backstory is still a story its just a story that happened in the past as opposed to happening in the present

The shot of him standing in the middle of the field with the forest on one side (representing freedom) and the city on the other side (representing his mission) was an amazing image to see. Just goes to show that bastion has his demons as well, even though he was programmed as a killing machine.

+The Batman He was made to kill but now his mission ia over but he's still made for killing. Fighting against his purpose, his program, his mission and the chance to live in peace. Kind of reminds me to an extent of Soldiers. you may come back alive but you're never the same, their will always be that part of you that is tainted by blood and their is still that part of you that wants nothing to do with that life anymore and those to side struggle with each other.
He wasn't made to kill, but he was turned against the humans in the Omnic Crisis.

It wasn't Reinhardt. There was a big group of people who wore the same armor. Reinhardt wasjust a part of that group.

Watching this almost made me cry. Love these Overwatch Animations and the reaction was priceless. Another awesome video Bunny! They really need to make an Overwatch movie after watching these!
Time for some lore : Bastion unit Echo 54 did not see battle in germany (where the short film takes place) becouse command center of omnics was destroyed by german army and Crusaders (Reinhardt) that made last stand in Eichenwalde (new map) where they defended castle(this is also resting place of leader of the crusaders (friend and brother in arm of Reinhardt)). Only the shadow of Bastion unit strikes fear to people of the germany and no wonder since minigun on Bastions back can fire around 1800 bullets a minute. This is the reason all basttion units that were not destroyed in battle were disassembled. Bastion unit Echo 54 regained consciousness and first thing it saw was not hostile (nature) but imagine what would happen if it come to the city. Aggresive reactions of people would make Bastion unit take them as hostile and emininated the threat. That bird saved lots of people.
And i'm guessing the flashback he saw wasn't his. It was the dead Bastion's memory, and The Last Bastion basically accessed his memory. This would explain why it was so easy for Bastion to be peaceful.

Yes if you noticed there was a castle on the clip. That is Reinhard's home.
The new map called Eichenwalde plays in germany, where Rheinhardt comes from. At 4:37 you can see a big part of the map Eichenwalde, the castle Eichenwalde, in the background.
When you play ON the map on the other hand and you look into the distance you can see the city from 4:46. So yeah, the timing for the map's unveiling and this cinematic short is no coincidence.
I'm pretty certain that either they just saved this cinematic up for this purpose and there will be more things coming out together at BlizzCon. I'm guessing it's a new hero, a short and a new map that are all in connection with each other. To be more specific: Sombra, Reaper Short and some map I don't know, but that's connected with those twos background story.

I don't know what's going on, but a robot learning to be human is a much more emotionally thrilling story than anything else, examples: Wall-E, Chappie, and now this. I don't know if it's the child like curiosity and logic that the characters in these films have, but god damn does it make an emotional impact on everyone.
Bastion units where the front line soldiers for the Omincs during the Omnic Crisis, a world war between humans and the Omnics that were originally made to serve humanity. This short is set in Germany near the map released at the time, Eichenwalde. If you haven't seen the latest Overwatch short yet or haven't read up on Overwatch lore/history, a key part of the original war took place in Eichenwalde when Balderich von Adler, the Leader of the Crusaders, turned the tide of war in Germany by clearing the Omnics out of Eichenwalde. The Bastion we play in the game, AKA the Bastion in this short, never actually took part of the war. Something occurred and he remained inactive for almost a decade until some unknown source (presumably Sombra due to the ARG before her release) reactivated him. He then wandered Northern Europe until Torbjorn came upon him, saw his innocent nature, and took Bastion under his wing just to figure out how Bastion ended up the way he is.
If you were asking yourself the question, Yvain Gnabro was one of the animators, and he dies in a motorcycle accident.
He was an awesome animator, worked for Blur (LoL cinematics trailers for example) before Blizzard.

this trailer was so heart warming and amazing i also love the memory of the omnic war seeing what it was like on the actual battle field was truly shocking to watch i hope more come
Bastion's model was originally going to be used as police, construction, and so on until they all got hacked and became the backbone of the Omnic invasion. Bastion, as far as I can tell, was ordered to invade the city but malfunctioned. Years later he reactivates and while heading to the objective realizes it is better to build then to destroy. Sadly he still has that programming to invade and kill humans, so he stays in the forest so he would not be forced to hurt anything.
I may be wrong about a few thing though. Been a while since I read up on him.

So great reaction! I've watched this like beyond 20 times! That swinger was not reinhart, but they are "like" him. They were part of a squad during the omnic war called the crusaders thats why u see more guys with hammers on the side of the guy who swung the hammer and shielded, they all wield hammers and had shield but they were wiped out if you saw camera shift to the right they got flanked by the turrets set up on that side. That skin will be available to reinhart in the coming months.
The most touching of all the animated shorts so far yet it has no words.

Yvain Gnabro : Was a 3D Animator , During Summer 2016 he passed away in a freeway crash while riding his motorcycle home from work. Sadly
the crusader in the short is the leader of the crusaders his name was Balderich Von Alder, and probably reinhardts mentor, reinhardt is the last crusader, and probably the newest

i just googled the name and if anyone was wondering Yvain Gnabro worked for blizzard he was an cinematic animator and he died sometime this year in a motorbike accident :( he did really great work rip Yvain Gnabro will be missed
I could have made The Last Bastion short more dramatic. Like before having that bird come down to make Bastion snap out of battle mode, have Bastion run into a couple of civilians first. Like you can have bastion walk closer to the city & then stumbling upon a camp site with a family inside of it. He then scans the camp site & finds that they have guns, traps, & other hunting gear, & then he scans all of the people to find 6 children & 4 adults, & then calculates the campsite to be a threat. One of the children, spots Bastion & then playfully points a toy gun at him. Bastions then immediately goes into sentry mode & is about to lay waste to the entire campsite when the yellow bird finally shows up.
Bastion is the last of that type of Robot that fauggt against humans in the Omnic Crisis, where all machined rised against humans and tried to destroy life. Overwatch was created to end the Crisis.
WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK BASTION IS CUTE HE IS A FRIECKING MURDER ROBOT!
bastion has PTSD, and for those who dont know what PTSD is, it is Post. Tramatic. Stress. Disorder, it is something most soldiers get after coming home from a war or some thing like that

Everytinhg i now about Bastion is that he was one of many Robots that where Re-Programmed in the Omnicwar to fight with the Omnics against Humanity.
Yvain was an animator who worked at blizzard. He passed away in an accident recently.

the one thing i kind of hate about these trailers is how good everything looks like even the dark war stuff look amazing in real life nothing looks that good now i just kind wish i lived in that universe
The sad part i think some people kinda miss out on, i its not jsut making the choice to destroy the city or go fight by himself, its that if he didnt resist his objective, he would be destroyed, whether or not he started to take out citizens or soldiers. Going to the city would mean his death. Not to mention the outcry from terrified people who are jsut waiting for the omnics to try their hand at revolution again, bastion could have sparked some sort of destory all robots and robot sympathizer movement. Its a much more tragic outcome than jsut the aspect that he is a slave to his programming, but that it would mean his desrtuction.

Wrong, partly. The city is Stuttgart, and Bastion's mission back then in the Crisis was to invade and destroy it. Stuttgart is close to Eichenwalde, but it wasn't "built" after Eichenwalde was destroyed.
