I have a jack chi and he is the most wonderful dog ever so was my shelty but this 1 is a cuddle bug
I love the videos! Just a recommendation from a 9 year veterinarian here: Most puppies shouldn't be going on long walks until about 6-8 months old depending on breed and size. JRT are usually fine by about the 6 month mark for longer walks, but extensive walks at early ages can result in developmental issues with the joints as they grow. For me, I would recommend no more than a quarter to half mile a day until that point. Each vet has different opinions, but this is usually the standard here in America. Looking forward to more videos!

Thanks for sharing that information. I thought she had an awfully big day adventuring with Foresty, but she seemed up to it. Good to have a vet guide them through her first year. And, she's adorable.

My 13 year old Maltese is going to pass away in the coming weeks. I've had her since she was 2 months old, we grew up together and she is my everything. I'm from the lower mainland, just got a 4x4 truck last summer and I was hoping to explore the rest of BC with her. Seeing you play with Rocko and her having so much energy and life brings a smile to my face. Thank you and I hope you and Rocko have many fun adventures ahead!

I’ve just had to say goodbye to my 16 year old dog who has been with me everyday since she was 12 weeks old we were never apart all day and night … it’s heartbreaking she left behind Inky my 6 year old rescue dog so together we are trying to be ok … the thing to remember is the love they give you and you give them is all that matters… look at the smiles on everyone’s face watching foresty so happy with Rocko and her new home to be full of adventures… this is the magic of dogs.. be strong when the time comes ❤️

I understand what you are going through, I get your pain. I lost my soulmate (see above) and although the grief does ease you never forget. All we can do is try to remember how blessed we are to have had that much love in our lives.

My wife and I were in BC/Alberta last week and I jokingly said “maybe we’ll see Foresty Forest.” We were sitting in traffic during the Highway 1 closure between Lake Louise and Golden, decided to turn around and detour, and holy crap, you were ~10 cars behind us. Had I noticed sooner, would have come over and said “hi.” As we were getting back on the highway in Golden, we crossed paths again…the detour took us the same time as if we’d just waited. Keep up the great content!
Be careful with your health! If the CO detector isn’t alerting you, the wood stove may still be stealing a lot of the oxygen in a confined space. I was a chimney sweep for 10 years, and I would recommend an outside air kit for the stove if possible.
I thought the woodstove had an outside air intake. If not, I think you've nailed it.

@@jakemanchester5139 That will work too, but usually people don’t want to open a window when it’s -30. An outside air kit connects directly to the stove. In most homes they come up through the floor.

The best puppy advice i ever got was to immediately take them outside every time they wake up from sleeping.this will save lots of mess

Great Advice , puppies have very small bladders , I would take my puppy out at least during the night , Small price to pay in the long run.
My lord she's adorable. Her little face in the back pack! Don't be afraid to take a longer break man, these huge hikes must take it outta you. We'll all still be happy to watch you and the pup just messing about in the van while you recover!!

I'd recommend taking her to a dog park or two if you go through a town just so she can get to know other dogs and can socialize a bit.
what if he meets a rich woman dog owner at the park and he gets married and shuts his channel down ..then would you have recomended that

if you socialize your dog at the local park, please make sure she has had all her shots. Dog parks can sometimes not be where you should take your dog
Please do not bring her around other dogs until she has gotten all her shots. With my pups, that not until around 4 months.

Something I'd like to share: she has a tiny developing bladder has to pee every 15- 20 minutes after hydration during waking hours. 🙂 And immediately when she wakes up and before bedtime. You probably know all this. But I didn't when I first became a puppy parent.

Oh teething lasts for first 7-9+ months so she'll need things to gnaw on ... and yeah the backpack works. I've done it w all my pups. They loved it, too.
But keep in mind puppies need to sleep 16+ hours Daily as they're growing Forest. And they need to develop their skeletal system and muscles...
She needs lots of hydration especially with high elevations.
Puppies need/ should eat 3-5 small meals a day for first 3-6+ months.
My adult dogs are VERY ACTIVE and I feed them snacks and lunch and have fresh water available at all times. And carry a gallon+ with us (just for them) during drier months... for a simple two hour excursion.

my 17 yo best friend was a black lab. 65 pounds of mean chasing everything that ran, machine. Mine left me in 2010 and life has sucked since. I am thankful to have had 1 dog and a few cats growing up, and then my hairy, four legged son, SHADOW for those 17 years after I left home. Dogs make life better.

When she's older you could get her one of those coats with spikes to protect her from wild animals when you hike. Kate Cloud has one for her little goat that she takes everywhere.

THIS! Necessity for small dogs in Alaska. Lots of raptors and eagles don't have great vision for size and will grab a dog, start to fly off and then drop them when they realize it's too big. I had a bald eagle eye my 38 lb cattle dog and even start to swoop down (had a vehicle that I was ready to shove him under). Spiked coat just means less worry.

