Thanks I envy your lifestyle. I m 80 but still ride my Harley and my Kawasaki daily. Lived in Vung Tau 1968,,also Nha Trang and Saigon. If I were not tied down to my sick wife, I would be off to vietnam in a minute. The Vietnamese are such humble people and the country so beautiful and interesting. You can’t beat a Vietnamese sun rise on the ocean! And the food***. Maybe I will look you up someday if we both live a few more years.best regards..thanks

Vung Tau Rider Vung watched your video this is the most beneficial video about Vietnam I’ve seen yet. I’m retired going through a divorce and I’m definitely going to be moving there I love the Culture but mostly the food. I sincerely hope we could become good friends my Dad was there in 67-69 Big Red One ( Armored ) but he hates anything “ Asían “ not me I think it’s absolutely beautiful and it’s my destiny to be there very soon.....🇺🇸❤️

I grew up there. You have one of the best view of VungTau. Housing there is very expressive now. 600$ is reasonable.
I love my view. And my rent is $500 US or 11 million dong.
Great video. Thanks. I recently spent two months in Vietnam and really enjoyed it. My first time there. I like it better than Thailand. Great people and food and less expensive than Thailand, and not as overrun by foreigners as Thailand. I was in Vung Tau one week to escape the crazy traffic in Saigon. I really liked Vung Tau. It's a 'level 1' city, according to the Vietnamese government, and I can see why. Very relaxing place with great weather and not much traffic. It was quite windy when I was there though, and the beaches don't seem that appealing for swimming. But I'd rather look at the sea than swim in it anyway. I wish you happiness and comfort in Vietnam :)
We do have some windy days but most of the time it is a nice ocean breeze in the evening so don't have to use AC. As much as I love Thailand it has become a tourist trap. That's why I ended up living up country in a town with only a handful of westerners. Thanks for the kind words. The best to you also.
Wow a nice apartment ,and yes you are truly correct ,that view is worth every penny,truly stunning,to wake up to that view everyday and sit outside having breakfast would be a dream come true for most people,even sitting watching those storms you speak of from there must be amazing,maybe you should take up photography ,as i am one hundred percent sure,you would catch some stunning photo's,good luck and hope you keep enjoying life.
Yes the view is worth every cent. I have watched some pretty fantastic storms, sunsets, lightning from my balcony. I have taken some pics too.

Sounds like an absolute paradise, ya' snot nosed git. A few years from now, say when you've learned to wipe your own arse, come back and "enlighten us" just a little more on the merits of living in Europe, preferably after you've been weaned from your progenitor's hind teat.
Oh, and you've made abundantly clear by your channel's content, especially so by your subscriptions, that you have a propensity to thoroughly insulate yourself from alternative lifestyles by the adoration shown to members of your own self-congratulating, ahem, tribe. I do recall that that just may have been an impetus for many of the historical troubles which had been visited upon them.

This is my retirement plan, I have a few years to wait , I'll be there in a month for a holiday & a look . I am impressed with what I see . I have been to Vn twice but not to Vung Tao yet
I've lived in Saigon for 15 years now, and I gotta say that Vung Tau may be the most underappreciated place of Vietnam. It's so easy to get away to for a day or two, it's quite lovely and laid back, and there's plenty (enough for me, at least) to see and do there.
It's underappreciated until a holiday weekend and we get slammed with Saigon folks..haha. Vung Tau has a laid back vibe that I find very appealing. After a few days in Saigon I can't wait to get back. Wow. 15 years in Saigon. You have truly made VN your home.
Haha... except I forgot to mention that we're moving back to the States in 30 days! That said, I do hope to make it back here for retirement... and definitely someplace nicer than Saigon. Vung Tau is a definite possibility, though right now I think we're leaning towards Da Nang.
The beauty of Vung Tau has stuck in my mind since the middle 60’s, I’d love to see it again.

First of all, thank you for your service! Secondly, (me too) I envy your lifestyle. Lastly, thank you for the inspiration and guiding light. I have been thinking a lot lately about retiring in Vietnam. I left (pronounced escaped) Vietnam in 1979 when I was 9yrs old. I am 50 now and hopefully can retired in at 65yrs, in 15yrs. I don't live too far from your hometown in Sacramento. I lived in Oroville, CA. I plan on visiting Vietnam regularly before I retired to scope out a place to retired. I was there for a month in October of 2018. Next time I am in Vietnam I will look you up, buy you a coffee and seek advice on retiring in Vietnam! Joel.

