Magazine 60 ~ Don Quichotte 1984 Disco Purrfection Version

- The enigmatic lyrics of this synth driven dance tune lend it a literary air with its casual referencing to Miguel de Cervantes classic tale of "Don Quixote". The song opens with an Englishman mispronouncing the name and trying to reach a "Don Key Shot" by calling an increasingly alarmed woman who tells him in Spanish that Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are not there. I listened to the lyrics and found that they are actually saying "Sancho Pantha" and "Don Quixote" although the printed title is "Don Quichotte" which is pronounced the same way, I'm guessing to avoid copyrights. The English translation of the lyrics go like "Today they are still fighting" and "dance little donkey, dance" (donkey?) are fanciful images that again reinforce the Cervantes story where Quixote is presented as a delusional character who sees himself as a knight on a crusade against evil and inducts his neighbor Sancho Panza into his virtual reality. Magazine 60 was put together by French music producer Jean-Luc Drion who along with recruits Dominique Régiacorte, Pierre Mastro and Véronique Olivier committed this unusually catchy tune to vinyl. The band started off in 1981 being signed to Barclay Records, releasing an eponymously named EP that went gold in France, producing two music videos to support it. A follow up release was their first LP called "60's Slows" which was a Stars on 45 type megamix that included "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", "Without You", "Blueberry Hill" and other 60's ballads tied together with the chorus of "60's are back again". Hungering for more, Drion embrace the synthesized sounds of the 80's creating "Don Quichotte" as a European single in 1984, and then including the tune on their subsequent LP "Costa Del Sol" in 1985. The tune hit the Hot 100 in May of 1986 peaking at #56, but went to #16 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Disco Chart earlier that same year. The album release was held back in the US and not made available domestically until 1987 which was too late and the band lost momentum, never again to make the listings. An interesting side note comes from the Spanish lyrics of "Baila, borriquito. Baila, borriquito oh oh" which have been widely misinterpreted as "Vaya pour Equis Dos" some said meant "Lets go for a beer (Dos Equis). Fun, but they could not have been more wrong. I thought the same thing for years until I found the Spanish lyrics were saying "Dance little donkey, dance" something that Quixote might have seen in his imaginary world. Now, I have to get and read the story of Cervantes "Don Quixote", made even more famous as a film named "The Man Of La Mancha". Wow, pop music putting you in touch with classic literature. PS I just picked up my copy of Don Quixote, its a big book but Cervantes starts if off with a preface and immediately addressed me as "idle reader". I'm hooked.

