Lady and the Tramp is a 2019 American musical romance film directed by Charlie Bean and written by Andrew Bujalski and Kari Granlund, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is a live-action adaptation of Walt Disney’s 1955 animated film of the same name, which was based on the Cosmopolitan magazine story of "Happy Dan, the Cynical Dog" by Ward Greene. The film stars Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux as the voices of the titular characters.

Good now after watching this, thank Doug!
Hope you review this and The Lion King (2019) for a Nostalgia Citric episode.
On the plus side Disney did use rescue animals for the film. So I'll give them that must.
Can’t wait to see the Ryan’s pitch meeting to this glorified pitch meeting
I think Disney might actually be doing something The nostalgia critic satirized with the Lorax.
Where everybody goes to see the live action movies because of nostalgia but there’s no substance to the movie says the return to the original animated movies. They could theoretically next year coming up announce that the animated lion King, Aladdin, beauty and the beast, and Lady and the tramp are all coming out of the Disney vault with new DVD sets.
They need it to be popular so everyone would go see them, but they needed to be bad so they would return to the originals.
The fact this went straight to Disney+ and not to theatres says it all, really. These live-action remakes are the modern-day equivalent of all those straight-to-video Disney sequels, just with higher budgets.
Bitch of it is I'd rather watch these than those sequels (looking at you Mulan 2), rather sad how that is the best thing going for these remakes...
I thought the same thing!!
This movie was made to advertise Disney+. If + didn’t exist, you could bet your ass this would be sent to theaters (with a higher budget).
at least the DVD sequels were original and sometimes good
@@jmurray1110 Key word being _sometimes._

As someone who works with dogs, dogs actually do lick like that when they're stressed. It's called a "Stress lick" It's when their tounge doesn't come out of their mouth. Although I think this dog just did it on accident.
*The more you know*
They really had to think hard to come up with that term 🤣
At least, the dogs have more expressions than The Lion King remake...
My balongne sammich has more emotion than Discovery Channels Lion King.
Ha nice
I totally agree. That's one thing I liked about this. That the dogs actually have expression..
Not really I don't think the dogs have any expressions
Yes
The spaghetti scene in the original is one of the most romantic Disney moments. In this version you just realise how ridiculous it is that a restaurant owner is giving his best food and entertainment to two dogs!
Is it confirmed that he's the owner? I assumed he was just a waiter.
I thought it was cute. It was ridiculous even in the animated version. Especially since nowadays it's more common knowledge to not give your dog spaghetti and other human food unless specifically recommended by your vet. It was just a cute scene to pamper the dogs and try to create a romantic atmosphere for them
Only the very best for dogs dude

Maybe that's the secret conspiracy. The live action makes you appreciate the old movie more.

Quite a high budget commercial to make people subscribe to Disney+ with the nostalgia (and The Mandalorian) as the only selling point.

I mean, Disney still markets the animated versions of their Disney films while the live-action stuff is barely even mentioned.
Maybe the real live action remake was the animated movie we made along the way

The reason, Doug, why the original version had such grand animation is two reasons. One is: it was the first of the Disney animated movies to be shot in Cinemascope. So, they had to make it look great. The second is: it was very much a Walt movie. This was one of his favorites. Even though it is technically based on two other stories (one side being his animator, Joe Grant's actual story of his dog and his wife's baby), Walt was pretty involved with it and became a big project for him. Not to mention, a lot of the lead artists and animators worked on it. I mean, Eyvind Earl, Frank Thomas, Claude Coats... these are people who were saved for the really, really, artistic and beautiful things. So even if the story doesn't feel big - it's not based off of a fairy tale or a novel or anything huge - that's why the animation feels so important.
It looks more like Netflix production, not something Disney produced themselves, even on Disney’s streaming service, it’s not even featured as other movies!
Matt R well Disney+ is a streaming service so
It was featured a lot when Disney+ first came out. I remember it was atop the cycling featured programs at the top.
MrGabeanator but it feels like an outside production company made this, even though it’s considered Disney.
Th.El.Co._1 probably at launch. I got Disney+ early December, and now the Mandalorian and newer originals are featured due to better viewership.
Netflix productions are better than this.
2:05 Yes, Dog often lick their lips as a sign of Stress, Fear or Anxiety. So if a dog was put in this scenario they would lick their lips
Doug's point was, they show Dogs talk and act like human beings. And that doesn't mix with the a Dog's typical behaviour. They did it right in the animated version, because they could animate the dogs accordingly. Here, it just distracts, because it clashes.
@@Haterator Wasn't distracting at all.