Yes it is nice. It was between Da Nang, Nha Trang and Vung Tau as to where I was going to live. Vung Tau was cheaper so here I am.

I visited HCMC in late Feb after viewing your video. I wanted to see Vung Tau, but my tour guide took ill. I loved HCM and the people. I will visit Hanoi next. Hi, I am a fellow expat. Been here in Nha Trang for four years now. I started out in Saigon but got out as soon as my 6 month lease was up. My costs are relatively similar to yours except for rent. I live in a new three bedroom, three bathroom unattached house right on the Cai river in the center of Nha Trang. It came fully furnished with garden areas and a patio that goes out into the river. There is a second kitchen in the garden area. I pay $390 USD a month plus utilities. It helps that I am married to a Vietnamese woman who pushes me aside and haggles over the price of everything. I am Canadian but lived in Mexico for 14 years prior to coming here so I am very used to the expat life style and will never return to Canada.
Thanks for sharing. Do you think it would be impossible for an incoming expat to land a similar deal that you found, if they aren't married to a local or have a local relative? BTW, I live in the US and am just now starting to research retirement locations outside the US. Thanks!
@@TheHubisOfMan If it is important to you to live in Saigon or Hanoi there is not much chance. If you are willing to live in one of the smaller towns like Nha Trang my wife just said she would find you something similar to what we have. She has already done that for one Belgian we met. I've watched this video many times. My plans are to retire 10/18 and fly to Phuket, Thailand on November 22nd...I'll spend about a month there, then fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia...After Cambodia I'll visit Vietnam for the first time.. From your video and an article in International Living magazine I think I'll visit Vung Tao. You did a great job explaining everything and who woldn't want to watch the sun rise from that patio.....thanks for the video....
stitchergary lucky for you ...before you fly out ask one the Vietnamese travel agent get for you Vietnam Visa for 5 years for $100 that saves you a lot money , instead you paid $50 every 3 month like Mr rider said
I worked in VN for 3+ years in Da Nang and Hanoi and it was by far the best country I have ever been to in my working life. I loved every part of being there and it's the only country that I still keep in touch with people I met there even after 10+ years of not working in VN. Many of the friends I met still ask me "Why you don't come and live VN". It's a great place, I have even met a few Vn vets that have returned to finally try and find peace in their lives. Just got get out and meet some vocals their really nice.

Very nice view lookin out of the apartment, the apartment is nice has every just like it here in the U. S . I would love to retire there too, Vung Tau is where I born and most of my relative still livin there. I came to the U.S since I was 10 , but now I living in Louisiana . Da Nang is a nice place to live too. I think you make the right choice, the price is not too bad, you get to see beautiful view everyday and you can go to the beach for a little swim, not to mention the foods is so good,. Hi Barry, I enjoyed your videos on Vung Tau. I was there from Sep 1964 to Jan 1966 when I wasn't TDY all over the country. I was from Rach Gia in the south to Danang in the north. Of all of the places I visited I liked VT better than the rest including Saigon. I went back to VN 2 years ago last Nov. to look at some of the places that I went to. I couldn't believe that Front Beach had a barrier there and there was no beach. There was a lot of fishing boats (Sampans). We used to go there and have a unit party every now and then. I rented a motorcycle for a day and rode around VT and I went to Back Beach (Bia Sau) and all that was there was high rises and private beach clubs. We used to get a Bigggg lobster or a fried crab that was about 12 inches wide with Potatoes that tasted like they had been cook in motor oil for $1, yes $1. I never got sick on that and that was the first time that I ever ate either one. I went to Nha Trang on my last visit and they wanted $40-$50 for a lobster. I only saw small crabs (about 6 inches across) and I asked the sea food shop owners "What happened to the big crabs?" They all told me "All Gone". I guess that they were over fished or trapped and ate. I stayed in VT for a week and only met 2 Americans there . Their are a lot of Aussies there (that is a different story). The only place I recognized in VT was the Grand Hotel. All of the US military places were closed to outsiders, including the airfield at VT. I had in my mind that there would be a lot of military and police everywhere in the country, but I probably only saw about 30 and never went through a checkpoint. To me traveling in VN (I rode buses, which are very nice with Wifi everywhere. I felt a LOTTTT safer there than I do here in Arkansas. I stayed a month and had no problems getting around. The people couldn't understand what few word I new in Vietnamese with a southern twang. I've rambled enough here but the country is cheap (except for the seafood) and the people a re a lot more friendlier than they were over 50 years ago. I'm trying to talk my wife into going there with me again for about 2 months and run around the country. Good Luck Barry and live life to the fullest.
Thanks Carlos. I never made it to VT back in the day. I went to Hong Kong on my R&R and never did an in-country R&R. The vets who come back to VN do so for a lot of reasons. Some, like you, want to visit the places they were stationed or fought in. As for myself I really have no desire to re-visit the war so I have not been to any war memorials or places that I was in. Each man deals with his war memories in different ways. Being a tech in the Air Force my war was pretty easy compared to so many. If I had gone through what they did I would probably feel different about going back to those places. Good luck to you also.

