    Way back in the day a first class passenger went crazy on a DC10 when refused further alcohol. He proceeded to rampage about the first class cabin including, shall I say "pooping" on top of the serving cart. Flight was diverted to Omaha and cancelled. A plea deal was reached with a local judge who did his homework. To avoid felony charges he agreed to pay ALL charges incurred by the airline. That included fuel, landing fees, hotel rooms for passengers and crew, loss of revenue etc. The icing on the cake was that he had to handwrite a letter of apology to everyone involved. That included every crew member, passenger, ATC controller, law enforcement, EMT etc. that responded. Sometimes the punishment does fit the crime.

    Interesting video for me. I’m a dispatcher for “air shuttle” (Mesa airlines) so it was a nice surprise to see them - though shouldn’t be a surprise because IAD is one of our UAX bases. :) I did find it odd that the DAL flight requested runway 30 because that’s normally only for departures (you’d noticed all the other flights going to the 1s). But the winds report explained why they opted for that since they’d still be pretty heavily leadened with fuel coming from Boston. That’d give them an excellent headwind.

    • @VASAviation
      @VASAviation  Před 4 lety

      All other flights were going for 30 too. Then they changed the configuration of the airport to 1s.

    • @merrychild
      @merrychild Před 4 lety

      VASAviation - ah. I saw that, but I wasn’t sure as I was interpreting the radar correctly as I use a different software at work and currently primarily dispatch my regionals other fleet that doesn’t go to IAD. But It’s pretty rare from my experience so far that they use 30 for arrivals unless the wind is too much for the 1/19s - which it must’ve been with the gusts.

  • @speedlever
    @speedlever Před 4 lety +46

    That’s a significant crosswind on the landing runway! 40 degree crosswind at 25 gusting to 37.

    • @darrylr.4983
      @darrylr.4983 Před 4 lety +8

      At max gust of 37 that's a 24 knot crosswind component. Most airliners can handle 29 knots, some even higher than that.

    • @merrychild
      @merrychild Před 4 lety +1

      It’s a significant head wind too and rwy 30 at IAD is pretty much only used for departures (even with a tailwind - due to nearby DCA and all the no fly zones in dc). My airlines aircraft heading in there at the time of this incident can handle a xwind component of 30 (crj7) and 28 (e175) as long as the rwy is dry. So the component was well within the range of my small regional jets. :)

    • @dylant6273
      @dylant6273 Před 4 lety

      Yah 30 is only used for landings when winds are from Northwest and at least 20-25 kts, anything less and they'll throw you on 1R or 1C... interesting side note the airport wants to build another runway parallel to the current rnwy 30, making 30 R and 30L

    Sometimes people get into their personal chemistry kits and mix prescription drugs with alcohol and it gets really ugly. However, epileptic seizures. usually are followed by a period of sleep or confusion. I have dealt with both of these situations while airborn. The drug/ alcohol combo usually results in dreadful behavior, while seizure patients rarely are anything.other than confused. Alot of times, people don't remember how much "anxiety " medicine they have taken, so they take way too much and have too much too drink on top of that. Bad for everyone in splatter distance.

Unruly passengers are usually drunk beforehand , as well as being of low calibre, aggressive types? Love that both controllers ask pilots to confirm the gate! Apparently impossible to pass the information on internally, or to ask the airline. • @HeidiKohne
      @HeidiKohne Před 4 lety +1

      "Impossible" may not be the case, but it is very difficult for the ATC to communicate with an airline's operations, especially while there is other traffic for them to deal with. Gates are leased and managed by the individual airlines, not the port authority (at least at most airports). It's much easier and less load managment for the pilots to communicate with their ops, especially when ops gets very involved with a lot of aspects of a plane when they have to divert (getting it fueled, potential crew timeouts, towing it out of the gate, dealing with potential hotel vouchers if it was a mechanically-caused overnight delay, etc.). In terms of the two controllers asking for the gate, it's hard for me to gauge that.

    FAA can fine a unruly,disruptive,drunk,passengers up to $ 37,000.00.My view is tickets should have this information so all passengers will know how serious this is.384 reports of problem passengers in 2021.My nephews son is a Captain for DELTA and he was leaving Detroit Metro for Atlanta with 148 passengers.He was already on the runway waiting for clearance from the tower,and one of the fllight attendants called him and said,"We have a drunken female who just vomited on the gentleman sitting ahead of her and it went in his hair,down his neck & back.There are 3 passengers sitting across from her who are gagging from the smell.So after returning to the gate,and overhead luggage removed along with checked baggage and 148 passengers to a clean plane the flight was delayed 60 minutes.I am sure there were many who may have missed their connecting flights.

    • @ssbohio
      @ssbohio Před 4 lety +3

      It depends on the underlying reason. If there was a medical problem, the airline usually eats the cost of diverting. If the problem was voluntary, then suing the passenger is a distinct possibility.

    Is there a reason why they picked IAD over DCA?

    • @andycheng9066
      @andycheng9066 Před 4 lety +1

      D J probably because IAD is the main airport serving Washington DC , and is also able to handle larger aircraft. Dulles has 4 runways and 135 gates, while DCA has 3 runways and 46 gates
