  • Everyone would like to have access to better, healthier food, but government regulations favor huge factory farms while making it difficult for the thousands of independent farmers across America to reach consumers. Joel Salatin, owner of Polyface Farm, recently testified at a congressional hearing about letting local producers sell beef and pork products directly to consumers. Government regulators are terrified that loosening regulations on small farmers will result in unsafe food, but there’s every reason to believe that local food is safer and more accountable to the consumers than these large, anonymous producers.

Kibbe on Liberty is a weekly podcast with libertarian author, economist, and community organizer Matt Kibbe. As the president of Free the People, Kibbe has decades of experience in the libertarian political sphere, but in these troubled times he believes that open dialogue is needed to bring people together. This means being willing to talk, and especially listen, to those with whom we might not always agree, trying to understand perspectives that might otherwise be foreign to us.
Kibbe on Liberty's growing roster of guests includes politicians, economists, comedians, writers, radio personalities, activists, journalists, and even a magician or two-with topics of conversation ranging from current affairs to craft beer and the Grateful Dead. So grab a cold one, and settle in for the next hour of Kibbe on Liberty, mostly honest conversations with mostly interesting people.

Always cool to see Joel in studio. If he’s away from the farm you know it’s important.

I think the point of some of this is trying to get rid of eating natural meat and replace it with artificial meat.
Also I really love that closure Joel

I went to the polyface farm website and wanted to try some of his chicken and the total was 25 dollars ok no problem I go to check out and it's 50 dollars for shipping ups ground for 1 chicken don't add anything else to it because then its 2 packages and 100 for shipping 😂 absolutely making more money on the shipping than the actual product. What a scam. Thanks but no thanks Joel!

They aren't making money on shipping. It is very intensive and expensive to ship perishable food unless at scale. Even then it's expensive. Joel resisted shipping food for years. He actually advocates for people to seek out local farmers doing things the right way. But the demand was so great he gave in, but it's going to be expensive. The way you get the cost down is buy more food. One chicken is going to be vey expensive. Ten in one order is significantly less/chicken. Most of the grass fed beef online sellers have free shipping once you spend $100 to $150, which is roughly 4 to 6 pounds of meat, which is the weight range of 1 Cornish Cross hen.
FYI The $25/chicken is actually pretty much the going price for any chicken raised that way. I follow numerous homesteading & regenerative farming CZcamsrs and they're all pretty much raising Cornish Cross hens that cost roughly $25/whole chicken. And they all sell locally. They get asked about shipping, but they explain why it doesn't make sense and like Joel advocate for seeking out local farmers using the same methods.
