The song is metaphor of life. The old gambler gives advice to the young gambler then dies at the end of the song.

It is a metaphor for how to survive "life" in the song of a gambler. " On a train heading no where." what a line for young people whose life seems to be going no where. When you listed to country music, it always tells a story, but you need to keep the "metaphor" in mind because country music is always filled with metaphors...like Hotel California by the Eagles, which is a metaphor for the country / movie industry that pulls you in with money, greed, sex, addition.
