You didn't mention it, but a big reason Neurodegenerative diseases are on the rise is also because fewer people are dying from Cancer and Cardiovascular (heart attacks and strokes) along with many diseases managed long term like HIV and Diabetes. So basically, we've increased the odds that we'll find out if we get a neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer's.
I'm wondering how much these treatments will cost... I often wonder how the creators of breakthrough medications in America can sleep at night, knowing that after they slap patents all over their invention, they proceed to inflate medication costs well above what it is worth, so they can profit off individuals in their own nation as well as medical services in other countries around the world.
When I was a kid, dying at 60 years of age or early 60s was pretty regular... wasn't a big shock. If you made it to 60 or so years, was sort of considered more or less a good go, that people had their innings so to speak. Today, if you don't make it to 80, it's sorta considered too soon and a shame. So it's not surprising that a lot of late age ailments are on the rise that didn't exist much before or in the same numbers.
I work in a Long Term Care Home in Canada, where like 60+ percent of our residents have some form of Dementia, so its pretty encouraging to hear that there are new drugs that could actually help some of these people. Its a really sad and lonely way to die
One lesser AI headline I liked this year was its use in the Herculaneum scrolls -- a massive collection of historical texts burnt to near ash BEFORE the centuries buried them. Yet, with modern scanners & AI trained to pick out the ink from the char, they've slowly started reading what this library had to say. [Just "purple" so far, but very early days...]

I’m sorry, I find AI in many ways to not be ready for prime time, not even close. Many companies are already trying to ditch their customer service staff for AI systems, and all that does is lead to massive frustration and displeasure with the company from the customers. I tried an AI system this evening to find out how to cook a frozen pork chop in a skillet. No matter how I worded the question it kept telling me to put it in the oven. In short it wasn’t listening to me, it was only providing the answers it had been programmed for. Not so intelligent.

Lost my dad in 2022 to Alzheimer's. It is the most difficult thing to go through. Not least of which is because so much time was stolen from me by COVID and the idiots who "Oh I have a bit of a cough but I'm going to go on an adventure!!" putting the home my father was in into lockdown, over and over again. In his last 2 years I lost 9 months with him due to lockdowns alone.

I like how Kurzegesagt calls it the year 12,024 because that's a much closer number to the number of years of the human era. Using the current year count based on an event defined by religion, really distorts the perception of time and discounts how long we've been doing our thing as people.

I don't benefit from instagram or tic tok or any social media. I will continue to watch a very select group of youtubers (like you) but my goals is no more than one video a week. I've had enough, and I can't take the BS anymore. Fight the good fight for all of us Joe. You're a good person. THX
" I vote Democrat always " or in other words.. " I am a loyal obedient dog "
That taking off glasses bit at the end was certainly effective at keeping my attention, was amusing to see it and kept watching to see at what points you would do it again. I suggest you make a mental note or something to create something like that with each advertisement, if only to keep viewer attention for just that bit longer :)
Joe, I was waiting for The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" to start after the last time you took off your glasses during the promo for Brilliant.🤣
I am interacting with your video to boost your visibility. I love you Joe!
"If you wanna see another video about parachute failures..." immediately goes to a Planet Fitness ad 🤦♂️😂🤣
Interesting fact about ORISIS REx is that the lead guitarist of the little known british band Queen, Doctor Sir Brian May, was heavily involved with deciding where ORISIS REx would take it's sample.
I appreciate the toilet humor at the beginning and the comes out when it comes out. 👍🏻
Love you man, happy new year. You ARE my favorite educational AND entertaining youtuber. You do amazing, always informative and funny, rare to find but let alone keep consistent:) keep it up
He tried to poop. Got ran off by axe-wielding murderer. "It comes out when it comes out" - Joe Scott (sufferer of week long constipation)
Ah, yes... Uncle Joe's annual fireside chat. Halfway through the video I expected to see a hand come out of nowhere and put another log on the fire.
Your advertisement pitch on Brilliant was....(removes eyeglasses) ...brilliant!
Nice touch by adding the crackling fire sound effect to this video.
You rock, Joe.
I found the cracking / clicking noise to be extremely distracting and unpleasant. I had to bring up my audio equalizer and put a low-pass filter on to be able to finish watching it.
Thanks for the laughter. Nobody does a more dramatic glasses removal... NOBODY
There was a paper published by R.P. Kerr of University of Canterbury, Christchurch on 10/15 challenging the existence of singularities stating right off the bat "There is no proof that black holes contain singularities..." A total Penrose/Hawking diss-track.
Off work today, at home with my 16 month old, eating grapes n cheddar goldfish watching some Joe Scott 😎 Happy 2024 y'all!!
Happy New Year to You & Yours Joe 🎉
What a treat! Already a Mr. Joe's class, that early in the year! Thank you!!!
I like that Joe casually and shamelessly plugged his merch. Good style.
My dad died last year from dementia and other complications. So any news about medicine is good. You lose that person mentally eat before the pass.
Happy New Year, Joe! It has been so great to receive your well wishes every Monday. I hope this year brings you much joy and success. By the way, please make sure to keep Predator Clone locked away.
Can we do cozy more often omg 😳 I love it and didn’t realize how chill and nice a fireplace is lol
I thought there was controversy about the efficacy of amyloid reducing Alzheimer's drugs? Like that the first one was fast tracked for approval while not adequately supported by evidence and also incredibly expensive.
You are so right about the things you say. Love you and your channel. 🙂
The fake fire crackle while talking about alzheimer? Wild. 😂
You just made me drop everything, push pause, and make a hot cocoa.
Happy New year Joe and all.
One must stay vigilant in guarding against the manipulation of one's emotions by politicians, pundits, and populists. In that regard a good portion of the electorate is defenseless.
Happy Magical New Year Joe & family. I love your videos. 🥳🎊🤗🥰🎉🎈2024 is definitely not going to be a boring yr. 🙄🤦🏼♀️
Great video. I believe I’ve only discovered this channel this year and I gotta say, I’ve learned a lot. Notification bell is on for 2024!
Welcome to 2024 Joe. Wishing you the best in the coming year.
OK could you also please do a video on the science discoveries of 2023 that really helped mankind? The kind that make this a better world? Thanks in advance.
Yes!!! I’d love to see this too!
I like how Kurzegesagt calls it the year 12,024 because that's a much closer number to the number of years of the human era. Using the current year count based on an event defined by religion, really distorts the perception of time and discounts how long we've been doing our thing as people.
Good video. My glasses off to you. Happy New Year. 🎉
super excited about the alzheimers drugs!!! happy new year scott joe
