I am a real estate Photographer, this camera Canon AE-1 Program was a given to me yesterday as a gift by homeowners who wanted to thank me for helping them sell their home. The camera is literally in mint condition. Very grateful and thankful.

My grandpa gave this exact model of camera as a present to my mom and her brother like in the early 90s. They just passed it on to me. I’m super excited to start snapping photos of the family so that I can one day pass them on to my children. Thank you for your tutorial. It took a lot of the guess work out of it!

I just picked one of these up for $40 earlier today! 9/1/22
Didn’t come w/ a battery and no department stores had any in stock. So I negotiated the price down to $40, leveraging the fact that I couldn’t test any of the functions. The mirror was clean, the light seals weren’t disintegrated, hardly any cosmetic scuffs and it was clean af. So i took a chance. Put a battery in it and BOOM it came to life! All the dials and buttons work properly. Haven’t had the chance to run film through it yet. Fingers are CROSSED! It’s going to be my first experience w/ a film camera, coming from a Sony a6000 w/ a Sony G 18-105mm f4 and a 7 artisans 35mm f1.2. Wish me luck!

Great you enjoy using this body. My main film bodies for years were A-1, T70 and T90. I have also used AE-1P but was underwhelmed by it. The T70 is functionally similar but has an incredibly easy to use exp lock button which AE-1P/A-1 also has but is slow and inconvenient in comparison. The T70 also has a partial metering option which saved me on many occasions.

My grandpa had a film camera that he gave to me but it was broken without him knowing and a friend of mine gave me his to try out and was broken as well. Long story short the local photo shop owner gave me his old AE-1 program for free and also all the bells and whistles for it to work and I didn't even have to pay $100 out of pocket for it. I'm glad that I have one now and can't wait to develop my first roll of film soon.

The AE-1 was the camera we used in the Army CID. It was a strange beast with its shutter-preferred system. It also wouldn't tolerate rough handling and had a very delicate lens mount compared to the beastly Nikon construction. But, the optics were excellent. The AE-1 replaced the far more expensive and bulletproof Leica and Rollei cameras. I remember turning those cameras into the PDO (Property Disposal Office) only to see them begin destroying them. They drove a #2 screwdriver through the lens and film back with one whack? Reason? Flooding the market with so many cameras was detrimental to company sales. Although I doubt the taxpayer would understand.

    Hi. A question.
When I use the light meter it only changes when I change the speed, but not when I change the aperture. I can have an exposure at 1.4 and 1/250 and the light meter shows me the same exposure as 22 and 1/250. It only changes when I change the speed.
The light meter only works properly when I press the stop down lever. There you can see when the aperture changes in the lens and there the light meter varies with speed and aperture.
Only the lightmeter changes and recognise the aperture and speed shutter when i press depth of field button.
Do you know why it is? my lens is a fd 50 1.4

You can use any 35mm sometimes referred to as 135 film. Color or black and white. The palmist popular one nowadays is Portra 400 by Kodak. Just make sure it’s 35mm/135 film. A cheaper option would be colorplus 200. My favorite black and white film is Tri-x by Kodak and Hp5 by Ilford. By locally if you can otherwise b&h photo has the best online prices. Avoid Amazon. It’s a rip off.

@@DaveMontejano just trying to do my bit to bring people back to the good life before the year 2000. I thought about it the other day and I would say nearly every aspect of life has gone downhill ever since. Part of life back then was hanging out at the local photo shop. That experience is now extinct! The amount of people I socialized with, just over photography was immense!

So I just purchased this camera. Unfortunately I am having trouble with the original lens. I can't get the cover off the bottom of it. I have looked for multiple videos and can't find any that are helpful, or that show the original lens. I was wondering if you had any tips on how to get it off?

I hate those caps on the older canon lenses. Sometimes it feels like they are stuck. I usually push down while I turn.

It still isn’t coming off. I’ll have to take it to a camera shop. Thank you!
