a few years, just no one knew it. I just noticed him slowly disappearing inside himself. Close to the end he was in and out of hospital and forced to stop drinking as a result of being there. Sober for the first time in decades he was shocked at how easy he found it to stay stopped after going home. He never tried to stop before even though he'd been told decades ago his liver was bad. He'd been told he had no normal tissue left in his liver maybe 10 years ago. Still no desire to get help or stop. He has a son who is now without a father. He loved his son very much, just not enough to get sober and live to see him into adulthood. Ultimately, I believe his refusal to save himself was due to extreme cowardice. I'll never be able to fully forgive him for what he did to himself.

I'm sure that he wanted to stop more than anything in the world, I was lucky to have such a huge support system to help me through the tough times. @@liverdisease-qb6rk Thanks. I spoke harshly in that comment unfortunately. I have a lot of compassion for those so afflicted. I had addiction struggles myself. It's still very raw for me. I miss him so much and am going to be angry for a while I think. The liver is an amazing organ. I hope yours can bounce back in time and you live long and well.

It is wild to me medical care can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Grew up with nhs free healthcare and where I am now it is super subsidised and capped to a certain amount (in hundreds for hospital stays not thousands!). I truly think healthcare for profit should be illegal in any country where tax is collected.

Yes. Congrats on the 8k subs, LD. I am sure it's going to go up; you have a great channel. Christ, these insurance companies and doctors. "I am sorry, but we are not in this network or that network or that network this year." Even my dentist got rid of Delta. Who does that? I am glad you got the help you needed. I've had a few health things as a result of alcohol - nothing really serious, but I met my deductible this year because of the alcohol treatment, certainly nothing like what you have dealt with physically and financially. But keep up what you are doing; you help a great amount of people, including myself.

I just got told the other day that I have to oat 1400 dollars to have the rest of my teeth pulled and my insurance company only pays 1000 and they have already done that this year, so I'm screwed. Ron's mom mentioned it, and it made me wonder... Are you able to apply for Medicaid? Does your diagnosis count as a disability? I remember that I was able to get medicaid after my car accident. It was a pain, but it had to be done. My car insurance, the other person's car insurance, AND my own insurance didn't even cover the first two surgeries.I don't know your entire situation, and don't answer if it makes you uncomfortable. I'm just sorry for the stress this must cause you! Definitely great incentive not to drink. I hope someone sees this and feels the gravity of it. Even when you do have the best possible outcome, you're still going to pay the consequences of drinking yourself to sickness. There are so many benefits to quitting even when times get desperate, though, and you are living proof, my friend. So glad you have been enjoying life. Hey Amanda! I have insurance. I don't qualify for Medicare. I wish I did! I am not on any kind of assistance at all. We are just figuring it out as we go. The Medicaid rules vary from state to state, but here they consider HOUSEHOLD income. They can waive the income requirement when medical bills exceed a certain amount.

Prayers LD. Health care costs are outrageous and have been for a long time. I wouldn't go to the er unless i thought i was getting ready to croak. You have to pay the hospital, then the dr you see in the ER will bill you for their services and it just goes on and on.

My neighbor just died of cirrhosis. He knew he had it but he couldn't get sober so he just drank every waking minute til he died. Was very sad to witness. I'm coming up on 1 year sober. Stay strong brother.

The cost of travel, gas, hotels, food. Loss of wages by the caregiver and the sick person. On top of the medical cost. I have a rare liver disease not from alcohol, but end stage liver disease and cirrhosis I has all the same symptoms.

Sorry you had to go through all that,L.D. being in debt because of medical expenses is unfortunate, you probably know we have health care here that's covered by our taxes. So I didn't have to incur those costs. However it's not perfect and we have our own problems with it

Hi LD, As I'm from the UK can you explain what hitting your deductibles means? Here in the UK our NHS, HOSPITALS, DOCTORS are free although we pay national insurance out of our salary which is about £200 a month and £11 a month for medicine which covers all tablets for various things. We are lucky in the UK to have the NHS. Glad your still doing well and I watch every video. Steve LONDON
Hey! So.... you have an out of pocket amount that you have to meet before they will start to cover anything. They will pay a percentage until you hit your deductible and then it's all covered after that. Mine was 10000 dollars, so after I met that amount they start covering. But, if you have a large bill upfront, you pay the full amount.
