  • Down time on your tractor can cost you time and money. If you take the time to inspect your tractor you can avoid the simple things that can lead to expensive repairs and downtime. All machines will need maintenance, however a tractor is a different kind of machine. A tractor is essentially a power unit on wheels that uses a PTO to power multiple implements to get the job done. Mowers, a bush hog, rotary cutter, tiller for a garden, pallet forks, etc...all of these help get the most value from your tractor.

    I am now 65 and cannot get under a tractor. Well actually get up is the problem. I have a ventrac and a John Deere 45 hp. Neither can I deal with. I know how but just cannot do it physically.

    Great inspection walkthru. I'm embarrassed by my lack of maintenance. I go in with a great plan, but typically stray from the plan and get slack.

    It’s been a long time since I’ve used my tractor and other vehicles. It doesn’t get too cold where they are. The battery on each machine is connected to a solar trickle charger. Hopefully these chargers will keep the batteries in good health.
    In regards to bolts, the mechanic who prepared the tractor used a pen to mark with a line each wheel and loader bolt.
    I recommend lifting the tractor’s hood too if storing the tractor undercover. With the hood up mice will not feel as safe as secure. Do this or get a cat.
    For the 50 hour service on my tractor, which required replacing two hydraulic filters along with an engine filer, that were all factory fitted and painted in, I bought a oil filter grabber that attaches to a ratchet. It cos sometime like $15 and works well. Three metal arms fit around filter and tighten up when the ratchet is turned. It’s great.

    Hey Joe, I just put out a video about installing an on-board battery maintainer on my T-Boss 550. That’d be great for your tractor too, especially if you just have it sitting during those long winter periods.

    Great list of basic things to check. I especially like your emphasis on torque, filling your tires, checking for critter nests & the importance of a good dealer. I’d much rather buy a mediocre tractor from a great dealer, than the other way around. I’m gonna try your trick w/ leaving the hood open to keep mice away. They seem to love chewing on wires.

      I appreciate your kind words my friend. And I probably borrowed that trick of the hood from someone else so can’t take the credit. But it works!!! Thanks for watching and stay safe out there!

    😅 Joe!
    A battery tender is your friend. I just have a little plug on my battery that the tender plugs into. I have three and I just move them around. Of course, you have more to talk about when your battery is dead.😂 Good stuff!

    I was watching this video and I noticed at the 10:02 mark --- a shot at the alternator showed a black discoloration on the alternator "red" charge wire protective cover. That big charge wire at the back of the alternator is building up heat, check all wire connections . A three year old battery should not be giving you problems holding a charge. might be a bad charging wire or you do have a broken plate in your battery.
    Just a thought, great video, appreciate your effort.

    Hey Joe, great video. A lot of great tips. I added a slip clutch to my rotary cutter shaft years ago and I know it has saved me from many breakages. Also found that a yard cat is best mouse defense for the tractor. I’m totally with you on the painting, not my favorite thing to do. Enjoyed the video, take care.

    Hey Joe, I keep my 7320 on a battery tender. I leave the pigtail attached to the battery itself, and just detach the cable when leaving with the tractor. I feel that using a tender on a battery will make the battery last much longer than it would otherwise.

    Just wondering, would that battery pack start the tractor on its own or does it need the partially weak battery to boost start. Would be nice to just to carry that battery pack, plug in and go. It started so quickly 😊

    • @JoeTheFarmer
      @JoeTheFarmer  Před 4 měsíci

      Would absolutely start it without the battery! Its so handy. However, these new tractors with a lot of electronics have some odd reactions when the battery is low. Ie the electronic power shuttle.
