I did this and it was a huge success. I had golden spids growing and I harvested them because there were potatoes bulging out the sides. Some were really big and I got about 40 of them per bag. that is not bad at all. They went really well with spaghetti hoops and chicken burgers lol yum.
One of the best explanations given on growing potatoes in bag. Simple and easy to understand..... I wanted to try the container growing method and started digging youtube videos, and found this your explanation to be the best. I'm going to try this soon. Thank you so much. BTW i like your video color setting.....clean n looking fresh :)
Thank you I looked at loads of video’s of harvesting potatoes but wanted to know what to do once you have planted your potatoes and only found your vid explains that😀 I’m a first time potato grower so a bit of the unknown for me🌸🌸
The bags are porous allowing the water to drain freely. If you are using bags that don't drain then you would need to make plenty of holes in the bottom to prevent the tubers rotting.
Hello. Unfortunately we no loner sell these ones. We do have 2 other options though... www.vanmeuwen.com/p/potato-growing-bags/V48802VM and also www.vanmeuwen.com/p/potato-growing-bag/V60476VM
Hi there. Great video. I'm a school teacher and want to plant some potatoes in grow bags like this video. I'm worried that I won't have the time before the end of term to chit the potatoes and harvest them in time by the end of the school year. Would it be okay to sow my seed potatoes in the grow bags without chitting? Thank you
Hello - That is a tricky one as they wont have quite enough time to make a decent crop now. However I think it is a worthwhile (and fun) process to go through with children and even if the crop is very tiny, they can still gain a good undeerstanding of the process! In future years I would recomend that you chit them in February and get them planted early. Keep them somewhere frost-free until late spring. Opt for a first-early variety and aim to harvest as late as possible. You will definately get better results :)
The bags are porous allowing the water to drain freely. If you are using bags that don't drain then you would need to make plenty of holes in the bottom to prevent the tubers rotting.
Grow bags which I ordered from Amazon India have holes on the sides, will there be soil leakage, do I need to close the holes and how about watering grow bags, do I need to make a hole below for draining water.
It depends on how large the holes are but it will probably be ok. Once they plants are rooted in then the roots will hold the soil nicely in place. The holes will also allow drainage!
There are so many to try that it really comes down to personal preference, but you may find that some of the modern blight resistant varieties offer the best results
How cost effective is this? It seems I could actually buy more potatoes for the amount of money spent to grow. Bags are reusable but you are replacing soil, fertilizer and start plants each time. Thanks for your reply.
Yes you probably could - but you may not be able to buy certain varieties in the supermarket so growing your own offers a chance to taste less common varieties. It's also good fun, and makes a great project to do with children.
why are the potatoes I have grown turn out skinny. it looks unhealthy as well. does it have to do with how often I need to water them?I currently water them daily. the soil I see in your videos appear quite dry.
Potato plants need plenty of water. Keep them consistently moist. It may be that your plants need more light if they are getting very tall. Plant them in full sun next time.
Water them regularly. In summer they will probably need watering daily to prevent the compost drying out. The aim is to keep the plants conmsistently moist throughout the growing period - never letting the compost get waterlogged or dried out.
The cost of the grow bags or containers, the expensive soil, and the fertilizer adds up to 10 times the price it would cost to buy these potatoes at the grocery store. I don't know why people keep claiming they grow vegetables to save money because they have to pay extra to grow this. It is more of a hobby which is fine but they are not saving money.
I think getting some experience growing food is valuable though. It's good to be able to provide for yourself a bit. If you made your own compost then it would be much cheaper. The grow bags would be a one off purchase and would last a while and seed potatoes aren't that expensive (and you might even be able to do your own if you learn).
Wonderful 🤩. Short, precise & easy to understand
Best video on potato plants ive ever seen. Finally a good video with simple instructions x x x x

Try something like this www.vanmeuwen.com/p/potato-growing-bags/V48802VM
Nice tutorial, very informative and helpful. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed.
BrokenInTheBox how often do I water the grow bag after I’ve placed my seedlings do you know ?
Water whenever the compost starts to dry out. Just aim to keep the compost reliably moist
Liked the video and the young farmer.Welcome to my farm in India.
Tank you l love
Delightful video
thanks
Wow love it. Wish we are neighbour 😉
Excellent nice simple no nonsense video thanks. Do my bags require holes for drainage though?
The bags are porous allowing the water to drain freely. If you are using bags that don't drain then you would need to make plenty of holes in the bottom to prevent the tubers rotting.
Ευχαριστώ πολύ,η περιγραφή σας πολύ καλή!!
Hi thanks for the great video..
Can yiu reuse the soil for the next crop harvest of potatoes?
It's best to use fresh soil each year as the previous crop will have depleted any nutrients, and it also prevents soil borne diseases being spread.
Do you trim stems each time you hill/mound up?
No dont cut the stems - just mound the soil up around them and cover them again
very well explained.
how long does it usualy takes from grow to harvest?
Around 15 to 20 weeks :)
@@vanmeuwenplants can you turn around and replant using same soil and keep it going?
@@jstump1972 I am wondering this too.
@@jstump1972 Maybe add it to compost pile and once that is done you can re-use it.
O M G...
How often do I water my grow bag after placing the potato seedlings ?
It will depend on the weather conditions and the size of the plants. Try to keep the soil consistently damp, but not constantly soggy.
Van Meuwen thank you
@Van Meuwen
Where can we buy those potato grow bags please, they look much stronger than the ones i have seen...Please post a link thank you

Good tutorial.
When we can harvest potato after planting?
Once the foliage has turned yellow and died back they can be lifed.
Is doing this cheaper than buying potatoes in the store?
Where do you get seed potatoes? ... or can you just buy any potato and wait until you see sprouts on them?
You can buy seed potatoes from Van Meuwen if you are in the UK. www.vanmeuwen.com/fruit-and-vegetables/vegetables/potatoes
I'm in the U.S. Can you not use just any potato you buy in the store?
Yes you can but you cant guarantee that they will be disease free!
I bought mine at Home Depot!
Buy them here! search.vanmeuwen.com/search?asug=&w=seed+potatoes
Do u make holes on the bag?

@@vanmeuwenplants tks for replying!😊
Hello can you tell me the size of these bags thank you
These bags are around 25 -30 litres.
Great video does water drain out of the bag
Thanks! Yes the bags are woven so they allow extra water to escape.
@@vanmeuwenplants Thank you
So... how deep? What slow release fertilizer? Water how often? Do you feed extra in bags, if so, what?
You'll find all of this info in our video :)
What else other than potatoes 🥔 would do well with this earthing up approach ?
Celery!

Hi so to be clear when is the best time to grow potatoes I'm in ARIZONA thanks
March and April are the best months to plant your potatoes.
Is this potato bag good for tomatoes or squash
Yes its is :)
About the bags. Do they transpire? Does O2 and water transpire through them or are they impermiable?
They are semi permeable and have drainage holes in the base.
Does anyone know the best potatoes to grow.

Very decent encouraging presentation, good job
so is there aney another way .. to purchase ...
Not from us. You would need to find a supplier closer to home.
how to water?
Just water into the top of the bag - the same as you would with a pot.
Or buy a bag with a Velcro flap on the side
Hello you didn't say how often to water them.
Water them regularly. In summer they will probably need watering daily to prevent the compost drying out. The aim is to keep the plants conmsistently moist throughout the growing period - never letting the compost get waterlogged or dried out.
