The TRUTH behind Medical Training, a TEDx Documentary

  • Join me on one of the most important days of my life, my TED Talk at UGA. Documentary produced, filmed, and edited by the talented @NDMD
As a doctor, I help people rebuild their lives and improve their health and well-being. I love being a doctor. But I cannot say that I love medical training. I have watched countless enthusiastic future doctors, future healers, enter medical training only to be broken down physically, mentally, emotionally.
Every few weeks, I see a post discussing how ANOTHER resident doctor ended their life by suicide due to a culture that worked them to the bone and silenced them when they tried to seek help.
Many future doctors believe that entering medicine will make them healers, but the great irony is that medical training generates far more mental health sufferers than it does healers.
But what if we could change our medical education system, REVAMP it, MODERNIZE it, HUMANIZE it? We would not only improve the health of doctors, but most importantly dramatically improve patient care.

It took a village to get to this stage. First, thank you to my parents who sat with me when I wrote the first word of this speech and cheered me on as I spoke the final sentence. Thank you to my wife, Dr. Arianna Heyer, who relentlessly supports my dreams and is my rock and home. Thank you to Dr. Doug Sirutis, who helped write key parts of the speech and provided expert editing & guidance along the way. To an inspiration, Dr. Laura Vater, whose voice encourages me to take a stand and fight for a healthier culture in medicine, I look up to you. To Andy Nguyen, thank you for capturing memories that will last forever. To my TEDx student curation team, Victoria, Jereme, Danny, Gracie, Morgan, & Mary who helped guide me through 14 speech drafts (and 2 pivots), thank you. To my family, friends, and mentors who supported in person & on the livestream, I felt your energy the whole time. To my therapist, thank you for everything. To everyone who took time out of their day to listen and provide pivotal feedback as I practiced my speech over the last few weeks, thank you. To the future doctors who I hope this talk impacts the most, you will be the ones that change medicine for good. Believe in yourself, stand together, and use your collective voice. Thank you for letting me play a part in your journey. And finally, to my 20 year old self, who sat in the back row of TEDxUGA a decade ago, dreaming about my future self taking that stage, we did it. It came full circle. Grateful beyond measure for every single one of you.

As a psychiatrist who has his own personal history with depression, watching everything you do makes me so hopeful for the future of our profession. People like you are the voices that can spur greater change for the future of medicine as a whole, and share good things widely. Keep at it.

Jake, I've watched you for a while now, but dude this hit me in a way no other video has ever. I'm 17 years old, and I've dreamt of being a pediatrician since I was in elementary school. I would be lying to you if I said I wasn't scared about what my future is going to hold, but hearing you speak so openly about the issues in medicine has really encouraged me. Even though I'm only in highschool, I am already taking steps to help me get that acceptance letter. I hope that medical training will improve and gain even more attention by the time I get there, but you have been a huge inspiration to me. Mental health has been something I've struggled with for a while, and taking on something so unfamiliar, something so scary, something that was created to make me fail seems almost impossible. I've been seconds away from ending my life. I'm in recovery for eating disorders. I have ADHD. I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD after a school shooting. But you Jake, you are opening the eyes to many like me, who are only starting down this road. You're showing the next generation of doctors that struggling does not mean that you will fail. Thank you Jake. I cannot wait to see what you do for this profession, and I hope one day that I will be able to fight this fight with you. I hope you get to read this and know that you are not just helping people in med school, residency, and attendings, but you are also helping those of us who are running on a dream.

It's been a year since my dad vehicular incident, I still remember being in hospital looby while waiting for emergency physician to attend to my dad, I was there in shock while looking for my dad's the blood coming from his head. He had a traumatic brain injury, after his surgery we happen to observe changes in his behaviors, it's as if we lost the dad we always knew, but were coping and I really hope to help in full recovery, his health back. This and we move on to the next, weeks ago I lost my grandmother, she suffered aneurysm, after successful neurosurgical operation we really hope for her recovery that the whole family did what's needed in a home nursing care setting. After a year or so monitoring her condition and we lost her after having community acquired pneumonia. By the way, I'm Mac, currently using my sister account, we're both aspiring medical doctors.Thank you Dr. Jake Goodman, sending my congratulations and gratitude for this of your work, I for one is an aspiring physician-lawyer from the Philippines and thinking of the possibilities of specializing in both neurosurgery and psychiatry as an IMG, you and your channel, your mental health advocacies always been part of my inspiration! 🇵🇭👨‍⚕️⚕️🚑👨‍⚖️

Thank you so much for your honesty and transparency in your videos Jake. There is this strange assumption that doctors or mental health professionals are invincible when it comes to mental health struggles.

Thank for the video. I really enjoyed the video. Medicine is becoming toxic those days. I want to go to medical school and there are times where I want to give up and feel down and depressed. I am going though want you experienced 8 years ago. By watching this video I am still having a positive attitude that one day I will end up being a doctor. I will not let anything turn me away. I recently got diagnosed with ADHD and I am taking medication for ADHD. Someone told me that you cannot go to medical school because you have ADHD. ADHD has gotten in my way of going to medical school because I always fail tests. I am not going to let ADHD stop me from becoming a doctor. Thank you Jake Goodman for inspiring people like me and relating to my situation.

I used to cry waking up and sleep crying for beyond 5 months of beginning residency everyday. I begged my parents to allow me to leave medical school. Told them I get thoughts of ending my life . They didn’t take me seriously.
I was even told I’m weak when one of my male senior physical assaulted me. My consultants didn’t support me. No action was taken against him.
I wish I could get the help I needed. I’m building myself again. I love being around my patients . I want to help people so I didn’t quit . But when I’m out of here I’ll definitely speak against the medical system which kills hope and humanity. Im from India.

Keep going Sir/Ma'am. One day, you'll have the opportunity to save a patient's life and they'll appreciate you for the rest of their life. I am also going through the same pain, but I know I have the willpower to go against everything that comes my way because I know that I'll also have the opportunity to save one's life. One day, you'll become a patient as well. Would you want a Doctor who did not go through hardships? Because that's what brings the Doctors closer to their patients, because they went through a lot of hardship, and many understand the struggles of patients. If a Doctor does not know hard-ship, it would be very hard for them to empathize with their patients. I hope you are still fighting for your dreams.
