Stealth camping in an F150 truck camper

- This is a hyperlapse of installing my modular
camper cabinets. I built this myself using scrap timber, mostly unused floorboards left over from a colleague's home renovation. I'd love to buy a big RV, but we're saving to one day buy a house of our own. This truck is my every day driver.
No fancy tools are needed to put the cabinets together, just one g-lamp and a bunch of long 1/4 inch bolts with wing nuts. Nothing is permanently attached to the truck. Installing it is a one-person job, nothing is particularly heavy to lift. I frequently remove the cabinets when i need to transport large furniture in the back.
The unit is divided into 4 main sections: the base cabinet, bench top, back shelf, & upper shelving unit.
The bench top is separate from the cabinet base to keep everything light enough for me to lift. I used a pile of thick 1ft length floorboards for the bench top, other mismatched floorboards to cover the cabinets, and 2x4 lumber riddled with nails, staples & broken screws that had to be extracted.
I will upload more videos of the build as soon as I get a chance. I'm new to uploading videos on CZcams, my apologies if I'm not very quick or handy at replying to questions or comments. - Jak na to + styl
It’s so refreshing to see a clean person take off their shoes before going into their camper bed 😌
This is an intro to truck camping video. Seriously, this person could teach a whole course on camper builds, I bet. And this is just a one sided shelf build! Id like to see a one person plus a dog buildout. Great work! And thanks for the silence...
I'm doing the same thing with my Silverado. Shelf to the top of one side, and until now, I haven't found another on CZcams... I'm mostly seeing the raised deck with drawers which I didn't want with the low cap. This build was great, HOWEVER...
If anyone is considering doing this I would swap the "floor-plan" so that the bed is on the passenger side and the shelves are on the driver's side...
When you are on the road and "shoulder checking" for a lane change, or even backing into wooded areas, you will look over your right shoulder and out the passenger side windows. This setup would block your view whereas flipping it would put the obstructed window behind the driver. The truck would also "feel" much more open and stock while driving down the road vs. the closed in "box-truck" feel. My 2 cents. ;-)
I like the idea of keeping the passenger side "open". Now if only I could find someone to build for me.........
@@shelenashares3640 - There's a lot of talented people out of work right now... Barter is always a way to go if cash is an issue. I just swapped the transmission in my elderly neighbor's car and as payment, his kid is shingling my garage as I type this... Win/Win! =)
Good luck with your project.

So, I’ve spent much of my free time the last couple of months planning out my truck topper camper build.
.... this changes EVERYTHING.
I dig! Keep the camera rollin’, looking forward to seeing more!
best set up ive seen! and i watched em all. amazing work!
Love the layout and the removable screw connections for ease of removal. Very ingenious. Wish you’d add a voice over dialog to this vid, that would make it perfect. Curious about the storage arrangement and cooking layout for prep and heat.
Wow! Found this is after searching for days about campers and I just love it 😍 Perfect
Wow. That is one of the neatest setups I’ve seen. Nice work.
Way to go, great job! Well designed, good use of available space. Enjoy!
Very impressed!!! Sweet build...I may need to revamp my build ideas now!!!
Super impressed by your design and execution. I started out with a bed tent on our truck and then built a similar set up with an ARE shell on the truck. It had a nice rear walk-thru door (no tail gate) so going in and out was much easier. Now, 14 campers later we are on our 5th slide in truck camper. One I built using the same Milliard tri-fold for our couch. Of the 15 campers we've had, 3 of them were custom builds and they were the most comfortable and personal. Kudos for the work and inspiration :-)
That is AMAZING! I just got an 8 foot truck bed trailer with a Leer 122 shell on it. This video will be a big inspiration for my build! Thanks for sharing!
Adam Savage I love my 122!
I just watched a number of these truck camper videos. Some were good. And some had great ideas that I will utilize. But this is the best use of every square inch and using light weight materials. 2x4's are over kill, heavy, and take up vital space. Even though you don't have storage under the bed, you do get a couch out of it. I have to decide which is more important.