I have insurance in the states. Hopefully i can get home if something serious comes up. Otherwise it's pay as you go for me. I am lucky I haven't had any problems since I've been here. Expat insurance is available but it was too expensive for me.
You know you have gone native when you have your own baby chairs as furniture :) I used to live in Saigon and have visited Vung Tau many times. My wife is Vn so I am able to get 5 year visas. We moved to the states and while I love the states I kick myself in the rear daily wishing we never did. I always tell her that if we move back it will be Vung Tau or Dalat. Probably Vung Tau since it is just so easy to get to Saigon if need be.
That's funny about the chairs. Where would the street food vendors be without baby chairs...haha. I'm curious. Does your wife want to live in the US or come back to VN?
Sorry for the late response. Honestly we are very mixed. She is very happy living in the states now but we miss living in Vn. We go back at least once to twice a year still. We talk about hopefully moving back when we retire one day.

I lived And worked in Vietnam From 2005 to 2011 in HCMC. Got married and Now living in the U. S. With my Vietnamese wife. So Barry, You didn't mention anything about girlfriend?? I hope to retire their soon, looking at Phu Quoc, I prefer the island life, so much more peaceful and quieter than mainland VN. In your video, I could hear the bus and truck horns. And by the way Mosquitoes Can only fly so high Because of the wind.

Very nice digs sir. Thanks for taking the time to show us first hand what the dollar will do in that part of Vietnam. You have obviously gotten around the language barrier which is good to see. I have only been to the Philippines and Thailand and especially in the PI there was no real language barrier so that increases the comfort zone for me. I think after I get my retirement set in place in about 6 months I am going to spend a couple months in Vietnam as a tourist and see if it makes sense for me to call the area home for maybe 6 months of the year. Again....thanks!
Sounds like a good plan. I've never done PI except for brief stops heading elsewhere. You know not speaking the language doesn't really bother me except once or twice a month when I get in a situation with someone who doesn't speak any English. But no big deal. I have a translator app.

Vung Tau Rider wow it takes a lot of guts to make a move like that , I would like to do the same thing. But I have a home in Florida, full of furniture. I’m 54 and have an income of around $6800,00 a month. I guess to be honest scared to make that move because of the unknown. Lol. If you could give me some wise advise on the matter would be very helpful. I would like to talk more personal if possible would be great if possible. Just trying to do my homework. Ready to leave this crazy United States. Would appreciate it!

Thanks a lot for getting back to me so quickly. I appreciate it. You're absolutely right about the fires. It's terrible. I think that they are finally getting a handle on the Carr fire. Yesterday they said it was 65% contained, or 35% wild, lol. The smoke is still terrible here, but I count myself fortunate. I did have to vacate my house for a couple of days, but no damage. So I'm grateful for that. Some of those mountains look like they were hit with Napalm. It's ugly.
Yes, the way that I get my money there is a concern. I don't think I would be inclined to open an account there. Like you I have direct deposits and have had them for years going to my credit union in Pasadena. I haven't had any problems with that and I don't think I would change. I wondered about ATM's there. I suppose you can't use them though because of the exchange rate is always changing and then there would probably be a pretty substantial fee to.
I also watched your other video where you were out riding on your bike and running errands. When you said you were going to the bank I thought this must be telepathy. That was the question I had posted moments earlier. But of course, you had to cut off the film after you greeted the girls. Riding around town there seemed like it was almost like some small town here in California. But you did say that the weekends the traffic is considerably busier.
For me, I would likely just go there for a short visit like you might have done the first time. Then I could check it out and see what I think. I'm not one to just jump right in. In any case, it would be an interesting trip. Oh, how are they with credit cards? Do most places accept American Express, Visa, Mastercard? I know a small shop probably wouldn't accept them. I doubt places such as your motorbike mechanic is set up to take credit cards.
This might seem crazy to ask, but what about the Internet. Obviously you use it. But the language. Can you select a Home Page like MSN.com or FOX.com and have it appear in English? I know you know about the Carr fire so you must have seen that on the Internet.

