bossa nova is a brazilian music style that is basically a fusion of samba and jazz :) Billie said that it was her main inspiration for this track's sonority
no shit
@@apaltado SO MANY PEOPLE have no idea why it's called Billie Bossa Nova. They think she's trying to say she's a... Boss... No one knows what Bossa Nova is.
@@shinohidanzetsu i guess it's because old billie fans were kids and they stuck around. and with kids I mean the ones who live in their own bubble

Holy fuck, the whole thing in one go?! Unexpected but definitely welcomed.
Damn. It was such fun watching that, listening through and hearing all that you had to say about the songs. Really reminded me about why I've been subscribed to your channel for so long: you make great videos and analysis, plus, you're very funny.
Holy shit and that album. I'm definitely with you on that I've fallen in love with her music and can't wait for everything she might come up with in the future. I hope she doesn't die young and also, that I can be here listening along to you listening to her stuff (haha).
Have a great day, my man (Happy to see you healthy and positive, by the way!).
This album flowed so well so I expected it to be a 1 part

That’s what she said. Not sorry
What do you mean?
If you remember after 2 years
Finally someone who loves those distorted, choppy sounds at the end of I Didn't Change My Number.
its becuz he is an average experimental music enjoyer 😎
Favorite part of that song, I wish the rest of the album was more like that tbh, would be even better
Who doesn't love that? Kill them
Wait till you hear it live, Fin kills it
The irony of you saying this and his part 1 reaction on When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?😅
The title track is definitely my favourite song she's ever released
Yeah, it blew me away. It’s so good
Just imagine if she made an album that sounded like the second part of hte? Bruh the internet will lose their shit
@@acousticks526 while I doubt it’ll ever happen, I do hope it will lmao. the second part gives me chills every time, I love it when songs can do that
@@sofiayeomans wtf the hip hop influences are very minimal that is not how I would discribe her sound at all
Exactly.... it just gave me my nostalgic, angsty, overblown, super emotional old My Chemical Romance vibes. I loved it freaking much ❤️
I now want a punk-rock album from Billie. That is all.
6 months late but Billie Eilish is the modern extension of Punk-Rock, and no I will not elaborate
@@SaddisticSpeller You don’t have to, you’re pretty much right.
there's absolutely nothing punk rock about this, the sonoriry is in the style of punk-pop, from the likes of paramore or avril lavigne, that punk-pop has nothing to do with the sound of punk rock.
@@SaddisticSpeller not punk rock at all, don't get things mixed, what is called punk rock is the one that originated in the 70's as a rejection of the futility of mainstream rock, she doesn't sound anything like it and of course she has nothing to do with that movement, she never struggled as an independent artist in dirty gritty punk venues. She rather fits perfectly of what later became pop-punk for sure.
People really need to stop slapping the word "punk" in front of the things they like, she's pop and that's fine, she has nothing to do with punk, she's not DIY in any way or shape, she literally got a road into the industry paved by her family
Goldwing is absolutely about the music industry but also generally about younger, innocent women in particular (she specified she doesn’t mean pure in terms of sexual activity but in terms of not being traumatised etc). So she’s talking about misogyny in general, but even more so in the context of the music industry. I also think the best line in the song is “buy you like a souvenir just to sell you in a year” which points strongly at the industry’s treatment especially of younger female artists that get moulded to a trend, then discarded.
I really love goldwing’s placement on the album personally, actually. To me it feel like it’s dialling up the religious theme to the max after having touched on it previously. And when one looks at the wording of the hymn, its content can be interpreted as just as sexual as oxytocin, except “contextualised” in a religious setting it’s suddenly associated with a different meaning. To me goldwing feels like such a perfectly placed song, especially since it also warps and transitions thematically into fame, placing on a pedestal, misogyny. It’s such an amazing crux of the themes of the album as a whole. There were already hints of fame related details in the previous songs, like needing to keep a relationship secret. But goldwing’s bridge really is just chef’s kiss to me. And when the beat drops ughhh so good. But it’s too short. I definitely needed more. Especially for a song from Billie the second half is a little bit too sparse lyrically. (As I write this I’m laughing because I’m the kind of person who sometimes accidentally swallows my own air, followed by a coughing fit, and can definitely not sing, but here I am with my proverbial monocle saying “this needed more” like wtf, shut up, self. 😂)
This and i think it could be about Olivia Rodrigo
This was a fantastic second album. One of the best albums of the year.
ikrr
Yassssss
Everyone I know who’s listened to the title track was just speechless. It’s definitely the best song she’s made for sure imo.
I seriously adore every single bit of the last part of the song and I SERIOUSLY HOPE she brings that vibe into her next album.
Kinda cool if she made a whole alt rock album and maybe doing some collaboration with other heavy music artist to join her.
What about this made you speechless? Its just pop punk doesn't paramore make the same sort of music and probably others? What about this did u love? Like genuinely asking because i dont understand the hype not being a cunt
@@ahhhhyes It's not just pop punk it sounds more like a shoegaze track
@@ahhhhyes lmao have you ever listened to Paramore? It’s nothing like Paramore.
The hype is that:
1. It’s 2 different vibes and types of music sandwiched in one
2. It’s 2 timeless pieces like Frank Sinatra snd Radiohead had a duet
3. She has raw emotions in this song and it is touching
That’s why it is hyped
@@ahhhhyes it’s…it’s not pop punk. At all.
It had an alt rock sound and the mixing of the guitars was very industrial. It’s not pop punk at all bc it incorporated multiple little things from other genres mixed with the first half of the song.
Not on my that but the transition from a lullaby like song to out of nowhere a, basically, rock song.
This reaction and review makes me happier than ever