When I was a teenager I thought the song was called 'Donkey Hotes'. I recently read the book Don Quixotes and the other morning I woke up after my brain made the connection.
😂
DJ's were blasting this jam on The Day Richard Ramirez was caught in East L.A 1985. - Block Parties everywhere. Carne Asada and Bergie Beer. I'm 45 now. Thanks for the upload !!
I adored this song and have played it thousands of times over all of the years. Baja Records 1985.
Bringing back the memories of good old days, i love and so much appreciate this song ❤
Flashback 🎉😊❤
Late 80's parties in the San Fernando Valley!!!
Hell-yeah! No rubbers! We are gonna live forever!!!
Don Quichotte y Sancho Panza siguen estando aquí . Mi época de los 80's permanece.. Temazoooo 💯x💯✌💃🎚🔊
It's BUENO GRANDE !!
I remember running to my room to hit record on my cassette deck when it came on the radio, never managing to get the whole song, and the damn DJ would cut the song waaaaay early, so I never heard the very beginning or end of the song, and was years before I even learned who it even was. It was that very cool part of the 80s that there was sooo many awesome synth bands popping up at once that it was overwhelming to become all their fans at once.
Yup, no Shazam just had to figure out the song and band.. Nothing like the 80's👍
There was SO much good music all at the same time for years and years; you could actually listen to commercial radio and hear something good
me too
I wish I kept all those cassettes.i recorded off the radio as a kid all day waiting for something I liked.always going to jj newberry for a pack of cassettes. The mighty 690(AM).1580 kday, kjlh,Frankw.
DJs cut those songs off early for a reason because they knew kids like you and me were trying to get the full recording for free lol.
i opened my first aerobics studio in 1990. back then i was green & couldn't find non-stop continuous music with BPM for group exercise. i didn't know anything about don quichotte. i ordered this cassette from TSR los angelos (music for a hot body) just to see if it would work for my warmup...and i still have the cassette & use it in 2023....fixin to put it on CD... i'm old school...so sue me!...lol i just now found it on video on you tube! we didn't have you tube back then!! i am up to date with my current aerobics music but i can't do it without 'don quichotte'...he gave me the courage & confidence to find my dream in his music, when i first started. that song boosted my ability to teach...i just retired from it at 73...but i miss it and may go back to teaching....
I really enjoyed reading your comment ❤ it’s a really neat song! I wish you well in retirement :) Keep on rockin’!
สุดยอดมากคับ.ขอบคุณมากที่นำเพลงดังๆจากอดีต.มาให้ฟัง.ชอบมาก.สมัยยังวัยรุ่น.1984.
Hey! Where are ya from? It did an auto-translation for me, but I am not confident that I recognize the script. The global reach of this song is so neat! I wish you well, no matter where you are from. Take care and best wishes! From Chicago, Illinois, USA! ❤🎉
Wow finally i found this song for long years thank you for uploading.
I know it’s been a year since your comment but I have 20 hours plus of this music (1980-1988) club stuff on my Spotify. Let me know if you want me to share the playlist.

@@moniquenoverola7843 I think ‘84. Idk tho I was born ‘92 LOL my parents love this music and they would always play stuff like this.
I love this song. It brings a lot of childhood memories!
Thanks DJDiscoCat for sharing, and clarifying the lyrics. I always thought the man was asking may I speak to "Mr. Don Kirshner" please. He was a music producer in the 70's and 80's and had a late night concert show on Network TV. Like others I never was able to get a recording, but would catch it on the radio or in a club. It reminds me of some of Lemon Jelly's songs, especially Nice Weather for ducks.
Me and my home boys used to play this song in a boombox in a street corner back in da 80's ,
good times indeed 🌴🌴😎👍
Nivel premium audio puramente discotheque.. hace bailar hasta los huesos.. esto es hacer leyenda algo que jamás morirá..
Yeeee
Essa música compõe uma das faixas do LP internacional da novela brasileira " Cambalacho " em 1986 . Hit anos 80 !! 🎸🎼
Oh my- an old friend... "and Sancho Panza"...this was huge on Miami radio back in the mid-80s too. In Germany, it was a dance club number too. The Group was on TV (lip syncing) many times too. Awesome! The EP-version here...thanks! (gracias)...
Pus esse som pra trabalhar , quase não lembrava dos detalhes, pauleira 😂 80's insuperável.
I am laughing remembering to the first time i heard this song back in mid 80s in my early teen years. I thought it was a weird but danceable song back then for the School Dance Night. Brings back good memories!
Thank you everyone around the world for your beautiful comments.Classic Magazine 60.God Bless
Loving it first in DALLAS CAN NOW BREATH IN OREGON AND LOVE IT EVEN MORE !!!
Namaste Bro
Heard this song in the 80s then recently heard it in 2016 or so. I missed it so much. This song is excellent, no message, no point, just good song 👏
This record was Hot in Los Angeles in the 80's. The clubs would blast this S***!!! Floor Filler all the way to the beach.
They played this at Rich's in Houston 1986.... I had the 12" still love it!
I love it . Period I miss those days
Someone already said it, and DJ Disco Cat already replied (by the way, hi, I LOVE your channel!), but:
- Don Quixote: old Spanish spelling, back when the x was pronounced like the current letter j (approximately English h in some accents, although much harder in many accents in Spain). The modern spelling that you'll see on the book if you want to buy it in Spanish is Don Quijote. Compare to the country name for México, not pronounced mecseeco but meheeco - the spelling could have been modernized to Méjico, but for historical reasons it never was. Both old spellings Don Quixote and Mexico, were conserved for use in English.
- Don Quichotte: French name for the same person/book, from back when we used to translate people's names (Jeanne d'Arc in French, Joan of Arc in English, Juana de Arco in Spanish...). So it's kind of funny, but in the song there's an English guy saying the French word in his accent (must be because the band is French).
Regarding Sancho Panza (and someone said this too, I'm just reuniting the info), in most of Spain the z is pronounced like an English hard th (like in 'thick'), while in some places in Spain and almost all of Latin America it is a hard s sound. So "Pantha" or "Pansa" but no native would say Panza with the English z as in wizard sound.
OK I was bored so I explained what I know about the subject, which is basically just that. Once again THANK YOU I LOVE YOUR VERSIONS OF THESE SONGS
Back in the day the 'x' in Castilian Spanish was pronounced like the 'sh' sound in english. This shifted to an 'h' sound later on. 'qui[sh]ote' would have been how it was pronounced. I think Mexico may have developed differently because it has aztec origins.
@@christiangonzalez8310 No. La "x" se pronunciaba como una j.
Keep going! Why does the varied pronunciations lead to the caller being unable to read Don Quixote?
Super Salud Miguel de Cervantes abrazos ❤ super chingones salud 🥂
Aww the good old times, new wave music, Florentine Gardens, Hollywood 1986.
Ultra * high * perfection, sound quality ... Thanks!
It was a very popular song in Thailand's discotheque and skating hall in 1984.

