EmuDeck, the app that makes emulating SUPER easy on Steam Deck, has now made its way over to Android. It's in an VERY EARLY Alpha state, but it's still a great look at what's to come, and will still make Android emulation way easier for me.

UPDATE: EmuDeck responded DIRECTLY to me 😅 czcams.com/users/shortsCTNl52VzzYc
Android is great for emulating. I like using my phone for Pokemon games especially-it's perfect for the quick 5 minutes that a phone works well for.
Pokémon heart gold ftw
Pokémon Black 2 ftw
DS games just kinda suck on a phone since having both screens on their make them pretty small and the touchscreen controls cover the DS screens
@@The_MEMEphisFr, that's why i bought the real ds, specifically the DS Lite and it's so cheap
@@zandatsu07 I think it's best to get a 3ds and mod it so you can play everything
I love EmuDeck on my Steam Deck. It was a painless process and made installing/configuring everything super simple. My Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is on its way, so EmuDeck seems like a great way to set it up once it is ready.
Only issue I have is hydro thunder. It's not on vim lair
Since cellphone companies won’t do it anymore can someone just put a micro sd card slot on one of those telescopic controllers already!?
To be fair, you would see slower read/write speeds due to reading/writing the data through a USB connection and an external device as opposed to the phone's onboard storage. Still, this would be cool to see at least attempted.
@@SlyAceZetaI doubt that it would make a difference if at all, most MicroSDs top out at around 100 MB/s, sometimes 300 MB/s if it's UHS-II, which for a USB 3 port, it won't be anywhere near the data limit of the port which is 5 GB/s.
@@SlyAceZetasdcards speeds are enough to load roms from.
@@bulletpunch9317Yeah I even play Cyberpunk from an sd card on my steam deck just fine. Not having hot swapable game libraries on over priced and over powerfull cellphones really grinds my gears.
@@Nova2127U they also have to power the devices and send/receive signals from the controller. So compatibility limitations could arise. Also there's im unaware if android itself can even support multiple devices at once, so it would have to be a single logic chip to manage both inputs and storage.
I just put emulation station on my android handheld yesterday. I wouldnt say its "easier" but it definitely looks alot cleaner. Once its setup, its much nicer, as its just a "pick system - pick game - play" vs like 10 taps to get something up. There might be 50 taps before, but 50 taps once is better than 10 taps each time.
I think I’ve probably said this before but thanks for keeping your sponsor sections so watchable
The reason emudeck can work well on the steam deck is probably partially because it is standardized hardware. With android I could see there being issues with different emulators and different versions of emulators working better for certain games on certain hardware.
10:55 AetherSX2 not launching straight into the game is caused by the emulator itself and not EmuDeck. The newest build that added the ads at the bottom also broke compatibility with launchers, even Daijisho and the new ES-DE for Android. To get the best version of AetherSX2 you actually need to roll back to the previous 3668 build, before they broke everything and shoved ads in
or patch it and just run NetherSX2.
This is so versatile, and very useful for most tablets and phones! Definitely gonna try this out for my games I have downloaded on my computer as well!
Can we stop and appreciate how Bob writes and stars in a literal one person play instead of your typical ad break? I really appreciate this aspect of your videos they always make me laugh.
His ads and Jomboy Warehouse ads are the only times I regret having the sponsorblock extension
💯
with emulation station now on android its awesome - just set up my odin with it and finally it feels like a console😊
What benefit does it provide? I want to understand. My emulators and games work without it.
@@Madblaster6 It makes everything pretty and organized, idk what there is to understand lol
@@Madblaster6 isn't necessary, just convenience
@@katsuLucas Thanks! I've just seen people saying it makes Android more usable and glorifying it. Wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
@@Madblaster6it also helps keep your settings consistent across emulators, manage emulator updates, and other quality of life features. I recommend the Retro Game Corps video on Emudeck Windows, because he goes over the capabilities there.
seems like its really cool.
i just ordered a retroid 4 pro, its my first dedicated emulation machine so im looking forward to trying out stuff on it
Yay! Been waiting for something like this
I have a Shield in my living room that I barely use these days. But I don’t have the time to install and set up individual emulators. I’ll be keeping an eye on this
Can't wait for this to get good. People always ask me about all my emulation handhelds and before recommending one to them, I first point out that their phone can probably emulate everything they want. But when I tell them they have to install a bunch of separate apps and configure everything, their eyes glaze over. This would make it so viable!
