Their video diaries and the interviews during the X factor were a massive reason for why they became so popular so quickly, and for why Simon ultimately decided to give them the contract even though they didn't win, wasn't it? And I don't know if that's true for everybody, but I think the interviews became so popular because of Louis. He was always the center of attention, but he never overshadowed the other boys. It looked like he gave all of them the confidence to act naturally and funny all the time, and he himself was so funny!!! All his stupid jokes and his crazy energy... It really made them stand out!

I think some of that is part of what his PR team wants him to do as a solo artist, and some of it is the after effect of being heavily shipped with his bandmates (which has resulted in some very intrusive situations involving those fans who ship him with Louis/Zayn/Niall. Harry has probably just decided it's best to keep his friendships with all of them completely private (and yep I think he's still friends with all of them except maybe Zayn).
