We are five years into a seven year effort of transforming 20 acres of "Piney Grove" in Northwest Florida into our dream homestead/mini farm to be filled with animals and joy. We plan to have a variety of miniature critters on our pastures, raise free-range chickens, grow fish in our pond, garden organically, plant fruit and nut trees, and harvest wild game. Really appreciate these videos, Brad. I just finished the project that finally convinced my wife we need a tractor, and it was similar. 2100 sq ft of 3/4 drain rock over 7/16 minus base. This involved rough/finish grading, digging to extend a drainage culvert and moving some fencing. I used 23.5 tons (full transfer truck load) of each type of rock, and I'm still a bit light on the top dressing. This series of videos was tremendously helpful to watch beforehand, as I had always used the box blade to spread instead of back blading. The float function is a hero in this application, though I will say that finishing with the box blade will get you that clean edge you are after. Thank you!

I think the win was "convinced the wife we need a tractor"! Glad the videos helped. Thanks for watching.

Bucket float also works well to counteract rough ground grading. With a static loader position, any time ANY wheel dips into a minor depression in your surface, it will be reflected or even amplified in the grading at the loader bucket position. One comment on the 'trying to get surface perfect' issue. It reminds me of the cartoon of a project graph at a manufacturing company where the line was showing slow but steady project development over time. About three quarters through, the line shot up to 100 percent successful completion. One of the board members asked what happened there, and the reply was , that's when we got rid of the engineers, implying, they were spending more time getting it perfect than getting it built. As an engineer, I always remembered that in my work. :-)

Hi Brad It looks like you are doing well with the loader bucket, float is very useful for smoothing. By now you should be done with the PT for the shoulder, how is it doing?

Great video and new sub here! Just found your channel. Question: Where did you get your metal shop building? Seems like there are a ton out there but i like your configuration with the extended roof gable making a sort of a covered shed/entrance for the shop. ✝

Asphalt millings were $300 a truck load and we bought 15 loads four years ago for our driveway. They are now $1100 a load!! That is triple the price. Inflation is real! Thanks for watching!!

@@PineyGroveHomestead that's insane! You spent $4,500 and now if you wanted to do it somewhere else in your property it will cost you $16,500. That's some price hike!

@@carmenmariacortesmarin2664 At the time, they were resurfacing a road near Piney Grove, so they were cheap to get. That's the time to get them and stockpile them because it helps the road crew get rid of them. When there's no road work close by, you have to buy them from a gravel yard who bought them, transported them, stored them, and have to transport to you. My "dirt guy" says the price of truck tires has tripled as has his liability insurance!!