That throwaway line about the U2 album really raised the bar for ad segments
Oh nice. Finally 1 year as a member :D
I’m just gonna setup everything manually. Makes me feel smart and up to date on this stuff. But yeah for newer people to emulation handhelds absolutely streamline the experience and make it easier for the masses.
For a second, after the sketch for that ad, i forgot i came to see the actual video :)
I have a Retr. Pock 2S That really needs a better process/front end on it, because I may have fudged it up a bit on my initial setup. Only a few emulators were set up despite a large multi console library existing on my sd!
I DEFINITELY want to get more updates about this topic (emudeck) and Odin 2 setup.
Uh, for now anyway, this looks multiple times more complicated than "simply" installing your preferred emulators, configuring the controls, and then installing Daijisho (from the Play Store), which will automatically detect the emulators you installed. Then choose your roms folder, and then Daijisho downloads the box art for your roms, and... that's it?
I have never had luck with Retroarch so doesn't help me I guess. Was excited to make emulating on my phone with my Backbone a little easier too.
I miss Bob on the Nontendo podcast, so I'm watching his videos to get that Wulffiness I've grown accustomed to
The grading on this one is great.
i love playing gta on the psp via my phone!!! with a controller its actually so good!!!
We are gonna need an update video for the RP4 because I wanna get that one in the coming future for 3ds and nds games
The last phone I used for emulation was the SEX Play (Sony Ericsson Xperia Play). It was super fun because I had physical buttons and could play ps1 and n64 games on it.
I am now very ignorant on emulation, but might give it a try with my s24 ultra if the setup and interface is indeed as simple as they claim. I even carry a dualsense in my backpack so it wouldn't be that hard to play and with dex I could just plug it to a monitor at work or something.
What do you think of the GPD Win 4?
I'm trying to get a handheld that is a emulation beast but also can play Elden Ring on the go, and that seemed to have better hardware than the steam deck
Okay this is my thing. Do you set up EmuDeck first and then Emulation Station?
just started emulation, wonder if u maybe can compare emulation station and emudeck in both pc and android
cant wait for the 6 months later video to see if it has drastic (no pun intended) improved.
Reset collection is a pretty good frontend for android
Hey Bob, when you say that Emudeck is coming to Android, are you just referring to Android-based retro handheld devices, or is it also coming to Android phones where I could just use a Backbone?
Would you recommend doing this if my retroid 4 plus is already set with daijisho? This seems like a pain
On android use Dig as your front end and Retroach as for your cores. It's a similar experience.
I doubt a proper EmuDeck is even possible on Android. To many silly security rules and no root access makes application interoperability and file access VERY difficult.
So... what's the difference between using emulation station and pegasus? Just personal preference?
Thank you for not being sponsored by BetterHelp 😂
🤡
My analogue pocket and rg35xx+ have been amazing. My steam deck is great i use it with newer games snd love playing GTA on it but i never really emulate on the thing. I dont always like retroarch. Been considering a nice android handheld.
Im going to look into Emudeck. I literally only play earthbound on my steamdeck. Which im further in then i have ever got! I wonder if i can transfer saves between the two, or even from retroarch on the deck to retroarch on the rg35xx?
Hopefully emulation continues to become more user friendly. It was a pretty steep learning curve for me and I still don't find it to be a particularly enjoyable experience compared to just slotting a cart into an old system.
I can't and don't recommend emulating to friends but hopefully systems like emudeck continue to evolve to the point where I can.
On a related note, I'm going to try out my first FPGA (FP GBC), hopefully this is more in line with what I hope to get out of a modern retro experience.
Does anybody know the song in the sponsor segment?
Hmm... maybe I should use EmuDeck on the Ayaneo Flip DS when it arrives
I personally prefer to chose my emulators and configure them separately.
Here's my picks: snesx9 ex+, gba.emu, md.emu, flycast, m64plus fz pro, duckstation, ppsspp, drastic, citra, nethersx2, dolphin mmjr2, Skyline Mr Purple fork.
