This reasoning for Snake having CQC makes a lot more sense then the novelizations explanation. The novel pretty much just said: Otacon found the CQC manual online, then had Snake learn it, using Otacon as a test dummy.
Octopuses are actually pretty smart and can perfectly blend in with their surroundings. I'm not sure if I'd call them "The ninja of the sea" but I don't think that's a ridiculous claim.
the term is UG. unmanned gear. not quite a metal gear but it is so closely related to a metal gear (fully mechanized, often similar to other gears, sometimes are capable of nuke strikes always have legs, ect.) but for simplicity people just call it a metal gear