Also Brad you need to react to a Beach House album 😈😈😈
Thanks
Yes Bloom plsss since he hates slow songs lol
Yeah Devotion 😳😳
I really enjoyed this reaction! You seem really chill and just... genuine. You're also hella entertaining but i enjoy your analysis of the tracks. You spot an incredible amount of details, especially for a first listen. Basically, you put some thoughts i maybe also had floating around in my head, into quite precise words - or maybe i just feel that way because i agree on most things you said and they seem rooted in a quite very fair assessment of the songs :D
Brad after 10 seconds: "I really like how this album is going"
I was exactly the same as you Brad, I respected Billie but wasn’t in love with her music, but this album blew me away. I agree that Billie is creating the music of the future and she has made a truly special album. And also I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your review and I love your passion for this album!

“Your Power” is actually, to Billie, the most personal song she made here. It’s about an abusive relationship that she experienced herself when she was a bit younger.
I am impressed that you realize there's more to a song than whether you like it or not and that sometimes you can actually not care for it but acknowledge it's a good song. That you give songs that you're not too sure of a second listen is also a big plus in my book.
It's so weird but when an album like this comes out I'm always like 'damn, can't wait to watch Brad's reaction on this'
That is what happens when people starts to listen the Brazillian's most tradicional song style of all time Bossa Nova, thank you billie eilish for that