I use ES thru batocera on an old laptop. Love the bitboy theme
I use my Z Fold 5 to play all my old Gameboy games. Almost through Fire Red
Are you going to be reviewing the RG35XX-H?
Doesn’t Lemuroid do this already? Not sure how you’re going to get over the not setting up but though. Steam deck is standardised hardware, phones can have touch screens or a large variety of different controllers, unless it’s going to auto detect every single one of them and apply the button config for each properly. Lemuroid tries to do it, but I still have to do fine tuning for each one anyway. As well as maybe making some individual emulator changes.
I still find it best to simply download each emulator separately though, they have more features and are the latest versions, while these ‘all in one apps’ sometimes have outdated versions. More of a hassle but better in the long run.
I hate watching ads. but for this guy. I will. hope he makes money
Is it the same as the one on Amazon Apps?
WAIT. I thought this was just another video of EmulationStation coming to android, which already was big news yesterday
I thought so too, another one of those, "OMG GUYS, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!", oh, its a $6 frontend that isnt kinda just okay but not enough to get me to switch over from Daijisho.
Would this work on the Nvidia Shield Pro?
Hey were you in Walmart a few days ago ? I think I saw you. But I couldn’t remember the CZcams name at the time to say hi. Cause I couldn’t believe it. 😅 I didn’t think anyone on CZcams would visit my town. Alright later.
can you make a vid about your top 5 favourite emulation handhelds?
Bob did the 5 best handhelds for 2023 at the end of 2023 if that helps.
@@davidchan7860 oh ok
Years ago i never thought we would have cooll emulator like these on androids but seeing these emulators even the switch is still mindblowing to me on android, mobox is the coolest one though
I am going to wait till I get a new set up my s10e works great for what I need.
THIS IS A BREAKTHROUGH IN EMULATION! IM SO EFFING HAPPY EMUSTATION IS GONNA BE OUT ON ANDROID!
Ok, so this confirmed my thoughts
Wait for the Retroid Pocket 5 and for emu deck to launch on Android
For someone who uses so many different emulation devices, what do you use to unify game save states or save files? Do you just have different states on each device?
I dont think he actually plays anything. He pretty much installs emulators and roms on a new device every week so he can make a video about it. Like i dont think during his downtime hes sitting there grinding away at Animal Crossing or something.
@@z0h33y true, I believe him testing these devices is ultimately probably just as interesting to him as their gaming use, but I've always wondered if there's some kind of cloud solution for game states
@@softpillowcase You can just move the saves to the other device along with your roms. Or you can set the save folder on a GoogleDrive and have cloud saves.
Syncthing is a solution. You can unify your savestates between PC and emu consoles easily. It requires just the time to configure how the file sync and you can basically forget it.
The more options the merrier. The one that means the least amount of work is likely to come out on top.
I just use the games launcher built into my one plus. Works well enough.
I am a launchbox guy so I stick wit that. It is epic and super easy, barely an inconvenience!
Did Retroid never actually grab a retail unit and try to use it before shipping?
If this is "button software being weird" it should happen with every RP4 out there... How would they not catch it before launch?
I feel like this is worse than bad QA... more like no QA at all
can you enable it to auto-start on boot rather than opening the app every time? (like a Raspberry-pi)??
Autoboot on steam deck? Or Android? If you mean steam deck you can do it on both Windows and Linux
So the same as daijisho?
Wait emudeck is just on pc as well?
04:00 if u want to actually get to the video start
Will PS3 or 360 emulation ever come to android?
You got me. I wanna buy a oled Steam deck
even my miyoo mini plus handheld has image scraping on it
Watching and taking notes right now 😂
Theres also reteoarch but pwlersonally i think its terrible i tried it on pc and vita and it took like a hour just to get a gameboy game going and it didnt run great
My only hope is that the emu deck will be able available for android handheld devices including Logitech G devices. Am I right? 😎🤞🏾🙏🏾
If only Bob had a spreadsheet instead of scraps to keep track of bills
Hey I'm so lucky. I recently started to use my old Galaxy A70 for emulation 😂😂😂
speaking of emulation on android, it might be helpful if you used your position to encourage (bully) AYN into finally releasing an update to unlock the bootloader on the original Odin models. You know, since they kind of promised they would, and then abandoned all support for the device before following through.
