I think this is one of the very few times where the "villians" actually win. The coachman gets his way, and John and Giddy get their pay. And disney didn't even go as far as the book did, and it's still pretty powerful stuff!

There was originally going to be a scene where John & Gideon get arrested. I guess it wouldn't have added much of anything to the story Walt wanted to tell?

    • @shermanvermin76
      @shermanvermin76 Před 9 lety +16

+Gyarrekshi (and Frank) Some people deny the existence of the scene where Honest John and Gideon get arrested, which implies that, as I keep saying, even if they were villains, when they knew how evil the Coachman was, they felt 'no, we can't trick Pinocchio again!' This implies the duo actually wasn't evil - they were merely, at this point, following an oath they made to the Coachman.
This implies they were, this time, going to let Pinocchio go home to Geppetto, and to school, and not blow his second chance (as well as keep his word). I'd say, consequently, it was more the Coachman's fault, than Honest John and Gideon's, that Pinocchio fell for the bait of going to Pleasure Island.

I never got the impression that Honest John and Giddy were particularly bad either, just forced by their situation to do bad things to survive. They may TALK like they're tough shit if it means finding work (I.E. implying that they'll MURDER for the right price), but if they were truly without any kind of morality, I doubt they'd be so uncomfortable with getting involved with Pleasure Island, and the horrible stories about what happens to their youthful patrons.

@@anthonysimpsonanygoround8749 Possibly Charles Judels (both Stromboli *and* the Coachman) voiced the third of the Pleasure Island barkers - those wooden Native American statues, in the Tobacco Row (the clown barker, voiced by Don Brodie, was additionally the barker of the ‘Model Home Open for Destruction’, albeit talking offscreen; the beer was inside the pool hall, hence it’s unknown how all the boys - only one who was named, because he was a talking donkey - Alexander, who were on the boat, got the beer).
I’m still aware that these were the five things that caused that terrifying donkey transformation - the junk food (the first of two things that the clown barker gave, when talking onscreen), the fighting (done in the Rough House, featuring that statue whose voice was identical to Popeye’s), the Cuban cigars (thrown by the wooden Native American statues in the Tobacco Row), the vandalism (done in the ‘Model Home Open for Destruction’, where, as said above, was additionally given by the clown barker, where it was talking offscreen) and, of course, the beer. These were the five things that caused the boys on the boat (including the only one named - Alexander), Lampwick and Pinocchio, to get turned into donkeys (I’m now aware why Pinocchio’s donkey ears and tail were grey, whereas all the boys became brown donkeys - it was a colour code, where Pinocchio was a puppet made of wood, hence grew grey ears and a tail, whereas any boys, made of flesh, would become brown donkeys. Most of all, Pinocchio only grew ears and a tail because, having Jiminy Cricket, he was able to get off the island, before undergoing further transformations. He definitely would have completely turned into a donkey, like all the other boys, and Lampwick, had he stayed longer on the island, hence Jiminy Cricket said ‘before you get any worse’ and ‘before they see us’).
Basically, any of the things that were *bad* to do, are what caused the donkey transformation (leading to the unsolved mystery, that you possibly *won’t* get turned into a donkey if you *don’t* do anything bad on the island). The fat inflatable policeman, next to the clown barker (that gave *two* things - the junk food and the ‘Model Home Open for Destruction’), wouldn’t have done anything to cause the donkey transformation, as it never says anything, nor did playing pool cause the transformation, contrary to popular belief. Jiminy’s only problem with Pinocchio playing pool was he (Jiminy) saw it like (which he was implying to Pinocchio) it wasn’t the time for playing pool, when the puppet should be at home (where Jiminy thinks about how Pinocchio has made his dad - Geppetto - feel).
Even if you don’t inhale the smoke, from Cuban cigars (you do the opposite - exhale it) [these are what Pinocchio, Lampwick and all the boys on the boat - including the only one named - Alexander - were smoking, not cigarettes], not only are they still age restricted (in that they’re still not for under 18s), but, most of all, they’re not healthy to make a habit of smoking, as, even if you don’t inhale the smoke, they can still (depending on how much you smoke them) harm your lungs, and, eventually, be fatal (they can actually give you *mouth* cancer, even though you exhale the smoke). They should only be smoked in moderation, like on special occasions (oh, and if you do make a habit of smoking them, they’ll become addictive, just *like* cigarettes) [hence only smoke them the way I’ve said, and, of course, if 18 and over]. I still ask myself if the Coachman smoked a *pipe*, rather than a Cuban cigar, to avoid getting transformed into a donkey.
Sorry, not only for the length of my comment, but additionally for going off subject from your comment (I just wanted to point out that there were *three* barkers of Pleasure Island, and my awareness of this movie, especially my awareness of what exactly caused the donkey transformation, which some people might not know exactly what caused it).

@@michaelweech6432 Your comments were quite interesting. I know the recent 2022 remake didn’t use the idea of Honest John suggesting Pinocchio needed a vacation and duping him into going to Pleasure Island, and I thought the original version was clever since he and Gideon were in cohoots with the Coachman (and of course none of them get their comeuppance). Instead, the Coachman suggests Pleasure Island to Pinocchio, and arriving there we don’t see the sins or substances you mentioned above, although it could be implied that there may be an added ingredient to the root beer everyone is drinking, and instead of the model home for destruction Pinocchio is shown at one point taking out his aggression on some carved clocks in a little bit of a psychological twist!

