  • SOUTH PENNINES WALK FEATURING TOWNELEY PARK AND THE SINGING RINGING TREE
    "Trail to Towneley”
    Filmed 29th April 2017
    Post-production completed 10th June 2017
I find myself back in the South Pennines in Lancashire. My walk, which starts on the edge of Burnley, takes me along a little of the Burnley Way, eventually visiting the popular Towneley Park. The main reason for this walk, however, is the visit to the wonderful and unusual landmark that emits sounds as the wind blows through it, a structure known as the “Singing Ringing Tree”.....
Filmed in the South Pennines in the county of Lancashire. Locations include Towneley Park and the Singing Ringing Tree.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.

Until watching this video, I hadn't a clue what this object was, that turned out to be the Singing, Ringing Tree. I've obviously seen it on the introduction to your videos, but I never realised that it would be near Burnley. Anyhow it was most decent of you to climb up to the hillside where it is situated, and show us on close-up, what it consists of. The sound going through the tubes is unbelievable, and it didn't look very windy on your day. Imagine when there'd be a fair old storm! A stunning object, and a credit to the constructors, it is. The view from up there is marvellous too. Towneley Hall is a treasure in itself and it's associated park. Many thanks for this filming, Patrick.

This was another walk in my South Pennines circular walks book, and the look of the Singing Ringing Tree attracted me to film this one too. It was a lovely walk in itself from what I recall, but the Tree was just an amazing piece of sculpture to see, as well as the sound it made with those pipes. Thanks Ffranc as always for taking the time to watch and for all your great comments 👍

Thanks for that slightly strange memory brought back by this walk, Patrick!
Back in the 1990s I belonged to Belper Travel Society, who conducted coach excursions at very reasonable prices and there was one such excursion to Blackpool, which would have been around Illuminations time. There was something that made me make a special request to be let off the coach somewhere in Lancashire - although I have forgotten exactly where that was in the intervening decades! - from where I made my way by rail to Burnley. Somehow I found myself in Towneley Park, walking away from Burnley Town Centre and was overtaken by an urge to continue on walking. I clearly recall getting a very strong impression of how the walk gradually got wilder and wilder as I walked on, through Walk Mill then out on the Bacup Road, from where I re-traced my steps back to Burnley rail station. At length I caught up with the rest of the BTS in Blackpool in the dark of the evening, which was the ideal time to hit the town, for the coach back to Belper.
That's very good that you should have touched upon the subject of popular entertainment in the former Soviet Bloc via that installation 'The Singing Ringing Tree', which was named after the TV programme made in East Germany and which was part of the ongoing BBC Children's TV series 'Tales From Europe', especially since that's the subject of my two Blogs, 'Bananas For Breakfast', the Fan Blog for Valérie Čižmárová and 'Girls Of The Golden East'. Incidentally, another offering from 'Tales Of Europe', the Czechoslovak-made 'The Proud Princess' featured a much younger version of Miloš Kopecký, who would go on to be in the 1974 film in which a couple of Valérie Čižmárová's songs were played in the background and where she had a cameo role as a 'Singing River Sprite', ‘Jak utopit Doktora Mráčka aneb konec vodníku v Čechách’ ('How To Drown Doctor Mráček Or The End Of The River Sprites In The Czech Lands').
Finally, I note that that video would have been shot at a very significant time for me, my first-ever 'Bananas For Breakfast' Blog post having been just four days previous to your visit to Burnley.

I'd never heard of the Singing ringing tree but it was fantastic, well worth the walk to see it,it was a nice touch using the sound from it as the end credit music,I can't help but find it eerie though,it's a bit unsettling, but what a brilliant idea and sculpture.
There were lots of shots of you walking in this one Patrick,it must have taken such a lot of effort, each one involving you setting up the camera and tripod, setting it running, and then walking away from it to have to come back for it and do that bit of walk again, some of the shots, like over that footbridge with the great little V opening chain gate, you were quite a distance from the camera, and then you had to go back for it,carry it over the bridge, set it up at the far end, walk away yet again, and then film yourself walking towards it,all for a few seconds film, and you do this lots of times, hats off to you !
The hall and picnic area were nice, you certainly put the time in doing the research for it,I'm sure I speak for all your subscribers and viewers when I say we appreciate the effort.
    Thanks Patrick,all the best.
    Pete.

I found a photo of the Singing Ringing Tree in my South Pennines book of circular walks, so I just had to film it! It is very eerie, but a wonderful thing to see and hear, marvellous piece of sculpture. One of the reasons I film short walks is because I know I will be taking many shots of myself walking, so I allow for that. This walk was just under 5 miles, but by the time I've set the camera up, run into shot, walk past the camera, sometimes I have to do a re-take, then retrieve the camera, I've probably done more like 7 or 8 miles by the end! :) So I do take all that into consideration too. I am getting more subscribers, so that's very encouraging. There's always the odd comment now and then from someone who's rude or just critical about my work, but I suppose you're always going to get that. Thanks again Pete for all your comments and for watching :)

@@solitaryrambler I found you on youtube the other day and really do enjoy watching your videos. So pleased that you filmed this. Are you familiar with the writings of Matthew Delooze? I can remember him writing about this particular ringing thing, some years ago and the effect it had upon his psyche. After watching this video, I have to agree with him, the sounds coming from it are very creepy indeed.

Another great hike and the last in your intro list. I've really enjoyed this directed viewing, really enjoyed it. That singing ringing tree is definitely producing some haunting tones. I'm not one for modern art but this one was really nice. How far away can you hear it from? Thanks again for the list Patrick, I've watched each one from beginning to end thoroughly enjoyed it.

Glad you enjoyed it Chris. I got this route out of the Pathfinder Guide of South Pennines walks and saw the photo of the Singing Ringing Tree, so had to get up here to film this walk. not sure how far away you can here it, but I'm sure the noise carries some way considering the location of the sculpture on the hill. Thanks for watching these films Chris 👍