I prefer to answer questions on here so that if other people have the same question I can answer for all. Actually I had never been here before when I first came and stayed. Of course I had lived in Thailand for years so I am used to an expat lifestyle in Asia. I did all my research online and then chose Vung Tau for the reasons I gave in my videos. But if you haven't lived overseas I would come on a 60 day visa and stay one or two months. By then you will know if you like it or not before committing long term. I am about to sign my 4th 6 month lease tomorrow. it's no problem using ATMs here and most places accept credit cards. With the exception of the small local shops such as my mechanic. No big deal. When I wire my money I always get enough for living expenses and fun money in local currency. My internet here is faster than what I had at home. Everything is the same on my Yahoo home page with the exception of having a few ads in Vietnamese pop up. No big deal. You can select your language for your home page.

Prior to coming here I was living in Maha Sarakham Thailand. I have to admit I was a little bored living there. No night life to speak of. Not like Chiang Mai. I miss many things about Thailand but I won't go back to live.

It took a long time to get back. I was here in 68/69. It's a great place to retire. DaNang is very pretty and developed but it is more expensive than Vung Tau.

Vung Tau Rider ~ Vung Tau looks to be the main seaside destination for HCMC, much in the same way that Santa Monica beach is the main seaside destination for Los Angeles city. Does it feel overly crowded during the high season and on weekends?
I've decided I'll probably start my return with 2 to 4 week stays in inexpensive Vietnamese hotels, going from one seaside area to another (4 or 5 in all) until I know what's the best fit for me. Two places I want to check out for sure are Hoi An and Nha Trang. Any thoughts on them? Thanks! (I've joined ExpatDOTcom...you? Some interesting expat chatter there)

Damn fine place for roughly $600.00 all in. Cannot beat that, especially with the fantastic views you have. We younger folks can learn a lot from you guys!!! That is why I am always chatting with older guys when I travel as they most likely have been there......did that.

I love Vung Tau. I go there twice a year, from California. The beach is nice, the water is around 82 degrees, but if you like to surf, like I do, there's never any good surf here. The people here are very nice and the girls are beautiful. Great value for the money here.
You're right about no surf. Unless we have a cyclone coming... haha.

Good day again Vung Tau rider, Ive been there in Vung Tau City working in PTSC MC site for fabrication of TSJOC well head platform (Trung Son- PetroVietnam Talisman Petronas joint operation) in on shore/ off shore projects. The other job was in Ba-ria Vung Tau in Power plants as Mechanical Engineer. My activities there in that City were to find restaurant for my meals, sometimes bathing in sea, most was going jogging walking hiking going to Christo Ray/ Christ the King monument and im contented to see my Lord Jesus, that was year 2011-2014, im here now in Davao City, Philippines where I lived and ive got some few photos of Christ the King in our Altar and His figurine..what an experiences ive got there in Vietnam, it will always be remembered thru out my life until the day my life disappear, thnx......God bless.

I spent several weeks TDY in Vung Tau in 1971 at the airfield. Even during the war it was a very nice place and I have always wanted to visit it again.
Not a bad place to do a TDY
I was stationed in Can Tho and when my unit stood down I went to Vung Tau to prepare our aircraft for shipment back to the states. We would get one aircraft every other day and it only took about six hours to do the prep so we had a lot of time to see the area. Can Tho wasn't a bad assignment in 1971 either.

For a similar apartment like that in Canada, it would cost you $2700/month not furnished. Fyi, you should use "google translator". Just type what you want to say and translate that to Vietnamese and hit play and the computer would read out loud for ya. Very handy.
I use google translator on my phone. But sometimes it comes up with crap.
Vung Tau is nice but Con Dao is absolutelyy amazing !!! Make a trip there and you will fall in love with the island !

