Dmitry Baranovskiy - You Don't Know SVG

- The animated Web has come a long way since JavaScript based animations just a few years ago. Increasingly, developers are taking advantage of CSS transforms, transitions, and animation to bring their interfaces to life. But these sophisticated visualizations and experiences users expect at times need more than JavaScript and this is where SVG comes in.
In this session Dmitry Baranovskiy shows us how to resurrect our content using Scalable Vector Graphics.
This dude is hilarious! :D
He also convinced me to learn SVG deeper and I will!
After 3 yrs what have you done? pls tell me
He's so right. I suggested a web design group a little over a year ago that we should do everything in SVG, and they all tripped out.
I had a colleague only a few days ago taking on and carrying forward a UI concept model I gave him blew his mind. He noted that he could change the colors of the logo with a couple of code tweaks as it was svg, I then added that we could control it further with css or JS and he had a sorta "wow" moment. It's the graphic only community we need to convince.
LOL one of the funniest conferences I've ever seen :)
He's incredible!!!
15:57 - refreshing to see a developer who gets that there's nothing new under the sun. ☺
How can you not be entertained by Dmitry's frustrations ... I simply love this. Too many docile web devs and I'm glad we've got a bit of John McENROE in web dev ;-)
oh god I love this guy's work.
It's just so frustrating seeing people not trying out svg because they're scared of new things, they'd rather show you the next, useless "how to draw homer simpsons in pure css" "tutorial" which does not teach you anything reusable nor shows a manageable and programmatically accessible workflow. But it's cool for them, cause they know css and think they won't need svg for graphics
I agree, hadn't tried it out before (i'm primarily a logo designer) but wow, does it make it easy and add value to send a client over a fully responsive file from illustrator in their logo delivery.
I agree. SVG is really cool. I plan to build landing pages and infographics with it.
Back in the early 00's there was not much support for it, but now with responsive and with the popularity of flat design, the opportunity for creativity is much more promising and FUN. SVG=FUN
Love the part when you said "Good luck!". Made my day :-D
This was really fun to watch, and I learned a lot. Dmitry cracks me up!
My mother asked me "what comedy show were u watching".
One guy who can make learning a fun bussiness
Dmitry is my spirit animal
«If you don't know SVG, you can't call yourself web-developer - call yourself web-enthusiast» 👍🏼
Very interesting. I've used packages like Inkscape for years making art now and then, but I think I might look into the inner workings of SVG and play with it some more.
But Dmitry. Dude. CALM. DOWN.
I ♥ Inkscape
Respectfully, I disagree; he's enthusiastic but fairly level headed and there's a lot to be said about enthusiasm.
Crispen Smith Punching things is going a bit far though. ;P
well, you've got me there. But overall, I don't know if a "calm down" is the best response, so much as a "less violence please". I wouldn't want less enthusiasm.
Crispen Smith /shrug/ same difference, I guess ;P
Hey Count me in. SVG are awesome man,I will learn SVG from today.
It is very annoying how the camera stays on Dmitry when we need to see his presentation, and stays on his presentation when we need to see Dmitry. Ugh! Looking forward to the future where these things will be captured in super high def VR and we can just enjoy with our headsets as if we were there in the audience!
Great presentation. Inspired a lot.
Currently doing an awesome website using SVG for design. It's a challenge, but worth it!
It's so cool lecture. I will definitiv start to use SVG
Hey... learn SVG! 😃 How to scare people. Great video, very inspiring and I finally get the whole picture about this SVG thing! 👍
Трщ
Very good presentation! Inspired
Very good
Definitely going to try SVG now, not going to be a Hipster anymore
This guy is crazzy about SVG,seriously !!. BTW nice talk.
I always come back to this video, the jokes were great and he spoke truth about people like things to be easy so they use snap.svg rather than Base svg xml..
A discordant but wicked speech.. I shall now go forth and get crackin'
Good introduction to SVG.
Awesome info.
Nice! I will dig into it! :D
Summary of the talk: Learn SVG and JUST DO IT!
I understand that svg is a little below the radars and deserves a bit of attention but the recent presentations tend to present it as all rainbows and unicorns technology when svg also adds new dimensions of messy complexity to the hopeless mess that html/css already is. There are 5 ways of using it in html, and each brings different set of limitations regarding caching, dynamic styling, interaction, and animation. Suddenly making a clickable, reusable svg button that changes color according to external css rules turns out to be a problem and again you need to spend time not on gaining actual lasting knowledge but to navigate around semi-random quirks and workarounds. OTOH that's what css has always been... It's incredibly frustrating that www, being so crucial, is based on so crappy languages.
lol what is it with front-end talks and the 80s intro music ;-D
That was awesome
You convinced me.
lol great presentation
@DmitryBaranovsk Share the rage my friend, Share the rage.... those who are passionate cannot stay quiet. SVG Should rule :-)
PS: I have an awesome idea brewing in my head, but I'm not going to mention it yet cause I want to be the first to do it.
Done yet?
Not yet, but it turns out I wasn't the first anyway, someone beat me to it :-)
I just started using Snap.svg and it is pretty great, but I soon discovered that there have been no commits in over a year. On the github page, someone recently raised an issue asking Dmitry for a status update, but there has been no reply. It's too bad because Snap is pretty cool, but now I'm looking elsewhere for something more maintained. Anyway I was wondering if anyone else can comment and fill me in on what happened with Snap? Thanks!
this is the most russian tech talk ever
20:46 Good luck :D
Won me !! :) (y)
I guess when you really believe in a platform, you can't evangelize it enough.
Maby if it was simple to create that didn't require learning complicated code people would use it!
isnt complicated code.
Zac Ledyard Yeah, but try to manipulate this thing with CSS and JS.
Edilson Jacob Silva Junior I guess CSS is a little more difficult, but SVG is like HTML, because they're both just XML, so it really isn't that much more difficult once you learn some of the specifics of SVG styling. And JavaScript is hard, just because JavaScript is hard, not really because JS is hard to use with SVG.
Zac Ledyard I said that because I've seen that has several limitations when compared to tags like and that the workarounds aren't that simple. Anyway, I'm really lay when it comes to SVG, so I'm probably wrong.
Ah, I see. No I dont think you can animated SVG through the IMG tag. You have to put them inline if I'm not mistaken. Yes, IMG is pretty limited.
Constant sniffing by every keynote speaker can get pretty damn annoying.
hahaha im into svg