Bella época....!!!
This must be a rare early 80's find that I've heard for the first time here--Thank you DJ Disco Cat Brother! :)
Wow, somewhere in the back of my mind, this one. Like the old skool telephone sound. Old skool funky electro-pop never fails for me; transition period from disco to EDM in a way, like the Detroit techno in the same period. Love it. Great upload! Great! Thanks. My body's moving like a snake. Have a nice weekend.
Was a favorite of Jeff Mills / The Wizard on WJLB

Muito top‼️slk✨🔊👊🏻👍🏻
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
1. There is no copyright to the name "Don Quixote" or the book. 2. Quichotte is how Quixote was pronounced when the book was released (Spanish and French weren't as differentiated then as they are now). That is key to understanding why the caller is unable to reach Don Quixote, and why he is not available.
Super. 😊👍 Ça me rappelle ma jeunesse dans les années 80. 🤗♥️
First heard this on the Northern Exposure soundtrack in the early 90s. What a strange way to be introduced.
This is the hit, on my way to Tijuana mx, mighty six 90 radio station, I'm still jamming thiz #1 hit , lol, Stevie Maez, seal beach California 2024

Beste tijd met muziek de 80's veel dance muziek gemaakt die tijd nog veel vinyl van die tijd alle 12"
Thanks for sharing great music.
😮i was FLOORED when i found a copy of this in a used vinyl show, i had heard it JUST ONCE back in the mid 1980's and NEVER FORGOT IT, JUST ONCE, and over the years i'd ask people who dj'd but they didn't know, FF to 2017 or around then and BAM, i found it.
There was a Spanish commercial running now while I was watching tennis, and the commercial was selling a product and I said aloud “No señor” and I was like ‘oh I remember that song’ back in the day in L.A.’, cruising, dancing, after hours……oh the days of no worries. No señor 😆
Curti nos anos 80.
The DJ's on the radio talked so fast to the point I couldn't understand what the name of this song was back then. Now I finally know almost 40 years later. This song was also used as "bumper music" on the Rush Limbaugh radio program.
Mi Amore esta cancione!
Loosing my virginity.
1985..
What an amazing memory!
How is this song nearly 40 years old ( I was only 12) !? Radios didn't play it much so I remember calling in to request they play it.