Thanks. If the slider is open you can hear a lot of things..haha. From the construction next door or the occasional high performance bike with hot exhausts to the guy who rides his cycle around with a PA blaring something everyday. Typical sounds you hear in Asia. But with the slider closed it's pretty quiet. Especially when the AC is on. There used to be a big open air night club across the street on the waterfront that blared pop music til 2 am. But they closed down.

Good video....I was there in 69 with the 1st Air Cav...Vung Tau was a in country R&R center...I didn't take my R&R there I went to Bangkok...;D...We did fly over the area in are Huey and I must say they had the nicest bunkers I have ever seen....It looked very secure...I'm retired now for 5 years and make several trips a year to the Philippines and Thailand....I'm planning my first trip back there later this year...You have a great apartment.....

Sweet, I am comming up to that age and see no future in the UK and have been looking at India but Vietnam looks so much better, less chaos and more scenic. Thanks for the info will watch more of your casts.

@@vungtaurider2864 how do you it...? vietnam is definitely beautiful,cheap and has good food, but the lack of common sense + the greed here is quite unbearable... i'm here almost 6 months and thank god i will leave in 2 weeks...this country brings out the worst in me....very important be patient here.....i lived almost 10 years in thailand, but the stress i've experienced here in these 6 months is way worse than i ever had compared to the 10 years in thailand....all that unnecessary honking of cars and motorbikes ...anyways everyone is different i hope you at least enjoy it out here....
Hi Kevin. Thailand will always be special to me but circumstances don't allow me to live there anymore. That being said I find Vietnam to have it's own charms. I think greed is endemic to all of Asia or for that matter most of the world. Since I don't have a lot of money I am not a targeted ATM so I don't really run into that much with the exception of a few bar girls. And I expect it with them. I don't see much difference in the traffic in Saigon over Bangkok. It's all madhouse and noise. Vung Tau is pretty quiet overall. Much like where I lived upcountry in Thailand.

Rider, I to was there during the war, I was there in 1970-71. I found the people very nice and the country was beautiful. I was in Da Nang, so I am partial to there. I wish I could go back to see my kids there. I have about 240 kids there now.

it's actually pretty expensive, I pay 600 € in total for a 2 bedroom apartment (60 m²) right in the center of a 500,000 people town in Germany. Are normal VN people able to pay that much?
Nicely done.....and a good place to call home.....I lived in Manila, but will look to Vietnam or Laos to retire. I am a scuba diver. Probably not much clear water in Vietnam... still I ageee nice people and look forward to seeing Da Lat again.

I don't think there is much clear water near Vung Tau. As far as the rest of the coastline... well they have a long one so maybe there's some good areas.

Thanks for the overview. You've got a nice place there and that's a heck of a price. If things go as planned I should be able to retire (13 years early) and live well in that area of the world for the rest of my life. I can't wait to wave goodbye to the rat race.
I've been living in Asia quite a few years now and I've never regretted leaving the US. Sure I miss family and a good ribeye but everything is a tradeoff. I feel younger in Asia. Go figure...haha.
I am from San Francisco, California. I lived in Ben Tre, Vietnam a little over 2 years. I paid $0 on rent, $1 electricity and a 2,500 square meters pond to swim with free fish for dinner.

Yes. Very easy to meet other foreigners. If you have money, the bar ladies will love you. :-)

You'll be driving near the Carr fire when you go past Redding and then you'll see the smoke from the Mendocino fire when you get near Williams on Interstate 5, My kids and their families had to evacuate for the Mendocino fire but they were lucky and the fire missed them by a couple of miles.

I spend from $1300-$1500 per month for everything, which rent and utilities taking the most part. I save a little each month, and can live anywhere in the world. Singapore would be my choice for the safety and cleanliness.
I have a 2 bedroom apartment, with pool, man made lake, exercise room, and tennis court. The landscaping looks like Acapulco, but the apartment is drafty in the winter, which means duct tape and blankets up to windows and the doors. I am 75, great health and a widow. I travelled and worked from ages 7-70. Enjoy your life, for we take nothing with us. I have made arrangements for my cremation, and even filled out my death certificate. I do enjoy my apartment with all my books, tapes, writings etc. I thank God for 6 years of safe retirement, although I keep my windows and doors blocked, but a big fat pink guy had the keys to the apartments and tried to come in about 5 times at all hours, and he knew I would have given him a dirt nap.
I would think after the first or second time, you would change the locks.