Thank you for the lovely comment! My main goal with this cabinet build was to not spend much money, by using scrap we could source for free. Drawers under the bed really depend on the height of your canopy, and mine is as low as they come. I really like having bed be useable for 2, even when I'm the only one sleeping in there - it gives you plenty of room to spread out like a starfish and get comfy.
Been planning to build a camper like this for a while. Looked at a lot of CZcams videos. Yours is the only one I have found so far that has the mattress down inside the truck bed. Something I definitely want. Great video. Thanks!
This is one of the best builds I've seen to date! Well thought thru and I like the fact that its reversible.
Love idea of being able to remove all cabinets if you needed to load building materials and such. Seeing more details at slower speed would be very helpful or watching the build with measurements and materials used would have been perfectl! Looking forward to seeing more. Thank you!!
yes, I am also interested in measurement and materials
Very impressive!!! Great build.. You put some thought into it...Well done👍👍
This is awesome. Super creative, nicely done. Gots to love a pick-up truck.
Great set up. Thanks to charlie chaplin and buster keaton, i understood everything going on. Lol. For you younger kids, they were silent screen actors. Seriously, thanks for the video. Great build.
I've been watching a lot of these truck camper builds and this one is going into my saved video list. I haven't decided on a truck cap yet, and I need to fit in the garage so that will determine the height. I love the modular concept!
Wow! Looks awesome! Great job!
I have a low mileage, retired 1998 show truck F150 stepside. Just went and picked up my cap this morning. I purposely picked a cap with no side windows so I could add studding via wood and fibreglass to hang some cupboards, but this works too. Nice job!!!
This is awesome, great job
Great video. I really got what I needed which is a concept of the size and width I would be working with. Awesome 👏
Great design 👍 and very practical. I am working on my stealth truck. My build has similar features, all made out of pallet wood!
What a brilliant build! Bravo!
I like the build. I would definitely go with a higher top cap though being taller. Nicely done.
Serious! Well thought out
Awesome setup!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thee bestest build, seriously, WOW!
I've turned my Silverado 4x4 same but now I'm buying a slide in truck camper so I have a wet bath and a/c . Great built you done very nice 👍
This is amazing!
Nice setup!
Nice build!
Good job
Wow... Great set up.
Pretty slick. Well done 👍🏻
That's an awesome setup!
Excelente trabajo, felicidades!!!
Nice job I like it!
Very well done 👍👍
Really nice job 😊
Thanks for sharing. love it!
So cool to see the actual process ! I follow you on Instagram and randomly bumped into your channel on CZcams
Well done!!!
Me gusto tu proyecto sencillo pero practico te felicito saludos desde Puerto Rico
Awesome job
Nicely done
Great work 👍
Nice setup
The 2 twins into a sofa is genius!
Great project!
Very nice 👍
That is absolutely beautiful I love Best on CZcams
Hey Awesome set up I have 2018 F150 crew cab with the 5.5 foot box I'm looking at getting a cap on her and do some camping every now and then thanks for the video now my brain is ticking 😁😎👍👍🇨🇦
Did you built out your F150? I am looking to do the same. Just wondering about the cap. I'm looking at the Leer 180XR (they don't do the 122 for short box).
@@janecopeland2306 No I never did get a cap I got back into Sprinter Van Expediting again so that what I go camping 🏕 in now
Smartest design I've seen so far.
Love this! Plans please! 🙏I’m going to go look at your channel and there better be details Damn it! Lol
Very cool.
OMG !! That is brilliant !!!!!!!
thats pretty amazing!
Really nice!
Simple, I like it.
Great build‼️. Video is well done. Wish I had your plans or sketches. 👍👍👍👍👍👍🤡
I like the build and i like the pretty lady building it.
Muchas Gracias!‼️♥️
I only need a single wide bed so instead of having the mattresses stacked for a seat, I will have a drawer under the one mattress and sleep a little higher off the floor.
Very nice
Wow...impressive.
Clever girl!

She is smart and pretty!
Awesome.
Awesome !
I really admire your wood work. I wish you could share how you made the component parts. Also, how do you open and close / secure the tailgate from inside?
AWESOME!
