It's lovely to see people just having a bit of a laugh. So often history seems like stories of seriousness and suffering, and at the end of the day they were people just like us, with little human moments of their own.
Yes!

They were happier than us.
Amen brother
Just another example of people being people no matter what time or age
So much of what we see of these people is from stiffly-posed old portraits or films of them walking down the street or waving at deperting ships. Watching parents playing with their children in a swimming hole is one of the most humanizing things I've ever seen in an antique film. Bravo.
Well, people were pretty optimistic in 1902 compared to post-WWI.
@@pomponi0 True. In 1902 they literally thought war was a thing of the past, they thought they were too civilized to ever have a war again. People thought rationality had won. WW1 was as big as a shock to them as a sudden World War would be to us now..
(Source: Stefan Zweig)
@@pereiraplaza222 or would that be shocking today?
Don’t think about people in the past are “ black and white” and do “ boring thing’s”. They are just people like us that have colors inside them and do some fun actively just like today.
Before these fantastic films were shown to us, it was often thought that Victorians never smiled. That, of course, was because the long shutter speeds of early photography needed people to stand as still as possible much longer than they could hold a smile. These films look like modern people dressed in Victorian clothes because they’re basically the same as us but in a different time.
So often history presents fathers as being stern authoritarians constantly admonishing their children but here we see children having so much fun with their father who , along with their mother , is relishing the childrens delight at splashing dad! The real closeness of the family is heart warming & touching,
Dad was kind of cute too!
History doesn't show fathers as being stern, but rather, it seems like the modern interpretations of history have allowed our opinion of the past to sway in that direction, as well as the human obsession with the intriguing, as plotlines with hard and stern fathers creates a far more tense dynamic than one with a soft-spoken, loving figure involved. Also, the feminist rhetoric that's spread across universities, in combination with a decrease of academic credulity, has caused for ideas like the patriarchy to become more extreme, and further taint the history of men and their contributions to society.
@@iSmellBreakfast Another man afraid of women and their equality with men.
@@389383 Nope--calling out hateful rhetoric is not the same as labelling all feminist contributions to society as bad or unnecessary. It seems like your belief that my criticism of a specific issue regarding feminism being misogynistic seems to prove a point that any negative opinion pointed towards the feminist movement has to be due to sexism.
My original comment about the role of men in society being altered by misandry has nothing to do with a masculine fear of gender equality; gender equality is something that should be strived for, and therefore, if you were truly for equality, you wouldn't have said what you did because the protection of men and their own liberties is part of the equal equation (equality means both sides are fairly accommodated).
@@389383 - Why do leftists only see and hear what they want to see and hear? Don't be like that
The clarity of the video at the swimming hole is astounding! I kept saying to myself, "This is 120 years old!" And when people walked by the camera and bowed and tipped their hats, I also realized they were now saying hello to us 120 years later. Just unreal.
@DeusÉAteu vdd
Also the notion that maybe a few of them were born 200 years ago!
@@drott150 🤔
The more elderly folks walking by were probably no more than 60-70. It was much rarer to maintain healthy posture into your 80s back then, so 190 years ago, at most.
It’s mind blowing!! We are looking through a portal back in time, it’s unreal 🤯
They are in the trend of the 21st century all in burkinis.
Most of the photos of victorian era are with people in serious pose, so it's very refreshing and relatable to see that they were human as us, having fun at the beach and booing to the camera 😊
1:10 It's like those people far away from us for so long are saying hello to us through the time machine. What a wonderful feeling mixed with sadness when we know that all these good people are gone from this world. ❤😢❤😢
So nice to see the goofy side of this era. People just being people and having fun. Seems more real and personal
They didn't realize 120 years later they'd have the whole world watching them on a handheld device 😆😅

Yup
Aaaww what a charming video! Lovely family! We are so used to see people from the Victorian and Edwardian eras looking so serious on photos, we forget they did have fun!
Very impressive and touching. It was also really nice to see how the father interacted and played with his kids. One would think that fathers back then were quite authoritarian and strict, but he's just like a kind dad today. You can even see that he was thinking "arrrrgh not again", when his daughter splashed him with the bucket of water, but he didn't scold her or anything, just played along, like "kids will be kids". :) That was so adorable to see.
cant say that is true but uhh
Tough fathers appeared post ww1
I agree. I think for fathers, some r still stern and it just all depends on the fathers personality and how ppl in the family see him.
My paternal grandmother was born in 1902, and she passed away in 1997.
The small boy on the beach was named Brian Alfred Passmore lived until 1985