“I’m sure that most of you watching this already know what you’re doing”
Dude I’m not even sure how I got to work.
Trying to streamline emulation is what I think that makes it harder
I feel like ES-DE was easier to set up on its own without using emudeck. I had none of those problems using that. The only thing I don’t like about it is it wants you to put the roms in the directories it creates and on a system that’s already been set up that’s kind of annoying. It won’t let you specify the rom folder for each system.
I expected this to be about the Amazon version of the app 😅 definitely feels like a strange video to have with the Amazon app being available
It's this coming to the Nvidia Shield?? I bought this thing FOR emulation, but man I could never get the hang of Retro Arch. :/
someone educate me on what the difference is between retroarch and emudeck
EDIT: oops i didn't finish watching the video. but it just seems like a more convenient retroarch?
This process better get a lot cleaner. I didn't have to do all this on my steamdeck. Im not doing it on my android devices either. So I'll wait until it's seamless like the deck or I'll skip it.
The smoothest brain take
@@user-to1su2iy4dyes you have a smooth brain. thanks for sharing. Your smooth brain does not change the fact I am not doing all that when i did not have to on my deck. They will change it or else I will not have it. You think i am the only one? ok.
@@user-to1su2iy4dthere are already way more seamless ways to emulate on android that work fine. good day sir.
@@user-to1su2iy4dtry to get your smooth brain checked out. Sounds painful.
Try to get your smooth brain checked out.
I like Android on Emulation handhelds when they have touch screens, when they don't have touch screens it becomes annoying to navigate Android (because Android is designed for touch screen smartphones, tablets, watches, and car screens).
I still definitely prefer JELOS and getting devices supported by it, but this seems nice to have for other devices anyway.
Holy smokes is that penguinz0?
Not really, since still need to set up the emulators. Not the same yet as PC and Deck. Still a ways to go.
"How's my little asshole look" Bob, 2017, playing Marry-O Party. Go play again with MDB and crew, good times. Sorry it's the rules I was told to post this here in the past and now I must every time.
My Galaxy Z fold is an Emulation Beast
I know you are a gaming channel, but you have a nice coffee bar setup. Can you do some coffee content, please?
Anyone try this on a CFW Switch?
Frontend launch was intentionally broken on Aethersx2 by the developer after he had a meltdown. Partially due to toxic people threatening him and partially because he couldn't help himself from going down and playing in the mud as well instead of ignoring them. Using an older version of Aethersx2 fixes this or using the Nethersx2 patch which enables front end support back and also provides new fixes for some games automatically. Drastic Launch is also broken on newer versions of Android, I believe the dev has to fix it again.
I have an Odin Pro loaded up with daijisho and all the emulators configured so I won't be using Emudeck but... I hated the setup process, I hated how long it took and I hate how android complicates things. I hated it so much that I just refuse to buy another android based device. Emuelec, Amberelec, Batocera... these things still require configuration but it's so much easier that for now I'll just stick with linux handhelds. Emudeck in its current state, doesn't sound appealing because you're still jumping through setup hoops but if it can simplify things in the future to the point where I can load it up and it actually just loads and configures (almost) everything for me I will consider another android device like a Retroid or the Odin 2. Till then, I'll wait.
Do you even play these games though?
I don’t know what I’m doing I should have never bought the retroid pocket 4 pro
I have no problem doing it all manually because I know it will be done RIGHT.
If a tool can actually do it right and save me all that damn time... sign me up!
I feel frontends are too hard, I like to set it up manually, and retroarch imo looks better anyway
i like making my devices look like a games console interface lol
Awesome
I was watching this with automatic captions and its so funny how those just dont know how to parse EmuDeck, either making it 'muck' or 'muud'
Hoping for cloud saves!!
I honestly think these type of apps, although great, only creates more "dumb users" with lack of curiosity and fills forums and discord servers with questions that are easily solved.
nothing says TEACHING MOMENT more than learning what are you doing, why are you doing it and what happens if you do it wrong.
I see it as a good thing tbh, more people playing retro games isnt a bad thing and there's always people who are happy to help them out