I can't wait too get my truck done i have an 8 ft bed so I will have lots of room to play with
I like how the battery just appears 💥poof ✨
just like a switch, instant on - instant off !
That’s cool
SWEET!
i love the layout, where did you get the mattress pads
Design for shelf unit is awesome, did you come up with them or found pre made plans great build.
There were no pre made plans. I just used scrap pieces of timber wherever they would fit :)
your setup is great, i wish you could have explained the shelving a little.
Ace amundo ..😁pip pips and carryon
So is it that the video has no sound makes it “stealth”?
I love your setup. The beds look very comfy! They look to be about 6” high each? I’m assuming you pack clothes inside the back part of the cabinet and maybe your kitchen gear near the tailgate? Do you travel with a chuck box & cooler for a kitchen? Now that you’ve had this for a while, have you changed it or added to it? Would love to see more of your story and as others have said, thank you for not including the terrible background noise (some refer to it as music but as a musician, I’m offended by that name)!
Subed.
Where did you get your mattress pads? those look great stacked.
I think that looks pretty good! I'm wondering though, can the right side pieces all be bolted together, put in laying down and "raised" into position like the skeletonized wall panels of a house? With it in one piece it would be a lot quicker with less moving parts. It looks like you used all the available space you could, so might be too tight, but just a thought.
Orion Evans It probably could, but like she said, this way she can carry it. All one piece would be way too heavy.
Hi. Really like your set up. Just wondering how long your mattress are and where you got them.
Milliard 6 inch trifold queen, bought on Amazon :)
Very nice. Which mattresses are those. They look really solid and comfortable.
They're Milliard 6 inch trifold, found on Amazon
Wicked!
Just to let you know CZcams has free music for the back grand, just if you want to make the video better. Anyway cool setup
How do you control dusts during your drive? Do you have some sort of seal between your your canopy and truck bed door?
Our travels rarely take us off sealed roads, except for maybe the last couple of miles to a campsite, so we never see much dust. In the pacific northwest, keeping the rain out is our biggest struggle :) I don't have any special dust seals.
Where did you find those cushions?
Awesome. Did you build those cabinets yourself? What are the make and model of those mattress pillows you use. Thanks !
They are borrowed from my ikea Soderhamn couch :) you could probably buy them individually from ikea.
I actually found someone else with an F150 doing this! Seems like everybody has a Tacoma :) Anyway, this idea is perfect for what I want to do. I'm just curious how you attach it all to the truck bed. Is it one c-clamp?
2 C clamps, which are more clearly shown in the next video i just uploaded :)
Where did you get the mattress
How can I get your plans for this build
Awesome build...great idea on the fold out work/cooking space. Have you had any issues with gear falling/jumping out them in off-road conditions? and...how long is your truck bed?
My truck bed is 5'5". Nothing jumps off the shelves when i drive down rutted, poorly maintained forrest service roads, but i don't do extreme off roading or 4WDing like others. If the roads are terrible, the worst thing that happens is the bottles in my minibar tip over and jumble themselves around. Funnily enough, they've never fallen off their shelf!
@@mytruckcamper1034 haha...love your layout. Will probably borrow a few of your ideas for my build. Cheers
What sizes are the mattresses?
Did you have Audio for this build. I cant get voice or tell what you have done exactly.
There is no audio for this hyperlapse. I tried to write as much detailas possible in the video description.
Do you have plans for how you did this build? Interested!
And how do you keep that battery charged? Is it linked to the main battery or do you use a trickle charger? Couldn’t see on the video.
Great job, very inspiring.
I don't have plans for this particular build, and they'd be a right mess to draw because it was built with all sorts of shapes and sizes of leftover floorboards we picked up for free! I'm currently working on some plans to build a replica of this using only one 4'x8' sheet of 3/4 inch ply, I'm really close to having it done! A great tetris challenge!
Re the battery - i charge it using a briefcase solar panel when we're camping. I plan to eventually set up a little gas vent and hook it to the main battery. Haven't quite figured out where I want it to permanently sit though (it won't fit in the engine space unfortunately).
For a 3 day weekend, my single 100AH battery lasts on a single charge :) it's usually hooked up to the fridge, lights and charges 2 phones.
