  • This is a video of the unboxing and first start up of my new Suzuki DF2.5 4 stroke outboard motor. Up until now I'd been using a Yamaha 2.5 4 stroke outboard motor as my backup engine whilst out in my inflatable boat. I always like to take a backup engine just in case the main outboard fails which it has in the past. Unfortunately my Yamaha backup outboard motor has developed a fault which I am unable to resolve quickly hence the new Suzuki outboard. I decided on the Suzuki DF2.5 4 stroke outboard motor after purchasing a Suzuki 6hp 4 stroke a couple of years back and being really impressed by it.
Setting up the Suzuki outboard motor was straightforward after the unboxing, just oil and fuel to add then you are good to go. This outboard motor would not start initially then I noticed fuel running into the test tank I was using. The supplier has forgotten to tighten up the carb drain plug after performing the PDI inspection and testing.
The running in process is as follows. Run the outboard motor (not in gear) for 5 minutes to warm it up. The running in process is for the first 10 hours of use. Then for 15 minutes run the outboard motor at idling speed or in gear at idling speed. The next 1 hour and 45 minutes run at half throttle or less (although the manual does day you can go over this temporarily to get the boat on the plane as long as you return to half throttle or less straight after). For the next hour you can run the outboard motor up to three quarter throttle. For the remaining 7 hours you can run at any speed as long as you don't use full throttle for continuously more than 5 minutes at a time.
The Suzuki 2.5hp outboard motor should be a good replacement for the Yamaha although I'll probably repair the Yamaha 2.5hp outboard and keep that as well. But for now the Suzuki DF 2.5hp 4 stroke will serve as my auxiliary outboard motor and I look forward to taking it out on the sea for testing.