@That One I love how you just assume he's from the USA right off the bat.
They could have kept the song pretty much the same and gotten rid of the accents. Siamese cats are a breed after all. But no, they changed it instead and it is worse for it.
@That One I just listened to the original, they barely would have needed to change the song. They could have used an american accent or found one or two singers who were legitimately Asian (the cats were from China and then brought to Thailand I believe). Not much truly needed to be changed.
Didn't even realize that they had already made this, thought it was coming out next year.

That's... really depressing...
In my book, it's the best of the lot, next to "Dumbo"!
Jake Bob Aladdin Lion King Lady and the tram, Dumbo. What’s the fifth
Trina Q nice joke
The original was done from the perspective of the dogs. We almost never say human faces; most of the time it was just the legs and feet, like in the scenes you showed. We see things at the floor level because that's where Lady is. Lady hears the people talking about things that have to do with Darling's pregnancy, but they never say "baby." (She's only explained this by her dog friends.) The women tell Darling that she looks radiant, the men joke to Jim Dear that the doctor hasn't lost a father yet. It was so cleverly done.
Also, it's ironic that the movie remake acts as though people of different races were not treated differently, where as in the original, the DOGS had a strong sense of class difference amongst themselves. Even Jock called the Tramp a "mongrel," which actually sounds like a slur (although I know it isn't).
I didn't even know this remake was a thing

Yvette Nicole brown is aunt Sarah? Honestly you can never go wrong with Helen
I like Yvette Nicole Brown a lot, but it’s not worth watching if she’s the only interesting character.
didn’t enjoy the character tbh
Funny story, the head animators at Disney were really really excited about the original Lady in the Tramp when they were making it. They absolutely loved movies about animals and put a ton of thought into their characterization. Some of these same people felt that Bambi was their masterpiece. That would explain the high quality, in case that was still a mystery.
One thing I liked about this more than the '55 film was that Lady was less of a pushover and she and Tramp broke up on more amicable terms; they just didn't think they could work as an item because they came from two different worlds. Also, it gave Tramp more of a backstory: He was neglected and abandoned by his previous owners because they had a baby and he didn't want that to happen to Lady.
It still blows!!
In the words of Cosmodore
"Oh yeah, that was a thing"
They're doing like in Beauty and the Beast where the smartest guy in the town was the only black guy, and there were two interracial couples amongst the castle servants in an era when that was not at all common. Disney has been pandering to minority groups in their recent films by forcing people of color where their presence makes no sense. It's an attempt for Disney to say, "Hey look! We're not racist anymore!" while unwittingly coming off as a bit condescending in the way they pander. They want to maximize profit by making as many people happy as possible, and that's really what this is about. Believe me, the Disney execs don't give a damn about equality in their films outside of how their show of inclusiveness will net more profit from those who are fooled by such things.
@@beethovensfidelio Yeah, and Wakanda is science fiction, but everyone who lives in it needs to be POC
It's because these movies are just remakes of movies made in different times, representativeness in movies wasn't a big deal to film makers (big deal to film makers=cash grab), so there wasn't almost any character If not white people, what is not compatible to recent times.

