    It's part of the training. You get it done to you, and you do it to others.
    Having it done to you is definitely not fun, but then you'd understand how it hurts when you do it to others. When you know this, then you don't fool around with it, and use it properly.
    Maybe that runs counter to how you understand martial arts, but do know that Silat is not meant to entertain. It is a maiming/killing art birthed in war.

    Limb distractions are the absolute best close quarter fight Enders IMO. They're also, at this point in time, something very few people outside of the silat and Filipino martial arts community know about. They are practical, easy to execute, can be performed under stress regardless of your finess level, and comparatively speaking, work on most any terrain. What's not to love about them!?

      Show me video of a successful limb destruction from anywhere on the internet, in any kind of fighting, in the street or in the ring. It just doesn't happen. Pls, do yourself a favor, stop worshipping other people as little gods and and look at REALITY.
      People don't have the reflexes to simply get out of the way of a punch once it is thrown, but they are supposed to be able to do precise limb destructions? Impossible. Fantasy. In forty years in this field, I have never seen even ONE example of deliberate limb destruction. Not even one.

      @Peter Bravestrong Nice example. Usually silat didn't teach things like that formally, but it'll be explained as you progress informally.
      It's considered as secrets of silat and you can find lots of it in the "bunga".
      It won't be obvious for untrained eyes, but sometimes, that little seemingly useless movements are training and conditioning for something dangerous.
      What maul done in the video, albeit seems painful, was executed in very controlled manner just to give pain, not injury, so the other guy can really learn.

      Ok I know your going off of what you see and trying to be skeptical, but I've practiced and been able to perform different moves that have limb destruction, it's not impossible, it's just that it requires practice to have joint precision, it takes a lot of time to get the techniques right, one of the people who trained me said to do it 100,000 times before you can say that you truly mastered the one move, it's requires thorough conditioning and body mechanic understanding to make it work.

    I agree with what's been said previously about having it done to you. Once you've experienced the pain you somehow learn it quicker, and have confidence that you KNOW the technique works when you perform it on someone else.

    Silt IMO is THE ultimate art for urban combat and that even includes the MMA type of fighting that is all the rage today. Silat and the other arts of southeast Asia are not meant for sport, but for defense against foreign invaders. This is why they are so DEVASTATING

    Range of motion issue from injury or handicap? This is one martial art form you can still use for effective defense. Which is extremely pertinent as you can be targeted by your appearance of helplessness by bad people.

    I thiink this shows all of us that if the attacker does not nail this teacher on the first punch he throws or even tries to throw, it is all over for him. I do admit that I probably wouldnt enjoy taking the classes if the teacher demonstrates so harshly all the time in class. I know he is doing it to try to create an anchor for the student to memorize the movement(I hope thats the reason. lol) but he must lose a lot of students who do not want to be hit like that in every class. But this teacher knows his stuff, thats for sure. This was really interesting and I have attended silat classes and seminar before but it probabaly wasnt the Brunei style.

      This is how we train in Indonesia, they also train like this in Asia, this why we are the best at what martial arts we do, its the way we're trained, they don't train like this in America. This is why us Indonesians and the Asians are so tough with martial arts, its the way we are taught it helps to become firm in our attack and have a stronger instinct also as well as other benefits instead of being babied through the training process.

      in order to also feel the what these techniques will do to your opponent n how theyd feel, is also the purpose of demonstrating like this. it creates slightly more of a live atmosphere as well, like I said many benefits.

      @truebluekit Před 10 lety +8

      Actually, one of the reasons silat teachers are hard on the pupils is that they want the pupils to understand that silat is very dangerous, and the strikes are very painful even when you're being careful. The lesson for the student: use this only when you absolutely must.
      Also, it toughens them up.

    • @MarcV8888
      @MarcV8888 Před 10 lety +1

      truebluekit Kit and Flloyd, I agree. But I am over 50. I never see any students,especially new people over 40. So what good is teaching an art if people over 40 cant handle it. I have done some rough arts, Id say silat is the hardest to learn. I mean in the west we are not going to get in a fight in maybe our whole adult life, one has to ask, is it worth training THAT hard, that long, so many movements to memorize for just self defense youll probbaly never use. I also have seen Aikido teachers close down their schools because eveeryone thinks its so soft, but 2 hr classes or getting thrown on your back,ass,head and everywhere else, it takes so much out of the body. I think no matter what art you take, you need a teacher that fits you, right? After all, even the best teachers lose many more students than they keep. I always ask why? Some great martial artists would be great and unbeatable at ANY art, Thats what Ive learned after 50 yrs. Its not always the art, sometimes its the teacher who is great...or the student! I have a lot of respect for Silat and all martial artists who do it. But at my age, I want to pick an art I enjoy doing,thats fun. You always stick with something thats more fun. Except for "Uncle Bill" Willem Drthaurus, whom is over 80, I see almost no old teachers in Indonesian arts. Thats a shame they havent figured out how to make the system more doable and flexible for the older guys like me. Plus I dont enjoy the Jurus. They confuse me. Im honest. Maybe Its past my time to do this art, as much as I love it.

    I love Maul's stuff and Silat in general, but I will say that the demonstration is suffering from your partner's reaction to those nerve hits. No offense, but he's either he's really hamming it up, or is too much of a weakling for fighting. I'm aware those nerves exist in the thigh, and are ideal places to strike with a knee, but that dude is really overreacting, both in terms of pain, and moving his own body.
