Adding 4x4 is an easy fix, there is companies that will add 4x4 to your van and give you a smooth ride as well. Try U-joint, they are good at what they do.They will also add the correct springs to handle the extra weight that is needed for full time living.
That said I had a 4x4 SMB and I hated so much about it. Most of it was the build from sportsmobile, they suck at building out vans and that includes the top. The top leaked regardless of what I did to help fix it. Whatever you do don't ever buy a SMB with a 6.0 diesel engine in them no matter what so called "bullet proofing" they said they did. The 6.0 is by far the worst engine out there.
There is also companies that will and can put a fixed high top on your van as well.

Believe me we have looked into it!
Ujoint and quigley don't offer for pre 1992 body styles anymore, we are also fulltiming out of this rig so we dont have the time to have it in the shop for an extended period - plus the ford 302 in this Isn't exactly a powerhouse. If I was going to go to the trouble of adding 4x4 I would do an engine swap and put a manual transmission and upgrade the rear axle to a full float with an e-locker. By the time I have all of that done Ive spent more than the van itself is worth.
We agree that the sportsmobile fitout leaves a lot to be desired - especially in terms of cabinet quality and that awful blue vinyl that they put on EVERYTHING 😂
But we have had no issues with our pop top leaking but its been carefully looked after. I even took the whole thing apart to conceal the solar wires and upgrade all the hardware and crossbars etc. The only thing with ours is a couple tears in the clear vinyl windows 🤷‍♂

@@rangeless_ The 302 is a great engine, its an easy engine to rebuild to give it a few more ponies. Any decent 4x4 shop could give you exactly what you want in terms of 4x4. A dana 60 front end is the standard for all builds and springs are easy. Yes it would take you out of the van for a few weeks. I would find the right shop get a plan together with all parts needed then set them free to wrench when you take a trip somewhere for a couple of weeks. A fully equipped 4x4 van will retain way more value than you think. Document the build so people know what you did, that will be a great tool for the sale of it later. Ive got two shops alone in my little town that are well versed in building 4x4s. The hightop/fixed top might be the toughest part of that build, but if you search out wrecking yards for a good top built for that era you might have some luck.
I guess my idea is that you have a clean van, you know what you have and of course you know what you want....buying someone else's rig is just a big unknown. All good regardless, just tossing out ideas for ya!

@@TG-xo1uj Thanks for the ideas, our van is very clean - no rust - it was garage kept in utah for almost 30 years!
Ive spent the budget this year on it fixing it up and doing upgrades, new brakes, shocks, all the suspension bushings, steering gear, ignition module and computer, heater core, u joints, wheel bearings, solar install with new interior lighting, USBs for charging and hacking the starlink to run off the 12V, tune up + fluids changed as well as repairing the water system, toilet, refrigerator, furnace and water heater.
So it will be a while before we could afford to do any more improvements. BUT when we can 4WD is very high on the list!

@@rangeless_ Sounds like a great well thought out rig! Have a wonderful day!