Yep! I could see the kind of ethnicity in The Princess and the Frog. It took place in the south and was an original story (well, the first time Disney got ahold of it anyway). You don't take an already established story that Disney or someone else already released as a movie in some form and change the ethnicity and sometimes even the genders of the characters.
I just want to say, The dogs are adorable
The only reason I would give this one a chance is because all the real life dogs used in it are rescue dogs. That's amazing.

@@dovenightingale2779 The live-action version of Lady and the Tramp takes place in Atlanta, Georgia. The Deep South. Legal or not, this kind of racial mix would have been severely frowned upon at that time and place.
I know that no one actually watched this movie, so most likely no one cares how inaccurate it is, but because it comes from Disney, you can't help but think that they modernized a historical period on purpose for 2019 audiences.
I feel like the reason why these live-action remakes are existing are because Disney wants to push their audience back to the original classics that made them so special. It's nothing personal. Just movie business.
My pet peeve (no pun intended) is that Tramp doesn’t call Lady “pidge” in this version. In fact he never calls her Lady at all in the original. I always thought that was cute and endearing

That show was the first where i thought the cg/anime style worked.
@@KingPrintmaker I actually am not sure what you entirely mean. didn't the Canadian studio that animated storm hawks also do trox uprising? they seem very similar.
@@USSAnimeNCC- i think what really did it was a lack of interest in Tron. No one was really buying the toys which is what really funds these shows. I really liked it because not only did the show look cool, but there was a real sense of danger since characters would be killed, maybe not the main characters but they would be injured, but the side characters certainly will be killed.
It took watching this movie for me to suddenly realize that there's a suspicious lack of human characters in the original. Like, a human character will show up when the plot calls for it, but there are never any extras just going about their day in the background.
I didn't notice it before, but I think it works in the original because it keeps the story focused on the dogs. I found the new version oddly distracting, not because of the unrealistic representation of poc for that time period, but because all the people in general made the movie feel way more cluttered, and occasionally took focus off of Lady and Tramp
Jim Dear and Darling confronting Aunt Sarah was one of my favorite add ons as well as the scene when Tramp get's abounded. Those are for sure the best scenes in the movie
Two things:
1) This film is out now?
2) How come I didn’t know about this?
Plotwist: The live action movies are made to make us appreciate the originals and boost those, rather than themselves.
Honestly.....this was actually the first remake I genuinely enjoyed. The voice acting and the interactions between Lady and Tramp were very charming. The human actors may have been just ok....but that's pretty much how the humans were in the original too. Technically speaking, they gave the humans A LOT more character in this one than the original.
I AGREE, FINALLY I FOUND SOMEONE WHO AGREES, THIS IS NOT THAT BAD OF A LIVE ACTION FOR DISNEY STANDARDS!
"Would an emotional heartbroken dog do that?" Did you seriously complained about THAT!??
Dogs lick their lips when they're anxious and fearful, so yes, that would be an accurate usage of that body language.
How I know they missed the point: Constant shots of peoples faces. The original tried very hard to shoot things from a dog's POV, you almost never saw people above the knees in any detail. It was hugely important to the tone and atmosphere.
Nobody can EVER replace the original - with quite talented radio player Barbara Luddy as Lady and a funny guy and actor Larry Roberts (info on him per the historian par excellence Keith Scott) .
One of the best things about the old version is the "camera angle" when the dogs are around almost everything is shown at a low vantage point half the movie is just the humans legs. While we do see Jim Dear and Darling's faces you don't see them long enough to really remember them in detail. It's all about Lady's world and what she sees. The only reason we see a lot of Aunt Sara's face is to establish that she is sort of the bad guy in the film and we see the Italian singers to set the mood. From what I see of this new film they seem to showcase the humans more which is why the ethnic diversity really stands out to some viewers. The movie shouldn't be about the humans but the dogs we should be seeing the world through their eyes not the humans.
