I myself am half Mexican, and half Irish. Dad is from County Cork, and the town of Mallow. One thing that surprised me is how this song is known in Mexico as well. The people of Mexico that know their history honor the Irish because of the Battalion of St. Patrick(El Batallón de San Patrició) who helped on behalf of the Mexican army during the Mexican American war. While ultimately the Mexican side lost, the hardest faught battles were those with the Irishmen fighting along side. So This song is known and played in modern celebrations of St. Patrick's day. In many cases the Irish were the first Europeans to fight on behalf of marginalized groups in the Americas. And with a LONG history of being invaded and colonized(from the vikings, to the Normans in 1169) There is a very very long history of the Irish fightong against oppressive occupiers who engaged in cultural erasure. So there is an inherent sympathy i feel.

☘🇮🇪🍀 The Easter Rebellion 1916: The Irish rose up against hundreds of years of English occupation. End result: Ireland is partitioned, the North remains part of the UK ( Northern Ireland, United Kingdom), the south becomes a free state, 6 December 1922, the Republic of Ireland. This is a beautiful version of the song! The Chieftains are an incredible Irish folk group!!! You'd love their version of "The Long Black Veil" with MICK JAGGER. Most Irish folk music does have a martial or haunting aire. The history of Ireland is filled with war, grief & loss, & much our the music reflects it. Èirinn go Brách!!! (Erin go Bragh: Ireland Forever!)🍀🇮🇪☘

I'd read fairly extensively on Irish history, but when I went from Texas to Dublin in the 90s and went to the General Post Office, where they'd made their stand in 1916.... Man, the distance between that building and the Liffey River, where the British gunboats were firing from at the end, was *nothing.* A couple of blocks. They couldn't miss. They've obviously restored the building, but they left the pockmarks on the pillars out front, and it makes an impression. And the guys in that building were teachers, playwrights, journalists... They all looked like school faculty, calling out and fighting the British. And they knew what was coming. Big, huge ones on those guys.

I am glad that watching Conor McGregor seems to have brought you to appreciate Sinead - and no you are NOT pronouncing it correctly its Shin - Aid. IThe videos are - as someone has pointed out - a mix from "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" and "Michael Collins" - both great movies. Much of the fooootage used in the video is actually from Michael Collins and the scenes from the post 19222 Civil War when Pro and Anti-Treaty Irish turned against each other. Read up some more on the Easter Rising and the heroes of 1916 - WB Yeats Poem - Easter 1916 might be a good place to start. "I write it out in a verse-
    MacDonagh and MacBride
    And Connolly and Pearse
Now and in time to be,
    Wherever green is worn,
    Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born." WB Yeats
These men are considered martyrs for the cause in the Republic of Ireland.
The Easter Rising was merely the latest to that point in a the series of struggles between England and Irish for 800 years.
It is much more complex than just a 6 day upriosing and way more than can be covered in a Wikipedia entry. But - as I said - I am happy it has sparked your interest.
