My story is like many other professors I think: total technophobe, no way I'm ever going to make videos etc., then the pandemic hit. I finished the spring 20 semester attempting to "teach" using zoom to do traditional lectures, and it was a horrible failure. The students just turned their cameras off and left. In addition, with some faculty accessibility training in the summer of '20, it became clear that captioned video communication was the only ADA compliant way to present math-rich material due to a lack of accessibility tools geared toward math/physics, and Zoom's captions were unacceptable (but YT's captions were excellent). I decided that (a) doing traditional lectures over zoom is worthless and (b) communicating short lectures and solutions to quiz/test/practice problems will require videos.
I ended up making about 1000 YT videos in the 20-21 academic year. My online courses have weekly modules with roughly 5 short (less than 10 minutes) "lecture + example" videos tightly edited for fast pacing, then zoom was used only for problem solving sets (with YT video solutions provided after), and all solutions to quizzes and tests were also posted to YT. I am so happy I stumbled into this world -- it's such a cool opportunity to share math and physics not just with my students, but with the entire world.
To those who feel too intimidated to start uploading (and 99% of my colleagues are in this category): know that you will suck. I know that *my* first couple hundred videos suck. Accept that you will suck at first, and use every self-criticism to inspire improvement in your content. There are so many complications as you get started: technical, emotional, social, that will ruin your videos, but all of this just gradually improves as your YT skill set, with every failure leading to improvement. I've tried to convince some of my colleagues to get on board with making our college a big CZcams presence across disciplines, but I've had no success due primarily to their fear of criticism and secondarily to plain laziness. As a result, they continue to deliver regurgitated zoom lectures that don't work. This is ironic, because we always tell our students that making mistakes is a powerful way to learn, then so many of us model the avoidance of making mistakes!
I'm actually back in the classroom this Fall, but my classes are transformed: lecture time is just group problem-solving time (and hands on physics lab time), and I've jettisoned the traditional lecture by using YT to give short, tightly edited chunks asynchronously with mandatory short online concept quizzes. I always wanted to "flip" the classroom because the data is very strong that the traditional lecture just doesn't work. So . . . there's one silver lining to pandemic.

When you put it like that it almost sounds like it's the teachers responsibility to become a CZcamsr, instead of just some fun thing to do. This makes me warm up more to the idea of becoming a CZcamsr, since I think I may eventually become a Professor.

@@DhansakPuzzles It's not so much the "artistic skills", but the fact that you use lots of interesting background imagery. When scrolling your channel, it doesn't feel like there's just 100 thumbnails of the same exact thing, if that makes sense. However, your titles and descriptions need more work.
I've got some ideas to give! Just for the fun of it honestly :) I would love to help out small quality channels

I think this has given me the push to actually start uploading. It's very tough to get started, knowing that my channel will get drowned into the sea of fantastic content that's already out there. However, I think you are correct in saying that now is the best time to start :)
I wish to ask a very important question, more related to math and studying it than YT. How do I get over the anxiety of "not being good enough"? I feel like my first year mathematics at university has been extremely challenging, because it's hard to know how much of the material I should be understanding immediately. I know that many people have said that the first year or two were difficult, but when you look back to it later in your studies, you realize how it has all gotten easier.
Anyone can feel free to answer, I will try to reply to all thoughtful answers :)
In terms of posting on CZcams, just keep posting, the confidence will come later! In terms of math, just know that everyone feels like an impostor, even though they don’t say it, so you’re definitely not alone

Starting the third year on mathematics as well, and feeling the same yet again.
I love this channel, is not like "taking classes", is more about solving puzzles, and curiosities, it's a commumity to enjoy maths in a funny way, you have a talent to explain it.

How do you keep track of what video topics you've covered? I have been making videos on the go for the past year and a half and didn't make a great system for organizing my videos (which I'm doing now that I have +100 videos uploaded).
Also do you have any advice for channels such as mine with around four digit subscribers?

There should be an infinite number of solutions that can be found by an equation (y = …) that can be made from this one. The question is what is the equation.
There should only x’s on the other side

I actually wanted to make a video about my new favorite mind bending function, but I really don't know if I should...
But anyway, just imagine, a function that has derivative 0, is continues and also is a one-to-one function (we are probability students so we don't really mention "almost everywhere" but it is implied for derivative 0).
Note, the Cantor function isn't a one to one function because it is constant at some places (almost in all places to be exact :)).

I've always thought of compiling all the little projects and niche internet rabbit holes I would go down on a separate youtube channel from this account of my own, walking through the problems and concepts I encountered in a similar manner that you do with mathematics on your channel, just to see how many people would watch and how well I could film and present something I was passionate about.
That being said, I have a challenge to you. I've devised a calculus problem that none of my fellow peers or professors at A&M have been able to tackle yet. It involves Mario saving Lumas from Bowser's captivity in space, and doesn't need much more than basic calc 2 knowledge and a bit of outside math knowledge to solve. I won't give anything away in this comment section, but lmk if you want to accept my challenge and we can dm/meet up to discuss the full details of the problem and the possible reward!