I'm confused about why they kept to the same time period as the original. They had a more diverse cast and that's cool but why shove that into a historical setting where that probably wouldn't be the case? At least not without issues present at the time. They should have just set the story in the present day where the diverse cast would make much more sense and it would be a big change to the story. Probably not enough to justify the remake but they were already set on it so whatever.
Should have been like the 1996 101 Dalmatians remake and have the animals not talk. That would ha been interesting.
I love that both Shirley and Chang from Community are in this.
Maybe they have a kid in this Universe as well.
Disney uses all this live-action remakes to just show off. They tell the other studios "Look what we can do! We have the best technology in the world! If we want we can destroy you!". That is the only explanation I can think for all this remakes.
Well thanks to them we hav that tech. Like the de-aging they done. They done it so many times that it's becoming cheaper to do because more are able to do it now
@@bryzantine1571 Yes, Pixar made something alike with its animations. As bad as remakes like The Lion King can be, they at least improve the special effects market
Only reason i'd ever watch this is to get my dog to bark at the TV
I just love how the cats go from Chinese in the original, to randomly being rappers in this
I hated how they seemed to forget that most people can read dog body language - happy = tail wag, sad = tail between legs, play poses etc. They spent so much effort animating smiles and crap when we don't need a dog to smile to know it's happy. Homeward Bound was made over 20 years ago and managed to make batter use of dogs just being dogs without needing all the technology
on the upside at least they didn't insult us with a theatrical release like Lion King
I love that these remakes are all overruling some of Doug’s original “meh” reviews of movies most people already loved from 2011
Face it, Disney lost their heart. This is why HTTYD3 should win the Oscar award for Best Animated Feature.
Or Klaus. That movie deserves so much more recognition than it's currently getting.
@@Frozen_Death_Knight As long as Toy Story 4 or Frozen 2 doesn't win. The previous entries already robbed DreamWorks' chances in the past, so why should their unnecessary cash-grabs they call sequels do it again when DreamWorks completed the greatest animated trilogy of all time? Disney's a *Fascist!*
For me, the big problem with this film is the changes made just feel random. Scenes are cut and rearranged seemingly without any rhyme or reason, often at the expense of character motivation and development. The pacing is also really rushed, moving at about the same pace as the original, even though it's longer. I will admit, the opening credits, the spaghetti scene, the scene in the pound, and the fight with the rat are well done, and the acting is okay (though the actress who plays Darling should never sing again), but it's not enough to save this film.
Just seeing the clip at 0:20 makes me realize that the creators didn't understand the source material. In the original, you never see humans above the waist in order to see them from a dog's point-of-view. Here, you see their faces constantly.
I actually felt this was the best of the live actions. I liked it.
"Would an emotional, heartbroken dog do that?!" Actually, yes, in some extent as lip licking out of context can be a sign of discomfort or any negative emotion.
I will always remember the end of the original movie with the rat sneaking into the house during a thunderstorm? That was freaking terrifying. It was so well done. It was JUST a RAT but they really pulled it off as this big dramatic scary thing...now that's GOOD directing.
Screw this remake lol
My god, what if this was Disney’s plan all along?! To make shitty remakes to make people love the originals even more?
Deuce Moncura dude relax, I was joking.
This is one of the better live action remakes...which sadly isn't saying much.
How could they remove the iconic zoo scene from this remake?
The only part that I like is when the doctor says "Yeah, your baby is the most beautiful baby out of the 200 babies I've helped deliver," in this sarcastic tone.
Here's a strange thing about the Lady and the Tramp live action movie. It was directed by Charlie Bean, a guy who is usually associated with cartoons. He was an artist for Tiny Toon Adventures, Ren and Stimpy, Batman the Animated Series, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Animaniacs, the Critic, Shnookums and Meat, Timon and Pumbaa, Dexter's Laboratory, I Am Weasel, Cow and Chicken, Powerpuff Girls 1998, and Johnny Bravo. He also directed Robotboy and the Lego Ninjago Movie and he even wrote the Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends episode "The Buck Swaps Here" and the Spongebob episode "The Two Faces of Squidward". He was also the creator of the What a Cartoon short "Buy One Get One Free". So how the heck did he end up directing this movie?
I wished it was released in theaters so that the box office would plumit

