This is a BIG one. I will try to compare the four main big Buchla inspired "Spectral Processor" modules:
The Buchla & Tiptop 296t, the Sputnik Spectral Processor, the Verbos Electronics Bark Filter and the Frap Tools Fumana.
You will see they all sound and behave quite diferently and this is why I guess this video might of some interest.
Have fun!

Instant like even before I've watched it. I've wanted to see this exact subject covered forever.
Excellent comparison! A little clarification: the numbers on the plate aren't the bands' central frequencies, but their extremes. That's why they are between the faders! Hope this makes sense, cheers!
Oh nice I didn’t read the manual well enough hahaha. But I guessed so by the sound of it as a 15 Hz Bandpass would not pass much signals
I have the Fumana and love it. I also love here the Sputnik one. They compliment each other very well.
Thank you for doing this! Really interesting!
Thanks for that excellent comparison of the Sput and 296t. I bought the Sputnik last year. And this confirms why. It just sounds so much better than the rest. Alive, rich, and very "modular" sounding. I too like the visual aspect on the fader LEDs. I like the longer fader throws on the 296t though. If you take out the increase in amplitude above 0db, the faders on the 296t are about twice as long. As these modules are perhaps more for studio work as opposed to performative, it's nice to have the greater resolution.
Was looking for this exact video, great job like usual Stazma!
Merci beaucoup Staz!
Thank you. Unexpected fun!
well done wrangling all these together! i do slightly prefer the tta 296 sound, but i think i'll stick with my sputnik as some of the features make it capable of a bit more sonic weirdness. spectral energy transfer is fun to nerd out on!
one other small tip: the envelope follower duration on the sputnik does actually have a minor impact on the sound, so there's some subtle tweakability there too!
This vid confirms everything I love about the sputnik. Sticking with it for sure.
Very nice, I learned a lot from this one
Très intéressant. Merci pour cette comparaison.
great and informative video, thank you
Thanks sir ;-)
Should I really look at this?
I've already decided in favour of the Sputnik and bought it😊. I'm also very happy with it.
I'll watch it anyway, of course, because your videos are very interesting.
Travail de titan !
Bravo et merci
Merci à toi pour les encouragements ;-)
Super interesting, thanks for making this vid
You’re welcome ! It was a hard but fun journey
Yes, amazing tutorial, fantastic with more information about these exotic modules. I’ve got spectraphon, that’s based upon these but become something totally different.
Thank you
I too have a spectraphon and trying to decide if I go for one of these as well 😂
Great! Would love to play with the Spectraphon at some point too!
Great! Thanks 😊
oh my this will be interesting
Thanks for such a detailed comparison. I am thinking of getting the Sputnik or furmana. I only had a deep look at the Sputnik and did not realise the others did not use the faders for the program out. That probably rules out furmana as it’s to clean sounding. If you could turn down some of the bands on the vocoder it would be amazing. I need weirdness in my life :)
the tiptop one sounds so damn good
It’s a matter of taste but I think it’s my favorite as well.
If I’m not correct the sputnik is a collab with ssf and anything SSF touches is gold
The Verbos Bark wins!
Well that didn't stop me GASing after the Fumana. Although in some parts it does sound a bit smooth than is really my tasting. Almost wanting both a Fumana plus a Sputnik now....
I would have loved a section in the shootout on spectral mixing, with two complex sounds to Odd and Even and how well each of them manages this aspect of the unit's operation. But overall very informative, thank you.
I didn’t thought about it indeed, it was already quite a bit of work doing this.
Bon bah maintenant il manque le Moog Spectravox dans ta review ! ^^
Pls do a demo for the Serge VC Resonate EQ
I will ask RS ;-)
The frequencies written on fumana's panel are the corner frequencies of the bands. The center frequency sits in between the corners, that's what you want to compare with. So for example the center frequency of the lowest band is 40 hz, not 15hz, and for the top band it's 13750hz, and of course the bands cover the range between the corners. Every video on fumana seems to get this wrong. Still great comparison though!
Yes indeed, but still the center frequency are different than the others. Glad you liked the video ;-)
I bought the 296t because I've always wanted a Buchla 200 system and TTA allowed for that dream to slowly come true (259t and 285t are coming!).
I have to say that the Fumana would be my choice, mainly because of the features but also that low end(!)...having said all that, I do with there was a way to switch the program outs on the 296t to take account of the sliders, but yeah..that was not available on the OG 296 and that's that I guess. I do love the sound of the 296t...but the Fumana is the one for me from this test.
I didn't like the sound of Verbos. Brutal sounds I get from processing the 296t...but yeah, Bark is not my cup of tea. Nice test!...I think...I have Fumana GAS now....oh well...back to my lovely 296t :)
Great review .. apparently moog just came out with their spectral processor 😂 round 2?
I have a Moog style filter bank video in the work so maybe !
oh my god, I already thought: it's difficult to choose an complex oscillator, but this is much harder to choose..
Just know these are all VERY good modules
Had both fumana and bark thinking I would quickly find out which one would stay- took me 2 yrs to finally only keep the fumana! Quite impressed with Sputnik and TTA here too! 🤯
I’d love to hear the new serge vcreseq in there for comparison- even if it is very different being resonant
Comparing four at the time was already quite a headache, but I’d love to try it at some point for sure (GTS demo coming soon tho)
May be a comparison between the serge and the buchla which you have if you can get hold of the serge. Yes for gts!
Haha ! Mais ouais, c'est surprenant ce choix.
TipTop Buchla all day long.
This video: 1 day of fame, then came Spectravox 😅
I was hoping the flame curves would have been included
I also have it on loan but decided not to include it here as it does it does not have that same DNA: it’s more a Moog inspired unit with an additional sequencer (like the MURF). I will make a video about these soon too ;-)
Have you tried the new Tracker+ from Polyend?
It should arrive at my house today ;-)
Where does the Moog Spectavox fit into this???
I have to try it to say but it’s probably a good addition to this spectral processor family. It probably goes a little less far on the envelope follower side, but you get variable frequency !
You forgot to answer one important question! Which one would you buy if you could only have one haha
I’m happy with the 296t but it’s probably because it’s the one I’m used to since I have it since quite a while. It’s the only one I’ll keep as I already sold the Sputnik (that I bought just for the video hahaha) and the FUMANA and Bark are going back to Frap Tools and Verbos soon ;-)
@@Stazma its funny but I really like the sound of the 296t. There is something about the bite that it has that resonates with me even though its not the most featured.... but ya preamp please !!!
mince, vous êtes passé à l'anglais...
En fait je fait 90% des vidéos en anglais et de temps en temps je n Français.
@@Stazma ha ok désolé, je vous ai découvert il y a peu. J’aime beaucoup vos vieeos
@@delseproject pas de problème ;-)