Thanks for a great video, I didn’t want it to end so I’ve watched it several time. Rocko is going to be the best medical treatment you’ll get; she lifted my spirit while watching the video so she must be so uplifting for you. I showed the video to my mum who has dementia and she smiled throughout and we watched it together a second time. I’m looking forward to more videos to come. My only request is a longer video next time, and congrats on including Rocko in your continuing peak quest 😊

You won’t regret it man. When you bond for life with your dog it’s just as strong as bonding with your family. They take a lot (more emotionally than anything) but give back 10x the love and help.

Could be all the elevation change as well. Not just the peak climbs but even the driving and changing elevations every 30 secs. Couldn’t imagine being a pilot or flight attendant that goes up and down 30,000 feet a few times per day.

Rocko is absolutely precious and I personally have found there is nothing better for improving ones health is having an animal to give them the added boost to life.
Jack's are amazing companion dogs. I have a twelve year old jack, and I take her on all sorts of hikes, and she has no problem keeping up. VERY high energy, and very lovable. Welcome little Rocco! Glad you are on the mend Foresty!
JRT's are the best dogs. I had mine for 14 years before she passed last August. Smartest most loyal dog I've ever had. Never once needed a leash or even a collar. She stuck to me like glue. Take care of Rocko!

We had one 17 years. Best dog ever.
My boy was 18 when he passed. He loved to travel and hike when he was young. I wish he’d leash her so she doesn’t run off. Cute though and will be fun watching her grow.

Doggie might need her own sleeping bag. Easy to make: Get a small size down vest--turn it inside-out and sew the bottom and 2 arm holes closed. At least this worked for a West-highland terrier. :-)
Aw, baby Rocko! I found her origin story, yay! She was so adorable as a puppy (and she still is today)! Love that water bottle idea, but I have a hot water bottle for keeping my feet warm already so this just made me realize that I can use that when out and about in the cold with my little one. ❣

She’s so cool already! My only advice on crate training is to try giving her a treat every time you put her in there. She’ll start to associate it with the treats and learn to like it. I would also give it a name, and eventually she’ll learn to just go in there when you say.

Great advice. I would also make that place Rocko's exclusively. You loose some storage but Rocko gains a den and a place of sanctuary. Apologies Forest, every person and their dog is going to give you advice on whats best and what you're doing wrong - I don't want to be that person but i just did lol

We used to have three Jack Russel Terriers. Took them on many hikes and mountain biking rides. I think you picked the perfect breed for your lifestyle. They are awesome dogs.

I have never written a comment on a video, ever! But the level of cuteness of your pup... I have watched it 4 times... don't worry about vanning with a dog. I lived 2 years full time in a camper van with my dog that is a husky/lab mix so not exactly small. They adapt. They follow you wherever you take them. From the way she follows you, I see she is already connected to you and that's important and you are giving her everything she needs: attention, exercise, gentle discipline and training and so much love. You are doing everything right. Congrats to both of you finding each other. :)
I love how she made a noise when you said there might be cougars out there! She's so freaking adorable! I gasped when she tried to go in that hole, but then I thought, "Well, she's a terrier."

I had one who I used to take camping. They just can get distracted if they start chasing something. As you've probably heard they were bred for hunting rats. Mine knocked himself out once chasing a squirrel into bushes that had a brick wall behind them.
When she is so small you'll also have to watch for eagles.

Rocko is an excellent choice for your situation. After having much experience with the breed, when my ex and I were looking for a dog she suggested a Jack Russell. I told her no because I didn’t want a pet that was smarter than I was.

Watch for eagles, hawks, and owls also. In my county in Missouri, an owl picked up a full-size Daushound and carried over 15 miles, and dropped it in the middle of a highway. Luckily someone saw it drop and retrieved the do. The dog had a tag on his collar. He did have to go to the vet for tears in the skin.
Yes, this happens frequently with little dogs, especially when they are running in open areas (beaches, fields, etc). You can buy a kevlar vest for them if needed.
@@WTFwuzdat that Daushound weighed 15 pounds. He was a fatty. I was shocked. I have a 2.5lb Yorkie, 8 pound Yorkie, and 90 lbs husky hybrid. Theiny Yorkie hops around like a rabbit so we have to be right by her side when we take them out. The husky is very fast and would probably nail it before it would get off the ground. I recent seen a video of a golden eagle attacking and try to pick a 9 year old girl she weighed 60lbs. I couldn't believe my eyes.
@@adventurebythemile holy crap. That's insane! Hopefully the girl was okay. My dog is 42 lbs, blue heeler, but he is super aware of birds of prey. He likes to chase them and is a land shark. That bird wouldn't stand a chance.

A small tip for your great treatos- make sure that your peanut butter is xylitol free. It sneaks in to some commercial nut butters and is highly toxic to dogs. It's easy to make it yourself if you are unsure - just roasted unsalted peanuts and a little oil in a food processor or chopper until the desired texture is reached. If peanut butter/peanuts are scarce, almond butter/almonds are also a good choice. Hazelnuts can also be toxic.
Great choice on the pup. Also a proud Jack Russell dad for almost 10 years.. soooo much energy, but super clever and lots of fun to have around. We hike all over Italy together.