None of the Beatles were born when this movie was made (two were born months after this movie was made - July and October 1940), but they (and especially their animated ‘Yellow Submarine’ counterparts, even if they weren’t voiced by the Beatles themselves) [made when this movie was 28 years old, and made 13 years after Disney’s ‘Lady and the Tramp’, which was made one year after the Merrie Melodies cartoon ‘Muzzle Tough’; I’m aware the band broke up by the 70s, hence only lasted one decade - the 60s] definitely should be at Pleasure Island, and doing something to get all the poor boys’ transformation reversed (I’m aware what the Beatles would all be like, to see the poor boys, on Pleasure Island, turned into donkeys, even if they had done naughty things).
The Beatles would definitely like seeing Pinocchio with his friend Lampwick (yes, they too would hate seeing Lampwick get turned into a donkey, no matter what he was like on the island); not only would the Beatles (and rightfully so) detest the Coachman, but they’d feel the same about Stromboli (who, IMO, are still the movie’s worst two villains, worse even than Honest John and Gideon). This would lead the Beatles to ask themselves who their worse enemies are - the Blue Meanies, or Stromboli and the Coachman. The last two Beatles were born 2-3 years after this movie was made.

2:26 the king arthur carousel should have a more band organ like sound. This would fit very well

Actually, there was originally a Wurlitzer 157 band organ at that carousel originally, which was later sold but the facade is still there. Afterwards music was piped in from the Gavioli band organ which is in a showcase behind the Dumbo ride. More recently only recordings of the Gavioli are used, but at least it’s nice to know that even if not operating the organ is still on display and presumably maintained.
The instrument heard as the kids arrive at Pleasure Island in Pinocchio (1940) is actually not a band organ but a calliope (with high pitched steam whistles) and a calliope is also heard in a few scenes of Dumbo (1941) since it was often used in circus parades and fairground attractions.

“Swinging Shutters” is the opening music, later used in the Nintendo Game. A couple of deleted songs are briefly heard at 1:33-“Three Cheers for Anything” and at 3:05-“Honest John”. For some reason the vocal on “Hi Diddle Dee Dee” is not used, but the original version, including the sound effects of the boat whistle & cheering kids, is on the longer 26 min. issue of the original vinyl record album.

@@TBONE_2004 and, later, in the pool hall (after the ‘model home open for destruction’, where, this time, the clown barker was talking offscreen), there was the fifth thing that turned the boys (not just Lampwick and Pinocchio - all the other boys, on the boat, and only one who was named - Alexander) into donkeys - the beer (as users have said the first thing the clown barker says, when talking onscreen - when it was giving Pinocchio, Lampwick and all the other boys, on the boat - including Alexander, the junk food, about ‘the Rough House’, featuring that statue who sounded identical to Popeye, where all the boys on the boat - including Alexander, and Pinocchio and Lampwick did fighting, and the ‘Tobacco Row’, featuring those wooden Native American statues, throwing out Cuban cigars, to the boys - including Alexander, and to Pinocchio and Lampwick).
Yes, the ‘model home’ (open for destruction) is where the countless boys, on the boat, including Alexander (the only one named), and Lampwick and Pinocchio, did vandalism (the Cuban cigars, that Lampwick and Pinocchio smoked, at the pool hall, when all the other boys - including Alexander, were on the boat, were definitely the same ones given to them by those wooden Native American statues, in the ‘Tobacco Row’).
The first boy, on the boat (who couldn’t even say his name, as he could no longer talk, hence got his clothing stripped, and put into a crate, sold to the salt mines) [another crate said ‘sold to the circus’, definitely did all five of the things that caused him to transform into a donkey - eating that junk food (the first thing the clown barker gave him, when it was talking onscreen), fighting (given to him in ‘the Rough House’, featuring that statue whose voice sounds identical to Popeye’s), smoking those Cuban cigars (that those wooden Native American statues, in the ‘Tobacco Row’, threw out), the other thing the clown barker gave him (when, this time, talking offscreen) - the vandalism (done at the ‘Model Home Open for Destruction’) and drinking beer. Lampwick definitely did all five of these things, hence he got transformed into a donkey, as did Pinocchio (I’m aware why he only grew ears and a tail - he had Jiminy Cricket, hence he was able to get off the island quickly, before he underwent further transformation, which definitely would have happened had he stayed on the island, exactly why Jiminy said ‘before you get any worse’ and ‘before they see us’).
I’m additionally (finally) aware why Pinocchio grew grey donkey’s ears, and a grey donkey’s tail, rather than brown - it was a colour code, where any boys, who went to the island, and were human, became brown donkeys, whereas Pinocchio, who was a puppet made of wood, became a grey donkey.
Sorry about the length of my comment, but I just wanted to give my awareness of this (nearly 83 year old) movie, and, most of all, my awareness of what exactly caused the donkey transformation (I’m aware it had five causes, but, basically, anything that was bad to do on the island would have caused it).

Kyle Hill Yes- but it’s actually a brief segment from a deleted song “Honest John” which was recorded by some pop singers of the period, and can be heard on the DVD. Pinocchio had other deleted songs too, heard sometimes briefly in the background music.

The Beatles (again, preferably their 1968 animated ‘Yellow Submarine’ counterparts) [even if not voiced by the Beatles themselves] would additionally have been nice to Lady (from a Disney movie that would be released 15 years ahead from this one - Lady and the Tramp), like they would have been to Pinocchio (and, not only would they have hated Stromboli and especially that Coachman, but nor would they have liked Aunt Sarah and the dog catcher). I’m aware ‘Lady and the Tramp’ was released one decade *before* the Beatles were formed (same as none of them were born when *this* movie was released, even though, months after it was, Ringo and John were born; this movie was released 2 years before Paul was born, and 3 years before George was born) [yes, I’m aware what order the Beatles were born in, from oldest to youngest]. The Beatles would definitely have been as nice as this movie’s Geppetto, and Jim from ‘Lady and the Tramp’ (and I’ve read, which *is* correct, that, not once, do Geppetto and Jiminy Cricket see each other, in this movie).
