    • @Cheodo
      @Cheodo Před 5 lety +9

      @@goldenphoenix00001 because people don't go to burns to have what they do be broadcast/filmed/photo'd etc. The whole point is to have a place where one can be and do who they want and what they want, without having to worry about the default world and its judgement, rules, and prejudices. In theory, everyone at a burn should be considered equal and no different from one another, no celebrity status, no poor, no rich, just burners at home. Unfortunately, Default crept in and the egos associated with it remain. If a top neurosurgeon(as an example) wants to go and wear a pink tutu and roll around the playa, they should be encouraged, but if that were recorded/broadcast, then they may likely face repercussions in their professional life.
      Stephen, if you go -and I hope you do- just remember that there you are free to be the truest sense of you; so participate, explore, and Embrace Immediacy. Guide him well, Nick.

    it's fun to hear a Birgin (burning man virgin) describe their experience. I hope his description doesn't add another 10,000 attendees next year. The festival has attendance has doubled since I 1st attended in 2005. it's still a fabulous event and I 100% agree with Nick Kroll that Stephen Colbert would love it!! By the way, your entry ticket has a disclaimer on the back that says you enter the festival at your own risk. Every year someone has a heart attack or falls us an art car and dies, but the festival isn't liable. They have excellent (and free) emergency medical care on the Playa and in emergencies, people are airlifted to a hospital in Reno. My point is that BM does it's best to make the experience safe and fun for everyone!

  • @mixiekins
    @mixiekins Před 5 lety +34

    With how much Colbert likes Lord of the Rings, he'd fit right in at Burning Man.
    Generally one thinks of burners as typical hippies, but surprisingly enough there's actually a lot of hardcore nerds with hearts of gold who attend. There was a whole arcade at the last event I attended, and I met a bunch of programmers and fellow videogame developers, one of which was a college buddy of the creator of Mortal Kombat. I've also been to a burner-hosted birthday party for Bilbo Baggins (since his is the only birth-date mentioned in the books) where there was LARPing (I learned to sword fight), movie screenings, and cooking of LotR-themed foods (I made lembas).
    Everyone is polite and considerate of one another, respects boundaries, and are very open-minded. I'd explain the burner mentality as being equal parts no-nonsense, individual empowerment, community without tribalism, generosity, and passion for creativity and imagination. You find a lot of art projects and creative activities, too, sometimes even cheeky political expression; one family I saw at a recent event had a "flat earth globe" booth (the joke being that it was just cartography-- maps).
    I would also describe it as wholesomeness in a way, in that there's no-pressure in partaking in what's offered, and that you're not seen any differently weather you abstain or not; while I very much so would use the word wholesomeness, I do also understand that many cultures/religions/whatever may abstain from mentioning wholesomeness in the same breath as some of what you'll find at a burner event, such as free love (including concepts such as polygamy and homosexuality), self confidence of going au natural (yup, just like a clothing-optional beach), and the use of alcohol/narcotics.
    In short, it's all about acceptance and feeling welcomed to be yourself and to simply enjoy life. If someone is of a mind which allows them to leave any judgemental bigotry at the door, they'd have a pretty nice time, I think.

My favorite writers, comedians ever, all bunched up in a frenzy of "we Don't talk about that subjects" it's like watching squirrels fight or mate. It's hard to watch and listen too. Also you don't have to be on drugs to enjoy burning man. They also have awesome bars everywhere. Distrikt is one of my favorite bars with a DJ there that's only open during the day and they have blended iced fruit smoothies that are fabulous. Man when I went I kicked it a lot at the rollerdisco wish I could've gone this year perhaps I'd have skated with Nick Kroll!

    My dad and a lot of his friends are burners so it's a culture that I've known about since I was a child, so you're Steven talk about it so skeptically with absolutely no basis of knowledge is so funny. Like he's so concerned about colts, you should actually be concerned about the playa does cuz it is very drying and it's so fine it's never truly gone

    Seriously people have such a harsh judgment of burning man. It's an incredible experience I think it would be great if Stephen went. Stephen is rich he can 'Glamp' I actually think he'd really enjoy it. I don't know anyone who has ever gone to Burning Man who didn't enjoy it. It's something you can't possibly understand no matter how much you think you know about it, until you've experienced it.