I love seeing them looking real and having fun just like us, it makes me able to relate. Often in photos I think they look unreal, it feels so distant then.
Beautiful. It's incredible how normal this seems. The past is always a thing of the imagination and somehow unreal. I once saw footage of myself and family as a child in 1980: it's like watching a dream. That was on cine-film. Now, even camcorder footage looks old and like another world. Watching some footage news footage from the 1980s looks rather like a dream too today - and yet I was there.
People are people and have been so for over 100,000 years.
Charming and astounding videos from almost 120 years ago 😲….the great, great grandchildren of the children we saw may be around today. Restored with great skill and so real…thank you so much 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍😉
More like their grandchildren. I'm 84 so my grandfather could be in this and I could have known all the younger people in my own youth. My best friend in the 1950s was born in 1892.
@@MrCrowebobby Amazing Bobby 😲 Your best friend you mention was 20 years old…when the Titanic went down. "This short snapshot taken by pioneer amateur filmmaker Alfred Passmore is truly glorious, and one of the earliest known home movies in the world. Delightful. And can’t help noticing how slim everybody was back then compared to now.
There were plenty of overweight people all throughout the yrs.. just because not many happened to be shown here means nothing. I've seen lots in old films like this and in photos as well.

I just can`t get over the fact that I`m watching a family enjoying life more than 120 years ago... This father must have been in his 40s, so be might be born betweenm 1850 - 1860.... 1850!!!
THAT is just 50 years before Alexander Humboldt started his expedition. Or when Carl Friedrich Gauß died.
Have you ever read or heared about him and his work? If so, don`t you think all you`ve read seems to be so "far away"... but in fact it actually isn`t when I look at this footage.
Or all these kids... I look at them and think:"God damn.. I see these kids but know all of them are dead."
It reminds me how fast time can pass and that we should enjoy every second we get... like this family!
So charming.
Thank you from Scotland.
Wow that is amazing. I've never seen any old home videos like that before in my entire life.
Greetings from Ireland
The big wheel of life turns, but we live our existence just the same way our ancestors did, with its joys and sorrows. We do not dress exactly the same and we now talk to strange devices that we carry in our hand but we remain 99% the same. Generation after generation, life perpetuates itself. It's beautiful and humbling at the same time.
Yet, these people in 1902 did not know that 12 years later a horrible war would break out, followed by another one two decades later. These movies help us realize how fragile our happy simple lives are and I hope they will contribute to give us the wisdom to avoid another maddening war.
What a happy little family. Thank you for sharing this.
This looks as if it was filmed yesterday, the colour really brings them to life.

These videos are mesmerising in their simplicity, they make our past look like something near to us, and just thanks to the colours! I'm astonished.
I love these old clips of people having fun. My favourite is one of random adults getting into a snowball fight on a city street, having an absolute whale of a time.
Trivia: the snowball fight was actually a comedy film produced by the Lumière Brothers studio, and the people in it are studio employees who were recruited as amateur actors. But at least to me it looks like they were so much into the spirit of things they really didn't need to act their parts!

Amazing ❤️ Nice to see them laughing- usually in old photos everyone looks so stern.
I used to wonder if people actually did smile back then. Apparently they did!
@@SirLoinBeefsteak smiling in photographs didn't actually become a thing until the 20th century. People just wanted to look 'normal'. The first official presidential portrait to have the president smiling in it was Ronald Reagan's.
People look stern in old photos because exposure times were quite long, the person being photographed had to remain perfectly still or risk a blurry looking print. It's easier to keep a straight face for longer than it is to hold a static smile without looking odd. As film and shutter speed got quicker so did the option to smile.

AI generates additional frames between the existing frames to make it look smoother.
@@yedits4ya Exactly and it only needs to look and analyze the frames to predict where the new pixels are going to move. This way if there’s a man walking to the right it will predict that you need to make more frames in between moving to the right and then you can apply that to every single movement in the picture.