Best choice of words ever said Doug.
There was just far too much focus on the human characters. The 1955 movie was told entirely from the dogs' perspective. We saw hands and legs because that's how dogs see people, when two humans were interacting we just saw how the dogs right acted to it. Here we frequently leave the dogs' world and see humans discuss matters while the dogs just wait at the bottom of the screen until we can return to their eye level. x
Should note. An emotionally heartbroken dog would do that.
I've seen my dog do that whenever he got disappointed or even when he accidentally got hurt.
(It didn't happen often. I'm not a monster. I was just a reckless child!)
The original, while it wasn’t one of the Disney films I liked, it did help when I got a new baby sister. It honestly helped since lady goes through what I did.
I love how most of the comments are about not even knowing about this movie or that it was already released. This pleases me.
We have regressed so far that In 2019, just BEING a Siamese cat is racist.
That One I have one, they do have slanted eye sockets but no buck teeth, the buck teeth problem was already fixed in lady and the tramp 2 and house of mouse. The point is why did they have to change the cat breed.
@That One Take your SJW nonsense elsewhere. There has never been anything morally wrong about caricature. You keep telling people that "caricature is racist" is something that should be taught in schools, when history classes should be used for education, not social indoctrination.
The Siamese cats from the original film were harmless fun. Nobody who watched that film started hating Asians because of it, or even thought any less of them. Disney castrates its own content to appease authoritarian busybodies like you, who falsely claim moral high ground and are never satisfied anyway.
So please do us all a favor and save us the indignation. We don't care what you have to say, nor should anyone.
@That One That is interesting. What horrific trauma could you have gone through to join the dark side and become a joyless SJW scold?
@That One Look at yourself. You're jumping into random comment threads saying "That's racist, bigot". It's not a side you join, it's just the way of life you chose.
Comparing me to an SJW is laughable, by the way. They want to shut people down, get them fired, police free speech, when I want none of those things. I want Disney to keep making bland, politically correct movies to their black heart's content, and I'm not about to interfere with their right to do so.
@That One You are a master study in dodging the question.
Every live action remake convinces me further that the entire point of them is to make people go watch the originals again.
Like literally every single time.i see a live action remake I get an hour in and without fail think to myself "man I really wanna watch the original *insert title here* "
I listened to their new version of He’s a Tramp and it felt like they took the soul out of it, like instead of a song from a character the new the tramp it by a character who’s just heard of him and what he’s done rather than experienced it

I am so weirded out by how Lady's ears move when they go back to the cgi model.
Well...the dogs are more expressive than the lion king remake
A little.
that moment when I didn't even know this movie existed
I literally had no idea this was a thing until just now
the original Lady and the Tramp is basically just Disney doing a good RomCom and I find that really enjoyable - no it's not some epic adventure but its not supposed to be and the characters are all charming enough to make it a really fun watch
It's like those Air bud spin offs but with a budget
Ngl, this is one of my favorites of the live action remakes
Oh hey rainbow, nice to see you here :) haha, I refuse to watch this one, LATT holds a special place in my heart. It doesn’t look any better than some of the other ones I’ve seen. Let’s just hope they never remake Zootopia in the future, I wouldn’t put it past them!
AshHoppsMusic nice to see you too :) and yeah, a Zootopia remake would be terrible. Who knows they probably would make wildehopps canon in the remake lol
AshHoppsMusic yeah, if there is a sequel, I just really hope they don’t make it canon. It’s just better if they stayed just as best friends
AshHoppsMusic agreed, shippers ruin everything
Disney used to be all about magic, but now it feels like it's all about money.