The doors used a bossa nova style rythem on their song break on through to the other side.
@@tyjoisacoward4010 Yes, they introduced their generation to it, and now Billie is doing the same
@@joaolucas908 yeah, it's pretty cool!
oh man there's so many cool bands using bossa nova! it's not the thing i listen to most, but a band i can think of is the band Lamp and their 2004 album (as well as other albums)
me yelling “press fucking play” when you’re talking about my future being slow😭 literally 2 seconds away from the beat drop
i love how listening to billie bossa nova, not knowing what bossa nova means, he says it's like the "new wave". which is what bossa nova translates as (or like new style etc.)
I love how everyone needs a moment to recover after the song Happier Than Ever.
This opinion will probably change over time, but at the moment, Everybody Dies is actually my favorite from the album. One of my biggest fears is dying young or dying alone or just dying in general and something about the song really resonated with me, like I almost related with the song but don’t exactly understand why at the same time. It doesn’t have the deepest lyrics or really say much new about the concept of death and the fact that everyone eventually dies, but I’m honestly okay with that, and I don’t think the song was trying to be incredibly deep or say something bold on the matter. I thought that Billie was just sharing her thoughts on death and, while they could be seen as surface-level or generic, I still appreciate her sharing her perspective on the concept. Adding on to that, the song sounds absolutely beautiful, with it featuring some of Billie’s best vocal work to date and the music moving perfectly along with her singing. Overall, while there are other tracks on Happier Than Ever that really stand out (GOLDWING, NDA, and Therefore I Am are pretty spectacular), Everybody Dies is still the best on the album in my eyes and is easily one of my new favorites from Billie
exactly!!!!!
YES YES YES YES YES soooooooooo underrated, its my favorite song ever from Billie and nobody seems to like it
long comment alert!
when billie released the tracklist / song titles before the album came out, I was most looking forward to everybody dies because I anticipated that it would be a different outlook on previous songs like listen before I go & everything I wanted which are explicitly about suicidal ideation.
I will admit that I was slightly underwhelmed with how the song came out but I still adore it and it makes me cry because so many of us have been on both ends: wanting to die so badly and then coming to terms somewhat with the idea of death but still being scared of it… etc.
death is the most difficult concept for humans to grasp and accept, and it means the world to me to hear the thoughts of someone who dealt with suicidal thoughts during what most would call a high in their career.
the bling and glamor of fame doesn’t take that away, and if anything it intensifies feelings of existential dread.
idk if any of this makes sense, I just really appreciate that billie released a song about accepting the reality of death, in contrast to her previous work about causing your own death. heavy shit but she managed to lighten it a bit
Gotta love the chord choices in the first half of the title track, gives it that old 1930’s “don’t wanna set the world on fire” vibe.
I did like the way how Overheated was vocally made. She sounded a bit like a machine, a robot. With the lyrics "can't be defeated, can't be deleated." it really sounds like she is undestroyable and talking like she don't give a fck, like a virus on a machine, like just being yourself and don't care what people say. Without any emotional undertone (well she has off course, but with those robot vocals I see it different.) I hope other people think the same.
Sameee. The only problem that I have about the song is the part where she makes fun of "plastic surgery".
Like literally the previous song on the album was talking about how she shouldnt be judged about what she wears and what she does. Than proceeds to make fun of plastic surgery.
I dunno, just doesnt sit right with me
@@gtw138 well it's about the standard they create when people don't even recognize they've had surgery...
@@gtw138 Well the thing is, People use plastic surgery because they can't accept their body how it is. She is not making fun of, she just trying to point out how messed up it is and how much people care about looking like the perfect picture they see on social media.
@@mb33k10 that logic doesn’t really hold up though, you could say that about makeup or anything people do to make themselves look better to themselves. there’s nothing wrong with altering your appearance if it makes you happy
First pink for the pilots now blonde for billie 😳
As someone who has followed you for a long time I just want to say that you look a lot happier and well, you look happier than ever lol. hell yeah! I couldn't make it to the stream so I was hoping you'd do this.
this album is fire. btw waiting for ok computer i missed the livestream
you’re really smart too and the way you break down songs is so helpful
Everybody Dies was a standout for me. Her soaring vocal performance shines over the brooding, pulsing instrumental. The instrumental builds so nicely- adding in a low arpeggio under the second verse, with a faint snare ringing through.
In the same way that the Halley’s Comet instrumental shimmers like the comet she references, the minimal Everybody Dies instrumental resolutely marches off into the abyss. But at the darkest point, light shines through as the synths drop away and Billie reassures me that I am not alone; I am not unknown. Personally I find a lot of comfort in those words
Somehow Brad has made me love this album even more

Yeah agreed. Ive watched him for 2 years. Got hooked by his fucking insane black parade reaction
this album is so fucking good and so fucking mental. you can hear the rock influences in songs like oxytocin and NDA, which to me sound very nine inch nails-esque. and also obviously on happier than ever, it sounds pop-punk inspired at times and then on the big drop it’s like a combination of every single genre that is present on the album and it becomes a beautiful mush of alt rock and it’s just incredible. a masterpiece of an album
There are definitely shades of Massive Attack’s Mezzanine on some of the heavier tracks like I Didn’t Change My Number and Oxytocin, which can only be a good thing. This really is a fantastic album.
Ngl I got angel vibes from oxytocin when I first heard it.
@@daniman0114 Same here. I’m also getting Risingson vibes here and there. And Inertia Creeps as well. It’s like Billie and Finneas have taken the essence (and grittiness) of those tracks, put their own spin on it and given us something new. It’s fantastic to hear.

Haha dude calling "Happier Than Ever" a nuclear bomb is SO true. Well put!
hey brad, love your videos!
This album is one of the best albums I've ever listened to. It really feels like this is what this decade of pop music is going to sound like.
I think that everybody dies is actually about how she always comforts herself with the thought, that everything eventually will end, when she feels like shit's too much for her at the moment. It makes sense as a theme to be after this interlude and song touching on her dealing with stuff that centainly got into her head, while being completely out of her control, as you explained overheated. But generally i agree, i also found this song pretty basic and uninteresting, judging just by what it is, but looking at the big picture, it fits into context. Just wish that she would have actually made it more this way, like positive nihilism and not a young teenage realizing that well... We all die xD idk maybe I'm projecting, but i feel like she somehow missed the actual point of this and what she actually meant lol
i had the same exact reaction when i listened to this lol, keep up the great content!
I loved this. Appreciate your reaction.
Seeing this live on twitch was the funniest thing!
Just a fun thing, the start of I Didn't Change My Number is actually her pittie Shark. He's part of the percussion within the song too. She wanted to involve him in the album this time.
First time I heard the title track my jaw dropped. It’s an insane song. Billie also mentioned one of her favourite songs is Girl from Ipanema and she took inspiration of that for Billie Bossa Nova 😊
